Ah, Gentle Readers, you’ve been quite busy, haven’t you? My little birdies were just full to bursting with things to report. And, this author only feels it is her duty to report what they have shared.
Lord Hurst’s ball was a huge success, with many in attendance that night. Despite the fight that took place in the middle of it all, it was a nice affair. This author doubts that the two involved in the fight would feel the same way, especially since one of them actually landed a blow! How dreadful!
Speaking of the host, Lord Hurst has great reason to celebrate! He is the proud papa of a bouncing baby boy! Lady Hurst, however, is not the little boy’s mother. This author was not sure whether or not Lady Hurst knew of the lad, but could not miss the opportunity to offer her congratulations to Lord Hurst.
The hosts young daughter, a simpering young miss by the name of Patience, was quite a hit with the gentlemen in attendance! She was seen dancing with four different young men! How tragic for the Frenchman who swooped in to save her from the purse thief she encountered a few weeks back. This author wonders if her popularity with the patrons had any affect on their illicit affair!
Moving on, Mr. Harry Fisher, a new arrival to our circles, was quite the popular gentleman at the ball. He was seen having a rather secret and lengthy discussion with Miss Constance Mosley. He also seemed to be quite chummy with Lady Gwendolyn Linley as well! But the true darling of the evening, for Mr. Fisher anyways, was his young ward, a Miss Nell Abbott. And while we’re speaking of Mr. Fisher, this author has noticed an upper class rent boy that has affiliations with Mr. Fisher has been seen servicing women on the side! It seems it is not only husbands that find themselves unsatisfied lately.
Lord Thaddeus Chadwick, our illustrious mayor, made his first appearance at a public gathering since his wife left him. He put on quite a brave face, and he was even seen dancing with a young woman whose political loyalty lies with the opposing party!
Quite a party Lord Hurst hosted in this authors humble opinion.
Outside of the ballroom walls, there was much to be learned. It appears a Mr. Irving Driscoll Slater, known to most as just Slater, has gone missing. This author has to wonder about Mr. Fisher’s feelings on this matter.
It also seems that our roads continue to be unsafe for us to travel! There was another robbery on the London to Bath road. Mrs. May Clarkson had a number of precious items stolen by the masked assailant and the local constables seem to have little hope of returning them. This author wonders if this menace will ever be captured and brought to justice!
While we’re on the topic of evading capture, it seems that a reclusive French aristo is rumored to have escaped the revolution and taken lodgings in London. However, this is only rumored, and this author cannot verify this as fact. The man has not been seen, but there are whispers. This author is confident that her little birds will eventually get to the bottom of this! This author feels it is her duty to do so!
It also appears that a new arrival to our social circle, Lord Merek Aubert, has a young woman residing with him. As this author has had confirmed, Lord Aubert is quite unattached, so this author has to wonder about the identity of this young woman.
While her identity remains a mystery for now, there is a bigger mystery brewing within our streets. It appears that the missing Laurent brother is no longer missing! He has been reportedly been seen numerous times, and this author can’t help but wonder if he has made a miraculous return, and if he has, why is the family being so quiet about it? This author waits with baited breath to find out if it truly is him, and will share it with you, Gentle Reader, as soon as she knows!
To end the column this week, this author will share two tidbits she has been given on the illustrious Blake family. It appears Mr. Demetri Blake has been seen skulking around the Bridge Theater lately. This author is curious as to what sort of business Mr. Blake has in that area of the city.
The elder brother, Mr. Christopher Blake seems to have found love. This author has been informed he is quite taken with a French dowager duchess; an illegal French dowager duchess at that. Quite a daring choice if one asks this humble author.
Until next time, Gentle Reader,
xx Lady Littlebird
