"You do them much credit, citoyenne," Jacques said, in what he thought was a very nice piece of gallantry. He thought for a moment and came up with something that was, to his mind, one of the highest compliments he could pay. "You would not be out of place in Paris. Have you ever been there?"
There was a trace of wistfulness. Jacques loved his country deeply and Paris best of all. One of his chief sorrows was being away from Paris, particularly when it was changing so quickly and so wonderfully.
