Slater was widely known as dangerous, though few either failed or declined to recognise it. Those who failed to recognise it soon learnt their mistake, as did those who declined but in very different ways. Mary was an exception to those rules; she knew he was dangerous, but she just didn't care, and that was what made her so special. Keeping her close and almost flush to his body, Slater strolled along like he owned half of London - which he may as well have done.
"A handmaiden? Well it's a good a start as any," he agreed, head held high as he gave a few lurking men the evil eye. "I'd be glad to come and cheer you on on opening night - but I can't agree you'll wrangle everything out of me!"
