Charles happily exchanged with her and watched eagerly as she opened her gift. Her response made the entire evening even better! His mother had suggested earrings in amethyst and his sister had suggested the girandole style, which he knew next to nothing about. Luckily the jeweler had been familiar with the style.
"I'm so glad! I think they'll look lovely on you," he said. Then he placed one of his gifts on the writing desk and opened the other. He was careful not to rip the paper in too many places, and so took his time discovering the pocket watch within. He held it up and admired it. It was a very fine piece! "Abigail, you have perfect taste."
Not forgetting the second gift, which was shaped suspiciously like a book, Charles pocketed his first gift and unwrapped the second. His fingers ran over the cover of the leather-bound edition of Shakespeare.
"Perfect taste," he repeated and smiled contentedly at her. "Thank you, Abby."
