Katherine remained silent as Eward stepped across the threshold and into the foyer of the house. She was, too, quiet as she shut the door behind him, bolting the lock once more, remaining with her hands pressed against the heavy wood for just a moment longer, collecting herself. When he spoke to her, she at last turned into the house to face him.
Swallowing, Katherine responded evenly, "You have disturbed nothing, you need not apologize." It felt forced, strained, as if all they could do without feeling odd was to discuss necessities, argue, or make love, and Katherine was keen on none of them at the moment.
