Robert had a high alcohol tolerance, but nearly two full bottles of port down the hatch and he was dancing on the tables trying to sing 'Yankee Doodle'. Of course, this was not the best thing to do in White's, which was a decidedly Tory club where all the members considered the American Revolution to be a Conversational Topic That Led to Certain Death to those who spoke of it.
"Yankee Doodle keep it up, Yankee Doodle daaaaaaaaaandy! Miiiiiiind the music and the step and with the girls be haaaaaaaaaaan- ah!" Robert, who had been improving a little jig on the top of the card table, found that he was not steady enough on his feet to withstand a pack of cards flung at his head.
He tumbled backwards, hitting his head against a chair.
"Oops," said the card-thrower.
A quarter of an hour later, several gamblers deposited Robert, awake, hiccuping, and swearing at them all because now he had no idea what the hell Yankee Doodle ought to be doing now, on Daniel's doorstep.
