Katherine watched solemnly but vigilantly as Eward stalked off, having broken the spell that had kept them from their normal, snide selves. But it did not feel as good as it ought to. She usually felt satisfaction at insulting Eward, pride in being able to stand up to him in an argument and even win it. All of that was not there any more, and what replaced it was genuine regret. What right had she to be cruel to him? Was it not just as selfish of her to have tried in self-preservation to insult him, lest Daphne see what may or may not have been there between them?
Turning to Daphne, breaking from her solemn reverie, Katherine responded rather shortly, "What do you mean, what was all of that about? You aren't really asking me why I am horrible to Eward, are you? We've been that way since we were children." But that, Katherine knew, would not excuse it.
