Katherine smiled, a bit forcedly, at Daniel, but found that the tangible attraction between the two people before her was indeed a suitable distraction. She felt a bit calm for the moment, focusing on her friends' good fortune rather than her own seemingly imminent misfortune lest Eward notice her presence when she had nowhere to hide. Quickly, Katherine responded, "Well, now you've ample opportunity to know her, Daniel," but the words came out rapidly and rather briskly.
She noticed Daniel's sudden change in emotion, but it was only as he hurried off that Katherine realized what had caused it. Turning, she saw Eward approaching them, unable to see his exact features from a distance but knowing that it was him and that he was headed towards herself and Daphne. "Perhaps we might join Daniel?" Katherine began to suggest to her friend, but it was whispered, hurried, and too late, for even if Daphne had responded, Eward would have been upon them to realize that they were fleeing. Katherine steeled herself against the onslaught of emotions, hoping the encounter would be brief.
