"I am quite sure he did, but his ego must have gotten the best of him there. He's no better than he was years ago," Katherine mused, but her heart was not in it. She and Daphne had mercilessly teased Eward, if only to themselves, when they were younger, and had continued as of late. But now...it felt strange, knowing that the entire balance of her relationship with him had changed, if in ways she could not quite pinpoint. And it was more awkward still to force a laugh at Daphne's innuendoes.
Katherine touched Daphne's hand, sighing and saying, "I know, Daphne, I just...I've not been myself lately." She cast a long glance towards the men still out shooting and saw Eward's distinguishable and large figure. How could she have missed him upon arriving? She bit her lip before adding, "I don't fear him, and I never have." Katherine neglected to add that she feared how she felt around him, if not Eward himself, as she stole another look in the men's direction.
