Madelene was stubborn, but she knew better than to argue. "Yes, sir," she said softly as she put the money back into the small bag, along with her marble. Of course, she wasn't going to give up that easily; she intended to try again later.
"I deserved it," she said as she watched him light the lamp, before she looked down. "I always deserve what they do."
