Nell stirred, taking a few moments to remember were he was and why he felt as if he’d been knocked for six. He sat up, the bedcovers falling away and looked around the bedroom, everything from yesterday rushing back to him.
Harry’s house. He was at Harry’s house and he was there because yesterday he’d taken a beating from a client. Nell swore under his breath, swinging his legs over the edge of the bed and tottering over the floor to look at himself in the mirror laid up against the wall. It wasn’t quite as bad as he’d been expecting but it was still nasty – a split lip and a few darkening bruises around the corner of his mouth and jaw. It also looked like he’d have a black eye.
Harry was probably right about taking a while off. The bruises would have started to fade by the end of the week and then he could cover them with some of his stage make-up. Looking around the room Nell tried to find his clothes from yesterday, but they were no where to be seen. Then he remembered what Harry said about throwing the tattered old dress away. So that left Nell with nothing to wear then.
He threw open the doors to Harry’s wardrobe, searching through it for something he could wear before he came upon the red quilted dressing gown. It was soft against his fingers and beautiful, made of velvet and he drew it from the wardrobe, burring his face in it and breathing in Harry’s scent. Pulling on the dressing gown he tied the belt around his middle, the long fine gown pooling around the floor at his feet.
He went downstairs, following the smell of freshly cooked breakfast; hoping both to find something to eat and to find Harry.
