Nell certainly didn't envy the girl. He was waiting to be picked up as well, but not by just anybody, there was a trip to the theatre lined up, a much posher one than what Nell was used to, but the client was running late and Nell couldn't help watching her. She looked so small.
Nell hadn't ever felt particularly paternal to anyone. He'd always been the youngest of Harry's lot and girls, even his older half-sister, were a bit of a mystery to him but it wasn't half a cold night and she didn't even have anything to cover herself with.
His client could see him from across the street Nell decided. The least he could do was offer some sort of company to her, not that he'd be much help if there was any trouble but at least she might be slightly safer.
He crossed the road and smiled at her. "Bloody cold night to be out, isn't it?"
