Katherine hurried up the the Mountford-Miles residence, her heavy cloak hanging like a dead weight on her shoulders and over her head. It had been right hard work getting out of the house without her mother or Miles noticing; the former would have had her hanged, while the latter needn't know what was going on. She had not told him about what Eward now knew of their secret, for he had no reason to be worried if she could resolve it on her own as she intended on doing tonight.
She reached the garden and was passed by what appeared to be a young woman, her clothes off-kilter and her expression sad, even in the darkness. Katherine looked up to the windows of the second landing and saw dim lights, but no figures. Swallowing, she strengthened her resolve and went up to the front door, heart racing. It had not been her intention to voluntarily see Eward for some time after what had happened at dinner, but she had to set things right for herself and for Miles. Whatever that took.
Knocking carefully on the door, Katherine found it immediately answered by one of the servants of the house. He did not seem surprised at her presence, but, in fact, rather disgusted. Not lifting her hood, Katherine said evenly, "Is his lordship available?" The servant nodded, leading her into the grand house and showing her up the stairs.
"Second room to your left, miss," he said, before leaving Katherine to herself. He must think me one of Eward's whores, she found herself thinking, but still proceeded to her destination, knocking lightly on the wooden doorframe.
