Rey & Luke

Luke had not been particularly social since he joined the ship, and after so much self-inflicted exile, it was much easier to stay in his quarters and not subject himself to idle chatter. But he needed to let it go. He had to get out, but forcing himself to do so was no small feat.

As he approached the Deck 5 lounge, he was felt a strong presence in the Force, something he wasn't used to since he really only felt people from his galaxy. As he turned the corner and walked in, he saw Leia, which helped explain much of a what he felt, but not all of it. And then he saw her, seated with a view of the stars. Rey. She had to be.

He gave Leia a passing glance, but remembered their conversation. He'd promised to learn Rey's identity and he wasn't going to back down from that promise. He ordered his own drink—a blend more fruit than alcohol—and took the seat next to her. "I take it you're Rey?"

Rey looked at the older man who took the seat next to her. If he knew her name, that most likely meant..."Luke Skywalker?" She couldn't fight the grin that spread across her face. "General Organa told me you were here."

She was in the presence of a legend. A legend who could possibly help her gain greater understanding of the Force and why she happened to be connected to it. "I have your lighstaber--your first one."

Luke smiled at her and took a sip of his drink. "The General has been too much of a go-between for the both of us. She's the one that told me about you, and that you apparently intended to come find me. And you had my lightsaber. I'd love to hear how you came by it. I assumed it was long gone, lost in space."

"Maz Kanata had it. On Takodana. Han brought us--my friend Finn, BB-8, and me--to get help in getting BB-8 back to the resistance with the piece of the map to you BB-8 had." Rey paused and took a swig of her beer before continuing.

"I don't know how Maz came to have it. It was in an old chest with a few other things that I...didn't really notice very much." She was quiet for a moment. "It called to me. And when I touched it, I saw things--visions. Mostly of the past, but one was of the future, which did end up happening. It was really very confusing, because nothing like that had happened before."

Luke listened to her, hanging on her every word. He knew of Maz, and her Force sensitivity, but the two had never met; she ran more with Han's crowd than his, and he'd been so busy trying to rebuilt the Order to seek out all of the untrained Force-wielders. But, he found himself immediately feeling great appreciation for the woman.

As Rey continued, he leaned forward farther, probing a bit with the Force, looking for the emotions behind her words. "Talk to me more about these visions. Are there specific moments you remember? Usually a vivid image or impression is important."

Rey took a deep breath. "I started in a corridor...it was dark but the lights started coming on, and I could hear a fight--a lightsaber fight. I know how that sounds, now. Then I fell, and I was...in the dust, somewhere, and something was burning. I saw a cloaked man, with a droid right hand, and an R2 unit." Her confusion at these parts was clear, and as she continued, an edge of fear crept in.

"Then I was somewhere else, I think, and it was raining. I looked over my shoulder to see...some kind of warrior about to attack me--or maybe someone else in whatever the vision was of--but then a red lightsaber came through his chest from his back and he fell. There were..." She shuddered slightly at the memory. "...there were bodies all over the ground, and the red lightsaber was in Kylo Ren's hand. Then he turned and looked and I swear it was like he was actually seeing me."

Rey glanced down at her beer. "I turned to run and found myself back on Jakku, watching myself get left behind on the planet. I was...so small...and I was screaming for whoever had left me there to come back, not to leave me there." The pain of that section of the vision was clear, as well as the leftovers of a child's sense of being betrayed, of being afraid to be alone in such a desolate place, and being confused as to why it was all happening. Rey swallowed hard. "I saw the ship that left me flying away."

Clearing her throat, she continued. "Then the sky went dark, and there was an odd red light. I turned around and I was in a forest with snow all around. I turned to run, but Kylo Ren and his lightsaber blocked my path.. And then it was over." She took a long swig of beer followed by a deep breath. "I fought him in that forest, after he killed Han and hurt Finn." She glanced at Luke, knowing Ren was his nephew, and knowing he might have mixed feeling despite Ren's destruction of his fellow apprentices, but nevertheless feeling accomplished. "I beat him. It was hard, until he accidentally reminded me about the Force and that I could use it." Ren, she thought, was not as bright as he seemed to like to think he was, which gave her a good deal of pleasure.

Luke listened intently, fascinated by such a vivid vision without any training at all. Rey was special, he could see that, sense that, in just the few minutes they had been talking.

He fought down the desire to glance at Leia. There were still secrets that needed to be shared, but he wasn't prepared to do that, especially when they weren't his to tell.

As Rey finished, he smiled. "I'm afraid Ren accidentally does many things. More impulsive than his father and grandfather combined." He shook his head and met her gaze again. "That is a long, intense vision, especially to have it with no training in the Force. I can maybe explain some things," he held up his mechanical hand and wiggled his fingers as demonstration, "but not all. I do think it's clear that we cannot call that my lightsaber anymore. If you can wield it against Ren's skills that quickly, and it's bestowing you with those kinds of visions, the blade would no more answer to me than it would its original owner, Anakin Skywalker."

Rey's eyes widened slightly when Luke held up his mechanical hand. That did make sense. Rey found herself smiling slightly, as he told her the lightsaber was hers now. "I did manage to call it to me, in the forest. Ren tried it, too, but it went whizzing past him to me." She paused. "I almost wish it had managed to hit him in the face on the way." He'd have deserved that.

"I'm still getting used to knowing the Force is there," she admitted. "I can pick things up fairly quickly, when I try them, but it's still so new."

Luke laughed, and then laughed harder because he thought about his nephew, and how ridiculous of a reaction he would have had knowing someone had laughed at him. He shook his head bat the thoughts away. "I assume he did not take it well when the lightsaber didn't come to him?"

He paused for a moment, considering what she said. It sounded much like his early days with the Force. He could almost hear Obi-Wan's descriptions and teachings. "I had a similar experience when I first discovered the Force. Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi gave me the lightsaber, told me it was my father's, and left out the details of how he came to possess it. That was the first time I'd ever heard of the Force. I learned quickly to fight with the lightsaber against remotes, and days later used the Force to destroy the first Death Star. But after that, I struggled. I doubted. It won't stay that easy."

Rey grinned. It was good to hear Luke laugh; she had the feeling he hadn't done enough of it for a long time. "He seemed very shocked. Then I attacked, and he had me on the run until he had the audacity to offer to teach me the ways of the Force. Which I suppose he did, a little, without meaning to."

She nodded. "I would like to learn more, and not always just by trial and error." Which was about half of her experience using the Force so far, to her knowledge. She thought for a moment. "Do you think there might be a way that the Force could help me know more about who I am? I can't really remember my family..."

Luke smiled a bit. He enjoyed Rey's attitude, and it reminded him, well, Leia. He fought down the urge to look at her again.

"The Dark Side is always very needy for converts. They love to entice you in the worst moments. Vader did the same to me."

His back straightened a bit at her next comment. Of course that's what she wanted. He could relate, though at least he'd been left with step-family. "I think the Force has a way of bringing the truth out, even when you least expect it."

Sighing, Rey leaned back in her seat. "It certainly does other things when least expected." She supposed that made sense, even if she didn't understand it. The Force was...well, a force, and like other forces, it had a way--or ways--it works. And she was still figuring that out, and expected she would be for a long while.

She glanced at Luke and smiled. "I am glad you're here. And that General Organa is here. It's nice not to be the only one from...where we're from."

Her smile was infectious. He could see what Leia was talking about, and he probed a little bit more in the Force.

Leia wanted to know if this young woman was Breha. With her forgotten memories, it was hard to tell for sure, not without probing far deeper than Luke thought appropriate. But her strong Force vision, her friction with Ben, the longing and confusion he felt flowing from her—he was quite certain she was. And he really needed to stop probing at her mind. She would probably notice.

"I'm glad I'm here, too. And I'm glad to meet you. I've been in exile long enough that being in a new place and meeting new people is genuinely refreshing." He held up his drink to signal to her and took another sip. "Do you have the lightsaber with you?"

Rey had noticed a sort of...tickle at the edge of her mind, not invasive, but still odd-feeling. But almost as soon as she'd noticed it, it was gone. Strange, but she wasn't terribly bothered by it. She smiled at his take on ending up in this strange new world.

"I do, yes. The people here are very good about giving you your things back once they've had a look at them." She reached into the satchel slung around her shoulders and drew out the lightsaber--hers now, Luke's before, and his father's before him. She held it out to him.

Luke took the hilt with a smile and turned it over in his hands. When he'd lost it, he was devastated, partially because he had no idea how to build another, and wasn't sure he'd ever be able to wield one properly minus a hand. But, he overcame the hand, and eventually learned how to construct a new one, a weapon that had been his far longer than this one was.

Anakin's blade had a pretty finish, in that sleek style they had lost with the Old Republic. It was beautiful.

But the blade had seen its share of good and bad. It had slain so, so many innocent lives, far too many children, Luke now knew. It could have brought Obi-Wan's death, had he not been quicker.

This same blade had helped lead Luke on the path than ultimately took him off-planet with Obi-Wan, into the Rebellion, and down the path of the Jedi.

A weapon could not be defined by the actions of its owner. But the owner could be judged by how they choose to wield it.

He gave it back to her. "I'm glad it's found a worthy new owner. I was perhaps a little careless with it. Not because the hand holding it got chopped off, though that is how I lost it, but because I faced a challenge I wasn't ready for. Now is a good time, Rey, to prepare for upcoming challenges, in a relatively safe environment. And I'll do whatever I can to help you."

Rey watched Luke's face as he examined the hilt. It must be strange, she thought, seeing it again after so many years of believing it was lost forever. She smiled when he gave it back to her, and she tucked it safely back in her bag.

"Thank you," she said. "I'd certainly appreciate all the help you can manage." And, as he said, it was a relatively safe environment to learn in, as the First Order didn't exist in this place.

Luke smiled and left. He considered approaching Leia, but decided it was probably better to just go talk to her later. Besides, she had been plenty busy talking to other people. She didn't need her brother hanging around.

With one last glance back at Rey, Luke took his leave.
