WHO: Caitlin and Lucifer
WHEN: 226403.16 evening
WHERE: A broken turbolift
SUMMARY: 4 hours trapped in a broken turbolift
STATUS: Ongoing
WARNINGS: None as of yet.

Lucifer was starting to get the hang of life on the Enterprise, and was even starting to appreciate the situation for what it was. He was meeting new people, trying alien forms of liquor and there wasn’t anyone around who had any expectations of him. There was the small detail where he was actively trying to ignore any thoughts of the detective, home, or what life had been a couple short weeks ago. Trivial matters, really.

Stepping into a turbolift, he didn’t even pay attention to the woman in there, just directed it to take him toward the Deck 5 Lounge. The doors slid shut, and the lift started to move. It was a short ride to the lounge, and Lucifer had grown accustomed to it.

This time, however, the lift seemed to lurch to a stop earlier than expected, and Lucifer waited for the doors to open and the woman to exit. Only the doors didn’t open.

“That’s odd,” he said, before the lights flickered off. When they came back on, the lift still didn’t move. “You’ve got to be kidding me,” he said, finally taking a look at the woman with him in the lift, not immediately recognizing her. “You know how to restart this thing?”

Caitlin wasn’t really sure how to fit in on the Enterprise. She had expected upon arrival that she could jump right in the science of it all and enjoy working with the advanced equipment. But she hadn’t really managed to do that yet. She was a lot more worried about her lack of sun, and the effectiveness of her amulet. If it couldn’t keep her powers under control, she was genuinely concerned for everyone on board. She’d kept Killer Frost held back for too long. She wasn’t sure she’d have any control the next time she was unleashed.

She didn’t really notice the man who joined her, completely engrossed in her data pad, scrolling the posts for someone she could befriend. Maybe she was too picky about her friends.

As the turbolift lurched, she looked up, annoyed. The man reacted and Caitlin took in their situation. A tight space, a broken door, and someone else with her. Combined with her anxiety, this was not a good combination. “What? No, I have no idea. I’ve never seen it stop like this before.” She tried to give it new instructions, but the lift didn’t respond. Caitlin sighed, blowing her bangs off her face.

“Right,” Lucifer said cheerfully. “Well there’s got to be an emergency button or a call for help button, or the equivalent, right?” They were in the future after all, technology was far more advanced.

He started scanning for that option and mentioned that he was going to need an extra drink or five after this when a woman’s voice came through the speakers, apologizing for the delay and assuring them that the issue had been brought to the crew’s attention.

“See, not so bad,” Lucifer said, whether to Caitlin or himself was unclear. Then the woman’s voice returned stating, “We estimate the delay at thirty minutes to ten hours.”

“What?!” Lucifer shot back in reply. “That’s not an estimate! And this is a real emergency!” he added, if only because he was being inconvenienced and he wasn’t too accustomed to being inconvenienced yet.

Caitlin scrunched her nose. “Oh, it won’t take ten hours.” Will it? It didn’t seem to make sense for it to take like that long. If anything, couldn’t they pry the doors open and get them out? Seemed strange they could potentially be stuck that long.

More importantly, she wasn’t sure she could keep her powers controlled that long. She swallowed and slid down the side of the lift, pulling her knees to her chest. “It can’t be ten hours,” she whispered quietly.

“That’s the spirit,” Lucifer said cheerfully, but then the woman basically just gave up and sat down and Lucifer stared at her, puzzled. “Right! That’s ridiculous,” he said, staring up at where he expected a camera to be. If there was one there, it was well hidden. “This is Lucifer Morningstar and I’m stuck in here with…”

He paused and turned toward Caitlin. “I’m sorry. What was your name?”

"Caitlin," she replied, taking a deep breath. "Caitlin Snow."

She rubbed the back of her neck and exhaled a heavy sigh. "I hope they're listening. I can't afford to stuck in here too long. Nothing personal—Lucifer, you said?—just, uh, well, some personal health problems."

"What sort of personal health problems?" Lucifer asked, edging away. Not that he could catch anything, without the detective around. He just didn't want some stranger throwing up on him.

She watched him back away and couldn't help but laugh. "Nothing like that. It's a supernatural problem, actually. I—"

She put her hands out in front of her, her fingers blue, the tips of her nails covered in frost. She flexed her hands and clenched them into fists, warming them back to their proper color. "Their a bit uncontrollable, my powers, so I keep them subdued with this pendant." She nodded to the glowing blue snowflake on her chest. "But, it's solar powered. That's hard enough to come by around here on a daily basis, let alone in an elevator, especially when my power was already low."

Now that was interesting, and Lucifer quickly lost interest in attempting to secure an escape from the lift, joining Caitlin on the floor and glancing at her hands, then her pendant, then her. "Uncontrollable, how?" he asked. "That's bizarre, I've never seen anything like that." Except in movies or something, but he left that bit off. This spaceship was already strange enough, he figured he should just roll with it.

"Can you do that again? I want to see just how cold it is," he mentioned, curious more than anything, and holding out his arm to her.

Caitlin hesitated. She didn't know this man. Back at home, amongst her friends, she would only very rarely use her powers on command, and the last time had caused her to nearly lose control. And she probably would have without Julian.

"Where I come from, we call people like me metahumans. Most metas received their abilities from a particular accelerator explosion." Here, of course, may have been a slow reaction to the particular accelerator or simply a consequence of Flashpoint. She hoped she never found out. "Some people can do good with their powers. Some are pretty awful. Mine has the ability to do good, but if I use them too much, my heart turns as cold as my hands."

She reached out for his arm, but didn't activate her powers, not right away. She wanted to understand his motive first. "Why do you want to see how cold it is?"

Lucifer listened to all of that rather impatiently, though the part about her heart turning cold gave him pause. But then she asked him why he wanted to see and he just looked at her. "You just created frost out of nowhere and you don't know why I'd be interested in seeing how that worked?"

Caitlin sighed and realized that while they were stuck, this was a battle she would lose. She pulle the pendant off and let its chain pool in a help in front of her. She closed her hand around his arm and let the cold flow through her fingers. Frosty, intricate patterns of patterns of frost wove around his arm. She pulled back after covering his forearm. Her eyes flashed blue/grey, but returned to normal after a few deep breaths.

"Bloody hell, that's cold," Lucifer said, studying his arm. "Brilliant though, save for the bit where it may or may not destroy your soul." Glancing at Caitlin, he asked, "Doing alright? No heart of ice? That sounds like a raw deal, anyway. Here's this power, but it might destroy you. Cheers!"

"Emotionally cold heart, not physically," she clarified, putting the pendant back on and rubbing warmth back into her fingers. "The more I use them, the colder of a person I become. I once let my powers get the best of me and I nearly killed more than one of my friends. It wasn't go great." She shrugged and looked over at him. "Enough about me. Tell me about you. What life were you leading before you got dropped here?"

"Is there anything you can do to maybe stop that from happening?" Lucifer asked, "other than a solar pendant where there is no sun?"

He shrugged. "Well, for the past six years I lived in Los Angeles, running a night club called Lux and I spent the last year serving as a civilian consultant for the Los Angeles Police Department. Prior to that, I'd spent millennia ruling as the Lord of Hell, punishing the souls of the damned. Until I retired, that is," he offered helpfully.

"I also have cuffs, but the technology on this ship makes it hard to charge them. I wasn't equipped for this, of course," she said with just a bit of a laugh.

But, as Lucifer gave his whole story, Caitlin, turning to him with her brow furrowed. "You're that Lucifer?"

"Oh look who's getting all judgey now, after saying you nearly killed your friends," Lucifer retorted, but his voice wasn't all that serious. "Yes I'm that Lucifer, but look at the bright side! You can't actually kill me if things were to go to hell in here..."

"It wasn't judgey, just not every day you meet, well, you." Although, really, it wasn't that unusual for her the more she thought about it. They'd been spending a lot more time with the Speedforce and of course Barry had decided he could change time whenever he wanted, so perhaps Lucifer wasn't that far off her day to day after all.

"I am relieved I can't kill you, though I really hope we get out of this elevator both perfectly intact."

"And yet here we are," Lucifer replied. "You're stuck in a lift with the devil and we might be frozen by the time we get out of here. Of course, the simple solution would be to just not use your powers anymore. Problem solved!"

But he stood up to interact with the turbolift again, just in case the uncontrollable aspect came into play. "Uh hello out there!" he said, staring at the wall. "An update would be nice!"

He waited a moment in which the silence was noted. "No? Alright then."

At least if he was stuck in that lift, he was with someone interesting. Dropping back down next to Caitlin he asked, "If you can't always control them, aren't you afraid that you might accidentally freeze the entire ship while sleeping?"

Caitlin smiled a bit. It was strange to be able to talk to someone about this who was able to joke. It wasn't a joke, not really, but the levity made her stress out less, which is what finally warmed her hands.

Though disappointed that they Lucifer didn't get a reply from a technician or officer, she didn't mind the conversation. She cleared her throat and pulled her cardigan closer around her chest. "It's a fear I have to live with, to be perfectly honest. Before I had any kind of power dampener, it was especially scary, and I woke up looking more like my alterego once." She paused. "Her name is Killer Frost. She has white hair, blue lips, and silvery blue eyes, plus more swagger than I have. If I can't find a better way to keep the dampeners powered, a visit from Killer Frost is pretty likely to happen."

"Does anyone of any import on this ship know that it might be useful to do flyby near a sun?" Lucifer asked. He assumed it wasn't quite that simple, but surely something could be worked out. "Or maybe they can simulate solar energy somehow? Like a tanning bed?" He wasn't really making light of the situation, but Lucifer Morningstar wasn't a scientist.

At least until she mentioned her alter ego. "So this is a full Jeckyll and Hyde situation, huh? Hot. Or not, I suppose."

She raised an eyebrow at him, but wasn't offended by the hotness factor. Admittedly, she was a little jealous of the clothes Killer Frost from Earth-2 got away with, and she wished she had the confidence to be, well, sexy. "It's not quite Jekyll and Hyde, but sort of. The problem is, well—as long as I don't completely give in to her, thus far I've been able to return back to me. If I for any reason actually gave in, I thinkt he change is permanent. I've met a counterpart from an alternate reality, and there was no Caitlin left in her."

She shook her head and rubbed the back of her neck. "I haven't really talked to the crew about it much. I'm afraid I'll get locked out for it, a danger to everyone and all. I wouldn't blame them."

A crease formed in Lucifer's brow as he listened to Caitlin speak. "Well, I know a bit about wanting to remain myself and not some other, horrific version of me," he replied. "So whatever I can do to help, I will."

Nodding, he offered, "Alright, we'll have to find some solution on our own then." She'd struck a chord with him, and while her particular situation didn't sound like his father, it reminded him of what his father meant for him to be. So he was in, all in, even if they'd just met while stuck on a lift that was clearly going to be delayed more than fifteen minutes.

"No, you're not," Lucifer said, his voice surprisingly stern. "This isn't a deal with the devil, it's... "

He paused, not entirely sure what it was. "Something else." Falling silent for a moment, he then asked, "So besides the freezy stuff, how's the entire space thing going for you?"

Caitlin smiled at the firmness in his voice. "I didn't quite mean it in that context, but yes. Something else."

She pulled her knees to her chest and wrapped her arms around her legs. It wasn't a protective move, but rather just an attempt to stay comfortable. It wasn't working. "My day job is as a scientist. Honestly, this is a dream come true. What about you?"

Thrown momentarily as Caitlin nudged him, Lucifer recovered and said, "Oh. Right. The detective." And then he launched into his story about meeting Chloe Decker after a friend was murdered, helping her investigate the case, saving her after she got shot, and managing to become a civilian consultant for the LAPD. He talked about how she could resist his powers, confounding him, and how the only time he wasn't immortal was when he was near her which he discovered after yelling at her to shoot him.

"So then if we skip ahead to the good part, we're standing on a beach and I'm telling her every reason she deserves someone better than me, because she does, and all of a sudden she kisses me," he said, still somewhat puzzled by that. "And it was different than anyone, man or woman or demon that I've been with."

Then his expression grew sour. "And then I come to find out that my bastard of a father had quite literally placed Chloe in my life, making her as much of a pawn as any of us, and while she had no idea, I don't think, I was rather angry about it."

He continued the story with how she'd been poisoned, how the recipe for the antidote was in hell with a particular bad guy who'd done said poisoning and so, lacking any supernatural means of returning, he'd literally died and gone to hell for her to retrieve the cure. "After nearly getting stuck down there in my own hell, I was shocked back to life. She got better, I bailed. And then I ended up here," he concluded, "And I just want to be back there."

Caitlin listened to his story, smiling all the more as he went along. She tried to stifle the old romantic in here, but it usually still found its way through. And maybe, at a time like right now, where controlling her powers wasn't the easiest thing, she needed to just let the sappiness and sentimentality make itself known. "It sounds like you need to get there as quickly as you can," she said finally with a genuine smile. "Chloe sounds wonderful."

"I doubt this helps at all, but—" as she started, the elevator sprung back to life and they started to move away. "Well, look at that."

She gave me a smile and she moved back to her feet, no small feat in a moving turbo lift. "Well, I don't know if it will or won't, but—speaking from experience, we never forget when a guy sacrifices himself for our benefit. Whether you're stuck here a week or a year, I suspect she'll still be waiting for you. That's all. Again, may or may not help." She shrugged.

He sounded genuinely interested in hearing her reply.

Caitlin raised an eyebrow and shrugged. "That I suspect would depend. She might, if you were gone long enough and thought you'd never see her again. Does she know you're the devil? That might also get you pass. But as a general rule, consider what you want more, and what feels right. Something with someone may be right, but maybe it'll just lead to guilt.

Lucifer grinned. "The weirdest bit about this place is that I tell people that I'm the devil, and you all believe me. Something about traveling through time and ending up on a spaceship does that. I've told Chloe..."

The doors finally opened and they were where Lucifer had intended to be ages before. "Come have a drink with me," he said, taking her hand and leading her out of the lift. It only then occurred to him that he didn't know where she was headed initially but did it really matter presently?

"Anyway, I've told Chloe multiple times but she doesn't believe me. No one did except my therapist but that was only after I showed her my true face, and then she freaked out on me for a bit."

Caitlin was thrilled to step out of the elevator, feeling better already. She had been on her way back to her room, but—well, a drink did sound nice. "I'd love a drink," she said, leaving her hand in his.

"Really? Then, uh, I don't think I want to see your true face, either." She tried to laugh it off, but it was probably unsuccessful. "Clearly Chloe just needs to see a little bit more crazy in her life. Even before I got here, I saw plenty of things that were unbelievable, and now I have powers that scare me to death. Very little surprises me anymore."

"Don't worry, I don't go around showing it off needlessly," Lucifer replied easily. Escorting Caitlin to the bar, Lucifer took a seat and asked, "So what sort of crazy things have you seen to not be surprised to be having drinks with the devil after being trapped in a lift with him?"

Caitlin relaxed into the seat next to him and crossed her arm on the bar top. "Well, we could start with my then supposedly dead fiancé being able to fly and, uh, flame out?—when joined with another guy; they sort of fused into one person courtesy of a particle accelerator explosion. My mentor ended up being an imposter time traveler working on a crazy plot to ruin a friend's life and get himself back to the future. That particular friend can run at superspeed to the point that he can run backwards in time and change the past—a horrible idea, by the way, don't do it. I have another colleague who can open up inter-dimensional portals and see glimpses of the future. And the guy I've mostly recently gotten regular drinks with was posessed by an evil speedforce god for a number of months. We also battled aliens a couple months ago."

She shrugged and smiled over at him. "So, needless to say, the devil? Pretty standard for my day to day."
