Who: Lydia and OPEN
When: 226408.07
Where: Observation Deck
Why: Lydia is exploring
What: Because she still doesn't believe she is on a space ship
Status: Open/On going
Ratings: Low?

Lydia was still hoping this was some sort of dream. That she was going to wake up back in Beacon Hills and in her bed. But she didn't. She was here, on a ship in space. Her red hair flowed freely as she came to wear that uniform the ship provided them. She wasn't a fan of it, but there was nothing she could do about it. Least for right now.

Since Lydia wasn't sure where she was going, she wandered around. That is until she came across an entry that read observation deck. Curious she would enter, and nearly lost her breath. Slowly, she came towards that glass that looked out into space and stars she would come to exhale deeply at this point. Seeing the millions of stars all around made her almost forget about her sadness.

"I dont drink because I'm under age." She replied looking at him for the moment. "And I just don't drink in general." She replied as she came to look at him and his clothing. "What are you? Some sort of cowboy?" She asked as she came to cross her arm over her chest and take a step back from him for the most part.

"I'm Lydia."

"Yeah, some sort of cowboy," Mal agreed. It was true, too, sorta. He grew up on Shadow, son of a ranchowner and raised by more cowhands than was probably healthy. "Used to be anyway. Now I guess I'm just a traveler, no home to call my own."

Mal waited a beat, then held out his hand. "Mal."

"None of us have homes now." She replied as she came to take his hand and shake lightly. Once released she came to look back out the glass to the small planet under them. "What planet is that?" She asked, not sure if he knew. Since she had no idea.

"How long have you been here?" She asked wondering. Since he seemed not too bothered with being here at all.

Mal wandered towards the window and gazed down on the planet below. "They're callin it Fornax. Shepherd Book told me that it's a desert, the whole planet. Not sure why we're here, but I'm told that we're allowed to go down to see it if we want. I'm goin down in a few days."

He glanced up at Lydia. Something in her face gave him that uncomfortable feeling he sometimes got around River. It was the look of a child who was deeply, profoundly unhappy and frightened. Book was right, he figured. Nothing they could do to change what was, so they just had to live with it. "We gotta make our homes here, now.

"I been here about 24 hours or so. But bein' here in the black ain't nothin' new to me. Been flyin' round the 'verse more years than I care to remember."

Lydia did notice the look but didn't say anything about it. "So we both got here the same day." She said as she came to exhale once more and look to the small planet. A desert planet at that as she came to brush her hair from her face. "Please don't tell anyone about the scream..." She said as she came to keep her eyes on the planet and not him.

"Not sure how the crew would feel knowing they have a banshee on board." She stated lightly as she came to finally glance towards Mal. "And I promise no screaming in your direction."

"I ain't gonna go around tellin people that a little bit o' nothin of a girl scared the bejeesus out of me," Mal said, a note of indignation coloring his words. He looked at her a moment, then let out a disbelieving laugh, more of a huff of air than actual amusement.

"Banshee? Ain't no such thing, just a story the cowhands told 'round a campfire to scare a little boy so he didn't run off to the creek at night," Mal continued. "But all the same, I'd appreciate it if you didn't scream at me again. Ears haven't stopped ringin'."

"Im not a story. Where I'm from things that are myths are real." She replied as she watched him. "Banshee's are real. Werewolves are real. Kitsunes. Anything you think isn't real is real." She replied as she came to look tot he planet once more. "I want to go down there." She said as she came to brush her hair from her face once more.

She did note the laugh as she came to ignore it. Lydia was used to being underestimated.

"All right, I believe you," Mal said. He was unsure if he believed her, but he was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. If he could show up in a place where Shepherd Book was still alive and the Alliance didn't exist, except in a way that made it even slightly better, it's possible that banshees could exist.

What he didn't like, however, was someone thinking that he would tell on them. That wasn't the Mal Reynolds way. Regardless, she didn't know that, and unlike River, he couldn't read minds. "They're lettin' people go down a couple times a day. I'm s'posed to go down in a few days, with my engineer Kaylee."

"Is there a place you have to sign up?" She asked as she came to look away from the planet and focus on Mal. She came to take in his clothing once more as she gave a light chuckle. She'd never seen anyone dressed like him before.

"Where are you from anyways?" She asked wondering if he was from the past or if the future turned into the past.

"Don't rightly know. Shepherd Book told me about it, and I figure that whenever I see him next I'll ask," Mal replied, crossing his arms and staring not at the planet, but into the black. Book had said that he could be a pilot here, if he wanted. The idea was tempting, but Mal wasn't ready to let go of his independence just yet.

"Me? I'm from a planet called Shadow. Ain't nobody there now, seein' as it was destroyed some years back."

"I'm sorry." She replied once she learned his planet was gone. "I'll ask him if I ever meet him. I haven't met anyone. Well except you." She replied as she came to watch him for the moment.

Her frame coming to take a seat on the floor as she looked out to the dark skies and stars all around the ship.
