Who: Lydia and OPEN
When: 226408.07
Where: Observation Deck
Why: Lydia is exploring
What: Because she still doesn't believe she is on a space ship
Status: Open/On going
Ratings: Low?

Lydia was still hoping this was some sort of dream. That she was going to wake up back in Beacon Hills and in her bed. But she didn't. She was here, on a ship in space. Her red hair flowed freely as she came to wear that uniform the ship provided them. She wasn't a fan of it, but there was nothing she could do about it. Least for right now.

Since Lydia wasn't sure where she was going, she wandered around. That is until she came across an entry that read observation deck. Curious she would enter, and nearly lost her breath. Slowly, she came towards that glass that looked out into space and stars she would come to exhale deeply at this point. Seeing the millions of stars all around made her almost forget about her sadness.

Mal sprawled in a chair, a bottle of liquor filched from the lounge in his hand. He rested it on his thigh, taking a swig every so often as he stared out the observation deck's large window. Fornax turned below them. Or at least, he thought it did. He had no idea how these Starfleet people orbited planets. In any case, it was a planet unlike any he'd ever seen, a dark burnt orange mottle with a lighter orange, clouds swirling through the atmosphere in the planet's weather patterns.

Mal was, as a rule, used to unusual circumstances. It seemed his entire life had been one big unusual circumstance, so this one shouldn't bother him the way it was. Even talking to Book hadn't really sorted anything out. He had a feeling that he was sulking, because here on this big, pristine, sterile ship he wasn't Captain, and this Enterprise wasn't Serenity. Mal couldn't feel what the ship was doing just by the way it hummed under his feet, and the hold wasn't filled with the chatter that came with his usual crew. Having Kaylee, Simon, and Book around helped, but it just wasn't the same, and Mal missed it.

He felt guilty for missing it, because missing it meant that in some way, he might want Wash and Book dead. Except that he didn't, because their losses were felt in the deepest part of him, a sharp, dull ache that was now mostly receded but always, always there. He'd give his right... well. His right shoe for them to be back. He needed his leg too much to want to sacrifice it for anyone, even Wash.

The peace in the room was broken by the swish of the door opening, and a girl walked in. Her red hair fanned behind her, settling down around her shoulders when she stopped at the window. Mal jumped, nearly dropping the glass bottle holding temporary oblivion, and made a sound halfway between a yelp and a ha: "Yah!"

Drawing a breath, he put the bottle on the floor and sat back in his seat. "Might oughta warn a man when you're going to come in so sudden."

Lydia really hadn't expected anyone to be here. And with her nerves on edge slightly, when the man yelped slightly and the sound of the bottle dropping caused Lydia to turn around quickly. Her hands held out as she let out that scream. It wasn't so loud to break any glass, but it was forceful enough to have the man shoved back against the wall and away from her.

Once that scream and it's force ended Lydia would come to look at the man once more. She wasn't sorry for what she had done. He shouldn't have scared her suddenly. Especially since her nerves were still on edge and this place was not home. A home she needed to get to soon. Before all her friends were dead without her help.

Mal's breath was knocked out of him, and he sat for many moments against the wall, struggling to get enough air to his brain that he could think of something, anything to say to her. While he was startled, it wasn't River-startled. No one could scare a body like River Tam, not even this girl who screamed like a banshee when frightened. If Mal had had an old granny, he was certain that she would have told fireside tales about the mythical creatures. As it was, he had had plenty of cowhands to tell him all about them.

Finally, Mal had enough breath to ask, hoarsely, "You greet everyone like that, or just me?"

Lydia made a light face. "You scared me." She replied as she came to brush her red hair from her face. Still, she came to walk towards him and hold her hand out to help him up. "I'm sorry." She said as she helped him to his feet at this point. She really didn't mean to do that. But he just caught her off guard.

Least, Lydia knew how to control her scream now. Because if not she would have shattered the glass and that wasn't going to help anyone on this ship. Especially since she needed to get back home alive. Not dead.

Ever-so-slightly drunk, Mal needed the help to get to his feet. Once steady, he gave his torso a light pat down, as if to reassure himself that he was all there. Bending over, he retrieved the now-less-full bottle from where it had fallen.

"You scared me, too, but I didn't scream like the Reavers were after me," he pointed out, rubbing the opening in the bottle clean with his shirtsleeve. He took a drink, then held it out to the girl before taking it back real quick. "How old are you? They made it real clear that anyone under 18 wasn't to do anything that kids've been doin since the beginnin of time."

"I don't know what a Reaver is." She replied. She watched as he held out the bottle and took it back. A brow lifted as she watched him closely. "19, and I don't drink anyway." She replied as she came to watch him closely.

Her arms resting at her sides. She exhaled once more. "Besides, I said I was sorry." She said as she made a slight face and came to look in the other direction. Sure, she might have been in the wrong, but it could be worse.

She could have killed him with her scream.

"A -- a Reaver is a man who's looked into the blackest black that space can show a man, and didn't come out the other side," Mal said. It wasn't exactly true anymore, but it was still true enough. "They hunt, kill, eat, rape people, and they don't have to do it in that order."

Mal sighed and put the bottle on a nearby table. "I'm sorry for scarin ya, too. Why don't you drink?"

"I dont drink because I'm under age." She replied looking at him for the moment. "And I just don't drink in general." She replied as she came to look at him and his clothing. "What are you? Some sort of cowboy?" She asked as she came to cross her arm over her chest and take a step back from him for the most part.

"I'm Lydia."

"Yeah, some sort of cowboy," Mal agreed. It was true, too, sorta. He grew up on Shadow, son of a ranchowner and raised by more cowhands than was probably healthy. "Used to be anyway. Now I guess I'm just a traveler, no home to call my own."

Mal waited a beat, then held out his hand. "Mal."

"None of us have homes now." She replied as she came to take his hand and shake lightly. Once released she came to look back out the glass to the small planet under them. "What planet is that?" She asked, not sure if he knew. Since she had no idea.

"How long have you been here?" She asked wondering. Since he seemed not too bothered with being here at all.

Mal wandered towards the window and gazed down on the planet below. "They're callin it Fornax. Shepherd Book told me that it's a desert, the whole planet. Not sure why we're here, but I'm told that we're allowed to go down to see it if we want. I'm goin down in a few days."

He glanced up at Lydia. Something in her face gave him that uncomfortable feeling he sometimes got around River. It was the look of a child who was deeply, profoundly unhappy and frightened. Book was right, he figured. Nothing they could do to change what was, so they just had to live with it. "We gotta make our homes here, now.

"I been here about 24 hours or so. But bein' here in the black ain't nothin' new to me. Been flyin' round the 'verse more years than I care to remember."

Lydia did notice the look but didn't say anything about it. "So we both got here the same day." She said as she came to exhale once more and look to the small planet. A desert planet at that as she came to brush her hair from her face. "Please don't tell anyone about the scream..." She said as she came to keep her eyes on the planet and not him.

"Not sure how the crew would feel knowing they have a banshee on board." She stated lightly as she came to finally glance towards Mal. "And I promise no screaming in your direction."

"I ain't gonna go around tellin people that a little bit o' nothin of a girl scared the bejeesus out of me," Mal said, a note of indignation coloring his words. He looked at her a moment, then let out a disbelieving laugh, more of a huff of air than actual amusement.

"Banshee? Ain't no such thing, just a story the cowhands told 'round a campfire to scare a little boy so he didn't run off to the creek at night," Mal continued. "But all the same, I'd appreciate it if you didn't scream at me again. Ears haven't stopped ringin'."

"Im not a story. Where I'm from things that are myths are real." She replied as she watched him. "Banshee's are real. Werewolves are real. Kitsunes. Anything you think isn't real is real." She replied as she came to look tot he planet once more. "I want to go down there." She said as she came to brush her hair from her face once more.

She did note the laugh as she came to ignore it. Lydia was used to being underestimated.

"All right, I believe you," Mal said. He was unsure if he believed her, but he was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. If he could show up in a place where Shepherd Book was still alive and the Alliance didn't exist, except in a way that made it even slightly better, it's possible that banshees could exist.

What he didn't like, however, was someone thinking that he would tell on them. That wasn't the Mal Reynolds way. Regardless, she didn't know that, and unlike River, he couldn't read minds. "They're lettin' people go down a couple times a day. I'm s'posed to go down in a few days, with my engineer Kaylee."

"Is there a place you have to sign up?" She asked as she came to look away from the planet and focus on Mal. She came to take in his clothing once more as she gave a light chuckle. She'd never seen anyone dressed like him before.

"Where are you from anyways?" She asked wondering if he was from the past or if the future turned into the past.

"Don't rightly know. Shepherd Book told me about it, and I figure that whenever I see him next I'll ask," Mal replied, crossing his arms and staring not at the planet, but into the black. Book had said that he could be a pilot here, if he wanted. The idea was tempting, but Mal wasn't ready to let go of his independence just yet.

"Me? I'm from a planet called Shadow. Ain't nobody there now, seein' as it was destroyed some years back."

"I'm sorry." She replied once she learned his planet was gone. "I'll ask him if I ever meet him. I haven't met anyone. Well except you." She replied as she came to watch him for the moment.

Her frame coming to take a seat on the floor as she looked out to the dark skies and stars all around the ship.
