WHO: Betty Ross and Bruce Banner
WHEN: recently
WHERE: his room
WHAT: they meet... again and again and again
WARNINGS: none, maybe mentions of violence bc of Hulk
STATUS: comm, in progress

______________

Betty sat next to Bruce on his bed. They were at the end, sitting as far away from each other as you can at the end of a one-person bed. She had on slip-on shoes, and she kept slipping her left foot in and out of the shoe. She fiddled with her fingernails.

"They told me I was here before. I'm... I'm sorry. Did we make progress?"

She was nervous. She never stopped looking for him. She was on to something, with one of her father's subordinates, Talbot, feeding her information. She was going to board a plane and search the jungle if she had to.

Besides that, she was a skipped record. Not only had she been here before, but he was from another time. He didn't know about the Civil War between the Iron Man and Capsicle.

If she thought she was nervous, she had no idea. Opening the door to his room and away from any chance of Daniel prying was a thing that needed to happen. Not that he seemed the type, but this was one of those conversations he wouldn't even want Tony listening in on. And seeing her there, looking beautiful and lost and still somehow so determined in a way only Betty Ross could...

He took a breath and nodded. "You were here for quite a while. Not long after I arrived." It felt like forever ago, now. "We... It was more than progress, Betts." She had to understand what that meant. But he also needed her to understand that he wouldn't pressure her. That wasn't a life she'd led. Even if she did still love him, she couldn't be rushed into anything.

"It tore me apart when you left."

She wanted to hold his hand. He had this look about him that made her think he needed a hug. But Bruce always looked like he could use a hug. He was a big wet dog left in the rain.

"Well, now you know how I felt when you left me..." And then she did-- she grabbed his hand and held it to her face. She kissed his knuckle. "Same circumstances. Didn't want to, couldn't stop it."

At that, he had to smile. Just the barest hint, tugging at the corners of his mouth. Only she could make him feel two inches tall and yet incredibly loved at the same time.

He turned his hand in hers after that tender kiss, threading their fingers together. "I don't blame you. Not at all. But god, I understand if you blame me. I'll never be able to justify what I did. Not in your eyes."

"I was in the hospital for some time. They said you came to see me but Thunderbolt chased you out." It meant something to her. She wanted to see him, even if she didn't want him to see her like that-- broken and bruised, because of the mess his monster made.

"You had to go. I don't know why you went the second time, but at least I got my necklace back." She held it up with her free hand, dangling it between her fingers. It was long enough to loop down to her chest.

She would never know how hurt and heartbroken he'd been. None of it was her fault, and he'd never place the blame on her. But he would never get the image of her broken body out of his head. Nor did he want to. It served to remind him of what he could do. Of what they both could do. The being that lived inside of him wasn't just dangerous to buildings or to bad guys. It could affect anyone, even the woman he loved. "He did. But I don't entirely blame him. I wouldn't have wanted me around, either."

The second time... Well. He'd more than had his reasons. "We had a lot to learn still. He and I. You would always be at risk with me. Even now, and we've come a long way since then." He couldn't say he had full control over the Other Guy. Maybe he never would. But the two of them did seem to have a much greater understanding of each other. "I can't promise your safety. I don't know if that's something I can promise anyone."

"You're not in charge of me... if I want to put myself in danger by being near you, that's up to me. You can't stop that. It's my choice. Plus, as long as you don't run away again, I'll just try to find you again."

She squeezed his hand. "Have you had an incident since being on the ship?" She wondered if anyone even knew. Tony would know-- and the Maximoff girl.

She didn't get it. She likely never would. "I'm not in charge of you, but there are times I'm not in charge of me, either. Don't you realize what it would do to me if anything happened to you?" Sighing, he shook his head. His beautiful and brave, not to mention stubborn, Betty wasn't likely to let him off that easily.

Still, she'd squeezed his hand and it was more comfort than she knew. "No," he admitted, smiling a bit sheepishly. "And I've spoken to the Enterprise staff. They all know and we have some backup plans in place." Frankly, as volatile as things had gotten between he and Natasha, he'd rather save a lullaby as a last resort. He wasn't entirely certain the Other Guy would be receptive at the moment.

"He recognizes me now. You saved me when my father was being careless trying to capture you." Betty stared down the Hulk with no fear. She knew Bruce was in there, and that he would remember her.

"Backup plans? Well, I'm here now, that's something, right? I can keep you calm and if you do break out, I can talk you down."

"He recognized you once," Bruce argued, though there was no real fight in his voice. "That doesn't mean it will happen every time. Believe me, I'd like it to." The Other Guy didn't hurt people He liked. He'd even gone out of his way to save lives. Maybe there was still some hope to be had.

"That doesn't always work," Bruce pointed out calmly. "But yes. You being here will help immensely." She'd been following him since he'd left. That didn't mean she knew him. Either one of him.

"I talked you down from it once. And if you tell me some of your triggers-- well I already know you pretty well, but things have changed over the years," she didn't mean to sound rude, but it kind of did. "I can help you stay away from them. It'll be like babysitting only ... not? Wow, that sounds bad. It wouldn't be like babysitting."
