Who: Sulu and OTA
When: Sunday July 23
Where: The Deck Five lounge
What: Hanging out, trying to get his mind off things
Rating: TBD
Status: In progress

Sulu walked into the lounge, ordered his usual drink and took it the table he always sat at. He was off duty for the next 48 hours and he had no idea what to do with himself. Usually he read or worked out or spent time working with the plants in the Arboterum but he found that right now, his heart wasn't in it. Not since he'd talked to Demora earlier in the day. His daughter had had some surprising news and it hit him harder than he'd expected.

Ben was getting remarried.

He knew that there was someone in Ben's life, he'd learned that when he was in San Francsco although he hadn't met the man. Ben had let his name slip and Demora had mentioned "Daddy's friend" but he didn't realize that it was serious. Apparently it was and they were planning a Christmas wedding. While Sulu and Ben's divorce had been amicable and they were still friends, it hurt to know that there was someone new. Especially when it came to Demora. She seemed to like him well enough but he couldn't help but be reassured when she said "but he's not you, Papa." Petty though it might be, he couldn't help but smile at the memory.

Taking a sip of his drink, he sighed and looked around the lounge. He hadn't been keepihng up with the new arrivals lately and didn't recognize anyone currently sitting at the tables. That was okay though, someone would come by soon enough and strike up a conversation. They always did.

"You up for company or is this a drinking alone in a corner kind of night?" Katie asked as she came up to the Helmsman who looked a little like he could use a friend. Or possibly a stronger drink.

She'd stopped by the bar first, grabbing a drink of her own. It was bright red and had kind of a sweet taste, but wasn't like anything she'd tried before. That was one of her favorite parts of being here, though. Trying all these new and brilliant things.

Sulu looked up at the voice and wave a hand at the seat across from him. "Some company would be nice actually. Drinking alone isn't good for anybody." The distraction would be nice and he'd never met the young woman so he wouldn't have to explain any thing in any detail.

"I don't think we've met. You're fairly new aren't you?" he asked. "I'm Hikaru Sulu although most people just call me Sulu."

"No, it isn't, but since when has that ever stopped anyone?" Katie flashed him as grin as she took a seat across from him at the table and set down her drink.

Nodding her head, she reached out her hand to shake it. "I'm Katie," she said. "Katie Bell." Meeting new people was one of the other fantastic parts of being here and she was glad he hadn't minded her joining him. "Sulu, you're the pilot bloke, yeah?" she said.

"It hadn't," he laughed. "I think there's an old song that says 'sooner or later we all drink alone.' Or maybe that's sleep alone. Either way, it's true." Sulu hoped she didn't think he was trying to suggest that she sleep with him but he tended to overthink these things so he'd just pretend he hadn't said that.

"Well, I'm the helmsman so I guess you call that being the pilot. I also do some navigating although most of tha is done by my friend Pavel." Teh two of them worked well together and while they tried to have their shifts at the same time, it didn't alway swork out that way.

Katie laughed at that. "Either way, it doesn't sound like much fun. Better to be with people! Guess it's just lucky for you I came along to save you from a terrible fate." She was teasing, eyes sparkling with a little mischief as she played with the cocktail straw from her glass and grinned over at him.

"Seems like a pretty important post either way you look at it," she commented. "I mean, this seems like a pretty big ship, right? It can't be easy to get her where she needs to go." She was impressed, even if spaceships were really a thing where she was from. Flying a ship had to be harder than flying on a broom, she figured.

"You're right, it's not fun either way." He smiled. It felt good to talk to someone and Katie seemed very nice and right now he could use someone to take his mind off what was going on at home.

"She's the flagship of the fleet," he said, a note of pride in his voice. "I actually got the post when the person who'd been assigned got sick and they needed someone right away. It was pure luck but I'm glad I was in the right place at the right time. I love this ship, I can't imagine not being a part of her."

"That's brilliant, though," she said. "You must've really impressed someone if they let you keep the post after that. You should be proud of that." Katie didn't know what flying a ship entailed, but she thought it had to take a lot of skill, especially for one like this one.

Taking another sip of her drink, she tilted her head at him. "You hungry?" she asked him. "I was just thinking I should see if those replicators can do proper English chips, though they'll probably be rubbish with this drink, but I wouldn't mind sharing if you wanted to grab a bite."

She was hungry, but she wanted to keep talking to him, too.

"Thanks. I don't know if I impressed anyone but I do my best and I love what I do," he shrugged. "I hope someday that I'll actually get to be a captain but that's a long way down the road." His brief experiences as acting captain had given him a taste for command and while he wasn't ready yet, Sulu knew that one day he would be.

"Food sounds like a good idea. And the replicators here are pretty good. They make decent sushi, I tried it to see if it was a good as my mother's. It's not but it's not bad." he grinned at her. "See what they can do with English chips. Those are what we call french fries, right?"

"Well, you've impressed me," Katie commented sincerely, giving him a grin. "Not that it counts for much, but I'm brilliant on a broom, so I like to know I know a good bit about flying. Something like this ship, that'd have to take some real skill. Bet you'd be just as brill a Captain, too." Not that she really had a clue about being captain of a starship, either, but he seemed like a good sort of bloke and maybe she wanted to pay him a compliment, even if she couldn't know whether it was the truth or not.

Laughing, she nodded her head. "I can't believe you even have to ask that. They're like your french friends, but about a thousand times better. You haven't lived until you've had proper English chips, you know."

Looking over at the replicator on the far wall, she made a face. "You know, I haven't had much practice yet, only been here about a week. Is there a trick to getting it to spit out what you want?"

"Just making sure I had the right thing," he said. "but come on, I'll show you the replicator. It's not hard to program it. The trick is to be as specific as you can and you'll usually get something that's pretty much like the real thing. At least that's been my experience."

He got up and led her over to the replicator. "There are a few people on board who actually cook. I'm not one of them though. That's not something that I'm all that good at." As many different things as Sulu enjoyed doing, cooking had never been one of them.

"I'm almost ashamed to be seen with you right now," she teased him as she got up and followed up over to the replicator. Actually, she might be inclined to share with him, so he could see what proper chips were really like.

"I'm not much of a cook, either," she said as they walked. "My best mate, Alicia, she's brilliant in the kitchen, but I'm pretty rubbish with that stuff." They approached the replicator and she looked over at him. "Alright, flyboy, show me how it's done."
