Who: Daniel Jackson & Hoshi Sato
Where: Lounge
What: Meeting and talking about culture
When: Not long after he arrived
Rating: Low
Status: Incomplete

Daniel might have more than slightly geeked out more than slightly when he realised that Hoshi was here. He had always liked her as a character - and she was attractive - seeing a lot of him - mostly his love of languages - in her, though the ease she had learned them had always made him envious. Being able to meet her and work with her was amazing and he was really looking forward to it. This entire situation though was amazing and given everything that he had encountered over his time with the Stargate program that said a lot.

Arriving in the lounge a good fifteen minutes before the time they agreed to meet - which was surprising as he often ran late due to getting involved in something - he found a counch to sit on near the window. Staring out at the stars was amazing. As he'd told Vala while it wasn't the first time he'd be on a spaceship they weren't being shot at and he had time to actually learn things, which was unusual. Usually their space trips ended up in a fight for their lives.

Plus this was Star Trek. Not the Star Trek he was familiar with but still Star Trek and the giant nerd in him was loving it. Still disbelieving but if Atlantis was real why not this? He wouldn't have guessed it but he had stopped being - mostly - surprised by things a long time ago. Or liked to pretend that he had because the Universe still liked to through him in unusual situations.

"I've never been big on putting too many labels on something like that. I guess it comes from thinking of language as an art but also as patterns." Hoshi said with a small shrug.

"The 1900s, now that sounds like a really long time ago for me, and not just because we're in the future," Hoshi said with a small laugh. "The technology has improved a lot, and the Federation is a huge step forward, that wasn't around for me. Our Captain, Captain Archer, wanted something like it, and we were moving towards that direction, but it hadn't happened for me yet. For one thing, the ships are a lot fancier in the future."

Daniel nodded, it made a lot of sense and he agreed with everything that she was saying. It was unusual for him to meet someone like that. Well he supposed many linguistics were but he wasn't the most popular of people back home in his field of study. Suggesting that alien's constructed Egypt's pyramids... Well it had him labelled eccentric at best even if he turned out right in the long run. "That would make sense, languages are taught as identifiable patterns and rules that go together."

"I suppose it would be," he mused thinking about it. "It was only forty odd years for me since the start of the rush of inventions but even in my time a lot of things are rapidly changing. I can imagine it continued to do so. I think that he'd achieve it," he replied choosing his words carefully. He knew he did but he was basing it also on the information that they had access too here. "I can't imagine the ships being too different?" he asked frowning. Maybe comfier as they got used to it but surely they hadn't changed that much?

Smiling, it was nice to talk to someone who agreed and who understood. Sometimes Hoshi felt like most people didn't understand her, or understand why she did some things. She got the impression that Daniel dealt with some of that too.

"Um, the basic design of the ships are really similar, but this one is a lot bigger, and has a lot of amenities that we never had. A whole movie theater? We just to just watch them in the mess and it was never fancy. A fully stocked lounge? Yeah, a lot of that has changed a lot and looking that Universal Translator has, well, let's just say sometimes I'm surprised they still need linguists with how quickly and accurately it works."

Daniel nodded. He knew this of course but at the same time he didn't? He'd noticed things from a fans perspective, living on both would have been completely different. Still, he was kind of glad he had been correct in his assumptions.

"It does seem big," he agreed. From what he could tell the ships even into this future got even bigger, especially the Enterprise under Picard. "I can't see us ever getting bored especially with the Holodeck. From what I read there's no limit to what that can do which is amazing. I'm glad that there is still a need for them - as you probably agree - given we'd probably be out of a job otherwise. I most likely will go the linguistics route," he said after a moment. It seemed the best route for him, he could explore the culture and help the scientists in his spare time. Or as a second job.

"The holodeck is almost overwhelming all the things that you can experience in it. It's remarkable to see some of what it can do. Sometimes it's hard to remember that it isn't real," Hoshi sure felt that way a few times, but she'd been using it more to see how the world had changed and what happened.

"Nothing can replace human connection, and technology, even as advanced as all of this is," her hand waved around, "can fail and we'd be screwed, so, hopefully, we'll always be needed in some capacity of another." She smiled. "Well, if you go that root, we'll probably end up working together."

"I think that's what worries me most. It would be so easy to forget we weren't here, to imagine we were back home or wherever we program ourselves to be..." he replied with a shrug.

"Well yes that is true, I'm used to the limitations and while I've seen some I wasn't sure if it was my skills not being used to the technology of this time or just because it is technology in general?" he explained.

"That is a danger of it, but at the same time, there is a lot to see here and so much to explore maybe it'd be hard not to want to know what was out here in this world," Hoshi mused.

Hoshi nodded, "I guess that'll take a little bit more experimentation."

Daniel nodded at that. "I suppose that is true. There is so much to learn and see it is hard to imagine not wanting to experience it. The holodeck just offers the opportunity to explore what we have missed in the intervening centuries as well and I suppose the future and alternative worlds too," he mused.

"Which will be fun. Sam - she's a friend from home - would probably be better on the technical side of it though," he shrugged.

Nodding. Hoshi could only agree.

"Do you have other friends from home? Or is it just the one? I feel bad for some of the people here who know no one, I know most people are very welcoming, but it's nice having people around that you already know."
