WHO: Carol Marcus and Jim Kirk
WHEN: 226407.04 afternoon
WHERE: Kirk's office
SUMMARY: Expressing concerns over the project she had just been pulled off of.
WARNINGS: Talk of potential death?

Part of Carol thought that she probably shouldn't be doing this. Project Genesis had made it very clear that this project was classified, and that sharing information about it with people outside of the project could be grounds for dismissal from Starfleet. Well, Carol didn't always follow the rules to the letter, and when something left her feeling uneasy then she would do something about it. Telling Jim was probably a good move. Carol trusted him. He was high-ranking enough in Starfleet that she felt that even if there was blowback from her sharing classified information, he would go to bat for her. Compared to some other captains she'd worked with, Carol felt that he meant it when he said that the Enterprise crew was a family.

She sat down across from him in his office, glad to finally be getting this off of her chest. "Thank you for agreeing to meet with me, Captain."

Jim raised an eyebrow and pursed his lips together as he listened to her. "What kind of progress had you been making with it?" he wondered. The idea of being able to rework a planet without resources and make it so that it could be used again. "Would the end goal be for planets that weren't already populated ever or ones that had been and the resources were used up and destroyed?"

"Mostly the former, but it could potentially be used for the latter as well," she replied. They had done a relatively good job of preserving whatever resources were left on Earth over the past hundred years, but having this technology certainly wouldn't hurt.

"We've been moving steadily along," Carol continued. "The reason I was asked to be on the project was because of my knowledge of torpedoes. The hope is that they can use a torpedo-like object to deliver the necessary elements to change a planet's makeup on a subatomic level."

Jim thought that was an interesting task to put forth. He did wonder, however, in either situation, whether or not it would be in opposition to any of Starfleet's rules and regulations. Not that he cared that much for following the rules. Not to mention, if Starfleet put this project together, then it probably didn't matter at all in the end.

"Huh," he said, rubbing his jaw.

"We've tried some small scale tests and been successful, so I think they'll be looking into a large scale test soon. The technology really is extraordinary."

Carol folded her hands in her lap as she continued. "My concern is that there have been rumors that some of the people on the team may co-opt this technology to do exactly the opposite of what is intended and destroy planets. The torpedo devices can deliver elements like oxygen and carbon, but they can also technically deliver radon. I wouldn't put stock in rumors and would generally trust my coworkers, but I saw some files that made me think twice."

Jim found himself fascinated with watching her talk. It didn't surprise him. Carol Marcus had fascinated him from the moment he met her. Now was certainly no different. He smiled, his lips quirking a little, and nodded. Off-handedly, he wondered why the decision was made to bring her to the Enterprise, but maybe this wasn't the best time to ask that question.

"I've found that a lot of things intended for good can be co-opted for destruction or weaponized. Maybe this project is just something that needs to be kept an eye on. We can talk to Admiral Pike about that too. I'm sure he'll want to be made aware."

Carol liked Jim too. Moreover, she respected him, which went a long way with her. If she had to be pulled off her project, she was glad at least to be put back on the Enterprise.

She nodded before continuing. "Yes, I think that would be wise. How incredible it is that he's here!" Carol hadn't known Pike very well in life, but he'd seemed like a good person, another person she could respect. She was glad that she might get the chance to know him now.

"Anyway, I wasn't able to get copies of the files, but I do know who created them. I think that my knowledge of them was what may have gotten me reassigned to the Enterprise."

"It sure helps me out," Jim said, but that was all the explaining he was going to do. Having Admiral Pike back alive was a good thing for Jim, allowing him to have access to a mentor like like, a, well, a father figure if he wanted to admit it. But it was hard to come to terms with now and again too, and often Jim felt like Pike ought to be in the captain's chair and not him. (That's something else he wasn't about to admit.)

He shrugged. "Even if that's what got you here, that's a plus for me. For us. For the crew, I mean," he smoothly corrected with a grin.

"It's nice to have more hands in leadership, I'm sure," Carol replied. She never would have guessed that Jim felt that level of insecurity as he always seemed so confident. In her opinion, he was an excellent captain, one of the better ones she had worked for.

She smiled back at him, eyes meeting his for a moment and then looking down at the desk. "Right," she said. "If I have to be on a Starship, I'm glad it's this one. I never thanked you for not reporting me after I technically lied my way onto this ship the first time."

His grin grew. "If I reported someone any time they broke a few rules, especially tiny ones, then I'd be out of a job myself," he said with a shrug.

"I know that," she replied. "Glad you're not a hypocrite." Carol hadn't ever found him to be one. "Are you adjusting to having all of these travelers here?" It was certainly a different experience, but also exciting to speak to so many people from so many different times and places.

Jim leaned forward a little bit. "I don't mind having them here," he told her. "Of course, I don't necessarily interact with them all that much, considering I spend more time on the decks they don't have access to. But I like the excitement of the entire situation, sure." Unlike Spock who would dump them all off on an abandoned planet and let them fend for themselves, it seemed. No, that was unfair. Spock wouldn't do that at all. He just didn't want them on the ship.

"At least they're not much of a distraction then. And they can't help it that they're arriving here." Carol assumed that Starfleet scientists were working on the how and the why regarding the travelers and she was curious to see what they had come up with so far.

"Well, I think that's it," she said, standing up. "Feel free to pass the information along to Admiral Pike." Her eyes met his and she smiled again. "I really am glad to be back with you, Captain... with the crew, I mean."

Jim couldn't help but smile right back at her. "I'm really glad to have you back too, Carol." Yes, he purposefully used her name, even though maybe he shouldn't have. He motioned into the air and nodded. "I'll pass along the info and we'll see what comes of it. In the meantime, let me know if you need anything, won't you?"

It actually felt kind of good that he was being informal with her. She had liked to think that they were on a first name basis when they were alone together, but it had been so long that she wasn't sure how to approach it. It was better to let him set the tone.

"I will. Thank you... Jim." Carol nodded and turned to exit his office.

He grinned back at her as she headed for the door. "You're welcome."
