"If it is, they're bound to find them eventually. I mean sure, it seems like a big ship at first but that one guy on the logs was right. It's getting smaller every day. Enclosed spaces and all that. No one can hide out on here forever. At least, I think."

Tony squinted, like he wasn't exactly sure. "I mean you can't even access the computer here to get anywhere it doesn't want you to without clearance. And where I come from I know how to get access that I don't normally have. But I can't do a thing with it here. And yes, that's admitting that I tried."

Mary agreed that it did seem to be getting smaller based on how much she explored and became more familiar with the ship. Someone on board would know all the most remote places to look for people.

"You tried to... break in?" Mary asked. It wasn't quite the right term, but she couldn't think of another one that worked. "I can ask the Captain for his opinion, if it would be possible that someone on his crew is bringing us all here for some reason."

Tony nodded his head, looking a bit sheepish. "I... yup. I tried to break in. No real way to do that, though. Space just isn't my element. I think I'm going to have to go back to school. Do you think old dogs can learn new tricks?"

He asked, then waved his hand in the air like he was tossing that question aside, "Don't answer that. But DO talk to the Captain, yes. I have this feeling like he'd listen to you."

"I think they can," Mary said. "I learned about how to run the financial side of my family's estate just a few years ago." She had been proud of herself. Not only was it a vital job, it gave her a sense of purpose beyond being an upper class lady.

She sipped her drink and glanced over at Tony. "Why do you think he'd be more likely to listen to me?"

Well, he'd told her not to answer that, but then she did it anyway. But he liked the answer, so he decided not to interrupt her as she spoke. Which was rude to do to a Lady like her, anyway. And the fact that she'd learned all of that so recently was just another thing to respect her for.

So he nodded, and then he shrugged a shoulder, "Because you're you, Princess. You talk in that way that commands respect and attention, and a ship's Captain stands up and listens to people like that. Or at least, that's what I figure."

Mary smiled at his words. "I appreciate your faith in me, Mr. Stark. Captain Kirk seems like a reasonable man, though he is very clearly in charge. I don't know if I could sway him in any manner, no matter how commanding my tone."

She was used to wielding a certain amount of power back him, but she also realized that she was no longer at Downton. Things didn't necessarily bend to her whim here.

"You'd make more progress than me, anyway. When I take on a commanding tone people usually just shout over me and start saying things like 'Tony, no' and 'Tony, why are you such a-'" He cut himself off and grinned at her, "A uhm... you know. An Ass. Yes."

Of course he'd meant to say the word 'Dick' but he wasn't sure that word even had the same connotations in 1900's England. Didn't they have a dessert with that name in it? "You probably have more ability to sway things around here than you think. Sure, there's a chain of command. But polite requests from noblewomen are a thing, too."

"Really?" Mary asked with a gentle laugh. "You seem like a type of man whom people would listen to, one who makes sure that his voice is heard no matter what."

She shrugged, looking down at her glass. "I suppose I can flirt with him and see where it gets me." Her tone was teasing, though she might not mind flirting with the Captain. He was a handsome man.

"To be clear, I'm not asking you to do that. Flirt, I mean. That wasn't my intention anyway." Tony said, though he didn't sound jealous. "Though I guess he's a pretty good looking guy, so maybe you wouldn't even mind. I mean, you know - you do you. But getting him to talk about it would be better than nothing. Plus, you might get a kiss out of it or something."

If that was something Mary wanted, Tony figured she should have it. "But no, I mean - large groups of people who think I'm awesome, those guys listen to me. But the Avengers - that would be my immediate peers - would rather listen to a blonde guy whose torso is the shape of a dorito, and who prefers sitting very high up on the moral high ground. You may have met him, he's here. His name is Steve."

"Flirting is incredibly easy," she replied. It was like breathing to her. The idea of the Captain responding and kissing her seemed silly though. Handsome or not, they were from completely different worlds.

Mary furrowed her brow for a moment, then recognition dawned on her. "Oh, Mr. Rogers? Yes, we've met. Quite a gentleman." She smiled, wondering if Tony would hate that comment. "I hadn't realized you knew each other. It sounds like the two of you are not agreeable."

"Well... the term for us in my age would be 'frenemies'. It's like when you're friends with a guy but you also want to punch him in the face repeatedly. You've got each other's backs when it counts, but other times you're shouting at each other. For the record, he does inspire others to be better. Me included. And he's pretty much a legend where I'm from. Hard not to respect the guy, even if you grew up your whole life resenting his existence." Tony rambled for a few moments, then looked down into his glass.

He let out a sigh. "This glass is too empty. And you don't need to hear about this stuff. It's the way past, anyway. Trying to get along with everyone here."

Frenemies. Now there was an interesting word. His relationship with Steve actually sounded exactly like her relationship with her sister Edith. They were definitely frenemies. Mary would have to remember that word.

"It does sound like a complex story, but I'm always open to conversation," she said. "An empty glass is easily remedied here."

If he didn't want to talk about it, it was fine, but she at least wanted to put the invitation out there.

Tony glanced at Mary, and gave her a smile. "Lets fix the empty glass part and do some mingling. I can't go telling you all my secrets all at once, Princess. What would we have to talk about next week?"

She returned his smile with a genuine one of her own. It wasn't an outright grin, but one could tell that there was warmth behind it.

"You're going to keep me in suspense then?" She too finished her drink and motioned to the bartender for another. "Do you think we would run out of topics to discuss, Mr. Stark?"

"It's always possible. And then you might really get to know me and find out I'm boring after all." Tony remarked, with a sheepish grin. The bartender filled his own glass, and he got up from his chair.

Tony toasted Mary with his now full glass, "This was a nice chat, though." And he genuinely meant that, which he hoped was clear. "See you around, Lady Mary."

"I doubt that shall be the case." He was an interesting man and Mary enjoyed talking to him. She raised her refilled glass to him as well. "I'm sure that I'll see you again quite soon." For how massive this ship was, it sometimes felt incredibly small.
