Welcome to the Hawaiian Luau!

All characters who joined the Hawaiian Islands excursion are invited to a traditional luau and pig roast in honor of the travelers. Enjoy drinks, dinner, hula, live music, a private beach, and each other.

She was dressed in a tank top and shorts, with a flower printed sarong tied around her waist. And she was clean. That was just as rare as seeing her out of coveralls.

"Oh yeah, the pineapple was great," Kaylee said with a grin. Fresh fruit was amazing. She might try to squirrel some away to bring back on the ship. When Simon asked what was in her drink, Kaylee took a thoughtful sip. "Hmm. Rum, definitely. Some kinda orange flavor too."

The best part, though, was how relaxed she looked. They'd had so few chances to relax on the Serenity. He knew that was a great deal his fault. So seeing her smiling and enjoying herself definitely made him feel a bit more at ease.

"I may have to try one. Isn't there some rule about mixing your liquors, though?" He thought maybe getting intoxicated might not be the best idea, but andrink or two spread throughout the night couldn't hurt. "Want a sip?" He offered, holding his drink towards her. "It's called a pina colada." And Mal would have mocked him to the ends of the verse and back for such a frilly drink, but the second he'd heard it had pineapple, he'd had to have one.

She felt relaxed for the first time in a while. Dealing with that horrible bounty hunter had been very stressful. The Enterprise was almost like a dream compared to it.

Kaylee shrugged. "I've done it before and been fine." And of course she would try his drink. She would even sip out of his straw. It might be the closest she ever got to kissing him. "That's good too! I think everything's good here."

There was a chance he watched a bit too closely as she drank from his straw. It wasn't his fault she had really nice lips. And that was probably a strange feature to be watching, wasn't it?

"I sort of wish we could stay longer," he agreed, straightening a little and trying not to look quite so awkward. "But I'm looking forward to working with the team on the ship. Their equipment is so sterile." Sterile. He'd chosen the word sterile? He'd read about how Hawaii was built on volcanoes. If one of them wanted to open up and send them all running right then, that would be fine.

"Whole ship seems pretty sterile," Kaylee agreed. It was so clean - way cleaner than Serenity ever was. It made Kaylee wonder how it stayed that way. "Even the engine room's pretty clean. Suppose it gets greasy when you get into it a bit, but mostly the oil comes off pretty quickly. They've got some wash stations set up down there."

She took her plate of food and motioned for him to follow her towards a table. "You got real advanced medical stuff on there?"

Well she didn't seem to think he was a total idiot for his stupid comment, so that was something. "It's more regulated than Serenity was. Starfleet probably requires a lot of perfection. For safety." It was official. He couldn't be more boring.

Still, he followed her, balancing his plate and his drink. "It's more advanced than we had back home," he agreed. "Much more like what I'm used to on Osiris. There's a few differences, some things I'll have to catch up with, but the team down there has been great at teaching me."

He wasn't wrong about the ship being sterile. Kaylee didn't mind too much that this was what she and Simon were talking about. She was used to how Simon was, and it wasn't as if they were on a date anyway.

"Core planets always got more than we did," she said, without a bitterness to her tone. Another statement of fact. Maybe she could at least try to steer the conversation in a direction that was more fun. "But, hey, while we're here, we should hike up to that volcano. Still ain't done that."

"You want to hike up a potentially dangerous volcano?" Simon blurted the words with very little urge to take them back. Of course she'd want to do that. Too much time with the likes of Mal and Zoe was what that was.

Still. It would get him some time with Kaylee. And maybe he could even avoid boring her with useless volcano facts. So long as they didn't die. "I guess we could probably squeeze that in before we leave."

	Kaylee looked up at him with a furrowed brow. "Well, yeah," she said. "Must be fine or they wouldn't let us do it, right? Besides, how many times can you say you've been in a volcano?" Hesitantly, he put himself out there just a bit more. "Maybe I'm just afraid you'll see how out of shape I really am." Which wasn't entirely true. But it also wasn't completely a lie. He wasn't exactly fat or lazy, but he was no athlete. They didn't exactly have a lot of opportunities for hiking on the Serenity.

"I won't be calling it fun when I'm needing a respirator, after all."

	Well, that sealed that. His cheeks turned pink and his mouth actually opened and closed as he tried to think of something to say that wouldn't sound entirely too stupid for words. "River often tells me i don't have enough fun," he admitted with a little laugh. And he knew it wasn't entirely inaccurate. He could be too serious sometimes and that wasn't entirely his fault. The last couple of years had been stressful. His entire world had revolved around saving River and keeping her safe.

Now? Now he wasn't entirely sure what to do with himself. "Did you have any other Hawaiian plans? Swimming, perhaps?"

	Kaylee knew that too, as well as his motives behind it, though she wished he would take some time for himself sometimes too. Maybe now that they were here and River was safe from the people hunting her it would be easier for him. "Oh yeah, definitely swimming. Did that today and got a bit burned." The doctor mode took over and he looked at her more closely. "Oh, Kaylee. I'm sure there's some lotion or something we can find to help soothe that." If they'd been back home, he knew exactly what would work. But they weren't and he only had brought the most essential items in his medical bag.

"I've missed swimming, honestly. Not a lot of chances to do so back home." Here, though, they were surrounded by water. And who knew when they'd get a chance like this again.
