Finding the perfect drink had proven to be a challenge. Every week Ahsoka would order something else or suggest some kind of combination and yet nothing really appealed to her. She wasn't that into fruity flavors and a few other combinations had proven to either taste bad or be outright toxic to her biology.

And she didn't actually like the taste of the brandy the ship had, but it worked for the time being. Ahsoka knew she probably just wasn't much of a drinker, but it would be nice to have something now and again.

She took her drink and a snack of dried meat over to a window table and settled in to people watch.

"May I join you?"

Gaeriel stood just to her right with a drink in hand — something sweet, nonalcoholic. Her sensitive, refined palate couldn't handle the bitterness of what alcoholic beverages were available. After a lifetime of drinking namana liquor, everything else tasted downright horrid.

Looking up, Ahsoka nodded and smiled. "Of course. Have a seat. I was just people watching."

One could learn a lot about people by watching them. The Force also revealed plenty of other information if one listened just right.

Yet another tidbit of information Gaeriel had learned from the enigmatic Luke Skywalker, who went out of his way to squash the misleading image her religion had painted of the Jedi. She regarded them with fear and looked upon their demise as a morality tale prior to his arrival, but he'd helped her to see past the lies, to think for herself instead of allowing her faith to carve a path for her she wasn't necessarily comfortable with following.

That Luke was different from the one that was here, or so she was told. She hadn't spoken to him yet (as of this thread) and wasn't sure if she wanted to. Not if he wasn't the Luke Skywalker she remembered. The one she—

"Thank you," Gaeri took a seat across from her, setting her cup on the table. "People watching is something politicians do frequently. Most often with one another."

The feelings coming off of Gaeriel were a jumble, but Ahsoka ignored them for her privacy's sake. "That sounds right, from what I remember. I spent a lot of time with Padme and Bail. It took me years to truly appreciate what they'd down and how much hard work it was, but when you're sixteen it's all very boring. Of course, when you become a rebel in my position, people watching suddenly becomes even more important."

All those missions with Anakin and Obi-wan where they'd been in cover had been very educational, too.

"Bail Organa?"

Unfortunately, Padmé's prominence was one she'd only just learned of. Perhaps it was common knowledge at one time, but there were many aspects of the Old Republic that the Emperor worked hard to suppress. Those who recalled it didn't speak of it, especially not beyond the boundaries of her homeworld, where she was regarded as something of a martyr. A local hero slain by the revolting Jedi — not that Gaeriel was aware of that. Bakura's isolated location meant that many things the Empire kept out of school curriculums were left out anyway.

"Yes, Bail. He was a good friend of mine. When the Rebellion started, he recruited me early on." It made sense that so many things would be hidden or erased. Palpatine had spent decades working on his plan, thinking that he wouldn't have access to records and control of the media would be foolish. Still, part of Ahsoka had hoped...

"I tried to disappear. It didn't really work out. Even when I thought I'd found a place to settle for awhile, the Empire would show up for unrelated reasons and hurt the people that were becoming my friends. I was a child soldier, I guess fighting is in my blood."

"There were whispers," she told her companion, "and rumors spread about him when the Empire came to Bakura. Nothing good, and nothing terribly believable, but to question even hearsay was to draw unnecessary attention to yourself. We deluded ourselves into thinking that falling in line and doing what the Empire asked of us was for the good of Bakura. In the end, the Empire sold us out to the Ssi-ruu. We were doomed, pawns no matter what we said or did."

And if the Rebels hadn't come to their rescue, Gaeriel would have either perished or had her essence enteched into a state-of-the-art battle droid. She didn't like to think about it.

"I attempted to resist, to do what I was told, but I couldn't just stand idly by while my people suffered. I wanted to believe in the Empire, but I couldn't after they so willingly invited invaders to our door." She smiled a bit, gently. "Sometimes, all you can do is fight back, whether you're a child soldier or a naïve politician."

"That's the way of the Sith. They did the same when the controlled the Separatists, so it's no surprise the Empire would as well. What happened to your planet happened to many others during the Clone Wars." There was some irony in being a Rebel after spending three years fighting the Seps, Ahsoka knew. She now understood what the regular people had been fighting for.

"It is easy to let yourself be duped. It's harder to do the right thing, especially when it's not always clear what that right thing is. Or without knowing who's an enemy, and who's a friend."

"Sith?" That's a term she hadn't heard before. While Luke had enlightened her to the fact that the Emperor had been a wielder of the Force, she didn't have a word for what it meant to do so while rooted in the Dark Side. (Likely, because Luke hadn't, either.)

"I lost my parents in the second uprising," she said, looking down at her cup. "The Empire purged our cities of the insurgents who would question them. I was afraid of suffering the same fate."

"The Sith are the antithesis to the Jedi. Dark Side wielders." It was probably too complicated to summarize, but that was a basic enough explaination. "I'm sorry about your parents. I understand needing to keep your head down."

The year after the Purge had been difficult, and Ahsoka's presence had nearly gotten some very good people killed.

"I see," she said with a nod. Gaeri suspected there was more to it, but there would likely be parts of that explanation that would be difficult for her to follow, seeing as she wasn't a Force-user herself. She just had a polarizing presence. (Whatever that meant. Luke hadn't elaborated, and she hadn't asked.)

"It is what it is. Bakura wouldn't be where it is now without having endured those hardships. We needed to see the darkness before we could find the light."

"A part of me wishes that weren't so, but too often it is. I'd say that's true, even for myself. Even if certain events hadn't happened, I would have left the Jedi eventually because of that."

Ahsoka believed that to be true. After Mortis and the end of the Clone Wars, she would have left. It had just taken Barriss framing her for her to see the truth sooner.

"Why did you leave the Jedi, if I may ask?" Though if she declined to answer the question, Gaeri would understand. She had her own list of topics she would rather not speak of.

"Simply put, they didn't trust me," Ahsoka explained. "Something bad happened, and I was framed for it. And instead of helping me, they expelled me from the order and let me stand trial for a crime I did not commit. Only when the real culprit came forward was I spared what might have been the death penalty."

She folded her hands on the table. "They told me that this must have been my trial, and that I would be welcome back as a Jedi Knight. I turned it down, because my experience in trying to clear my name had shown me that I could no longer rely on them. And even if her methods were wrong, the one who framed me had made a very good point about the Jedi and the war."

"The Jedi lacked balance," Gaeri said carefully. "I don't agree in the way they were purged from our galaxy, but I do think that they needed to rethink their ways."

Granted, her knowledge of the Old Order was limited and painted with varying shades of propaganda meant to leave them sitting in the most unfavorable of lights. Like the Empire had done the galaxy some sort of grand favor in eliminating them. But although she understood a large part of that to be false, the the best lies were rooted in truth. And that was a really good lie, one of the Empire's grandest.

"I've only met one Jedi. In my time or version of the galaxy, however that works, he's the only one. The last — or the first, if things go his way."

"Would that be Luke?" It was fitting, from where Ahsoka was sitting, that Luke would be the one to carry things forward. Though she wondered what happened to Kanan, and Ezra. There'd been so much potential in both of them to help form a new Jedi Order. One less tied down by tradition, and one more focused on compassion.

A nod of confirmation. "Yes, Luke Skywalker. He's responsible for not only bringing Rebel troops to Bakura during our time of need, but also saving my planet from the Ssi-ruu. I thought he was lost to them at one point after we were both infected with a parasite, he managed to use those Jedi talents of his to thwart it in ways that I could not."

She had needed a doctor, a way of driving the parasite out of her lungs to prevent it from eating her alive. A so-called courtesy that Nereus had only paid her, because he had been interested in her in ways that she wished he hadn't been. Luke, however, had not, and she'd been convinced he'd fallen victim to the Imperial scheme until he showed up alive after the battle and took down the corrupt, greedy governor himself.

"Those Jedi talents can be very useful. They've gotten me out of trouble more times than I can count. I don't know about Luke, but the Order also taught us how to survive and fight even without the Force, or a Lightsaber. How to negotiate and work with people." Ahsoka frowned. The Clone Wars had changed that focus until the Jedi she'd thought she'd known had ceased to exist.

"Luke sounds like someone very special. Even from my talking to the one here, I can tell."

Luke was everything good about Anakin with everything good about Padme.

"The one here isn't my— Isn't the one I know," she stated firmly.

Gaeri was okay with a duplicate of Princess Leia, but she wasn't sure how she felt about there being one of Luke here. Especially after how close the two of them had become throughout that ordeal. Nevermind the attraction, she wouldn't be able to rely on that foundation of trust that had been built in spite of their differences and varying opinions. She'd have to start all over again with someone she knew, but didn't know her.

"From what I can tell, I come from the same version of our galaxy that General Solo does."
