WHO: Mary Crawley and Peggy Carter
WHEN: 226405.08
WHERE: Traveler liaison office
SUMMARY: Mary and Peggy are trapped in the closet traveler liaison office during the red alert.
WARNINGS: Probably none

Mary found herself pacing, which she knew wouldn't help anything other than to possibly soothe her anxiety about being trapped in the traveler liaison office for an undetermined amount of time. There was nothing else that she could do anyway with the ship locked down. Thank goodness Peggy was with her. If Mary was by herself, she might have been even more terrified.

She sighed and looked across the room at Peggy. The other woman seemed much more calm, and she was sure that had to do with Peggy's line of work back home. She must have been in stressful situations all the time. This was more than what Mary usually dealt with on a daily basis.

"Do we have any food in here?" Mary wasn't hungry yet, but she wasn't sure how long they would be stuck in here. It was something that needed to be considered.

Peggy didn't look up from her PADD, on which she was checking through to see how everyone else was handling their situation. "I have some snacks stashed away, yes," she said. "And tea, though I realize that drinking tea will make our lack of a restroom slightly more difficult." Peggy glanced up and gave a wry smile over to Mary. She figured the other woman had never been in a situation like this, and she hoped it wouldn't be a problem. Peggy, on the other hand, had spent days in worse places than this. "I know I definitely have some kind of chocolate," she said. "It's not from Earth but it's still delicious."

Well, tea wasn't so bad, though Peggy was right about the bathroom situation. Mary hoped that it wouldn't come to all of that and that they would be out soon. Jim had sounded rather confident on the announcement.

"Good. It is better than nothing. At least we probably won't starve."

She went back to pacing. It was probably going to end up driving both she and Peggy crazy.

"I'm sure if there were any chance of starvation, Captain Kirk would find a way to ensure that everyone receive the necessary food." She had no doubt that the Enterprise crew had things under control. She just wished she could do something about it.

"I wonder," she said a moment later. "We're stuck in here and presumably people are stuck in their quarters or on the bridge and such, but what about people who were between places? Are they just sitting in a corridor somewhere?"

Mary heaved a sigh and forced herself to sit down at her desk so that she would stop pacing.

"I suppose they would be stuck in the corridors, unable to get into anything. They could roam around as much as they wanted to."

It would be a lot more space than the office, though probably less comfortable and without any food at all.

Peggy laughed a little. "I'm not sure which situation is better or worse. Though I also think that if we had no communication methods or the environmental controls were out of whack, then things would be even harder." She sat back and rubbed her arms gently. The manufactured air in the ship had always felt odd to her. "Are you all right, Mary?" she asked a moment later, concerned.

"I'm... nervous," she admitted. "I do not like the idea of being trapped in here." Sometimes just being on the ship in general made her nervous. Even though it was a huge space, she still felt trapped sometimes, as she was unable to go outside. The holodeck helped a little bit, because at least she could pretend that she was outside.

"I've been stuck in worse places than this," Peggy said, trying to find something to help Mary relax. Honestly, Peggy might be more relaxed herself if she were stuck here alone, but as she wasn't, she felt that she had to keep her own cool to help with the other woman. "At least it's warm. I was stuck in a bunker in Russia during the dead of winter once."

Mary made a face. "Russia in winter sounds dreadful." She gave the other woman a lot of credit for being a soldier. There was no way that Mary would have cut it, even as a nurse.

"Are the Russians still trying their grand communism experiment?" Whatever Mary knew about that was because of Tom, though Tom said that he was a socialist, not a communist. Apparently there were subtle differences.

Peggy shook her head. "I'm sure Russia will always be trying to succeed with socialism," she said, "but with the end of this last war, I think they'll be quiet for a while. It might not be a bad idea to look back over American history though, in the last few centuries, to see where that all ended up."

She nodded slightly. "Perhaps you're right and I ought to do some reading, though part of me wishes that I could remain ignorant."

Learning that there was another war about 15 years in her future was upsetting because she had no doubt that her son would be fighting in it. She couldn't bear the idea of sending him off and seeing him return in the state that Matthew had.

"Ignorance isn't a bad idea when you're this far in the future," Peggy agreed, though she was the type to want to know everything that was going on around her. Perhaps not directly to her, as she hadn't sought out all that much information about herself and her own future outside of what some people had already volunteered, but knowing and understanding history often was beneficial.

"I normally don't wish to be ignorant," Mary replied. She was quiet for a moment, pushing some papers around her desk before she looked up at Peggy again. "Your war... it frightens me for my son."

It hadn't occurred to Peggy to consider the time frame, that Mary's son would be of an age that he would probably, if they shared a world, have fought alongside Peggy. "I'm sorry," she said quietly. "I didn't even think about that. How old is he now?" she askd.

"Three," Mary replied. "It will put him right in the middle of it." And she knew her son would be like his father - wanting to go to war and do his duty for his country. It was the honorable thing, but as a mother it made her a nervous wreck. Mary shook her head slightly. "It is still not for many years." And depending on how long she stayed on the Enterprise, she might never see him again anyway. That thought didn't do much to cheer her up.

Peggy frowned. It was hard to think about things like this, she knew, about what maybes and the what ifs and that. She considered herself thankful that she didn't have that many attachments back home (at least ones that she was concerned about, or missing badly) to worry her here. "I'm sorry," she said softly.

Mary nodded. "Quite alright. We soldier on the best we can." She didn't want to cry here in this office, not over George and not over being stuck in a room.

She clapped her hands together. "Well. Do you think there is any alternative way out of this or do you propose that we wait for an all clear?" Mary preferred being proactive, though she wasn't sure if it was safe outside either.

Yes, Peggy agreed, for they were British and soldiering on in the face of death and destruction and abject horror was exactly what they did best.

"I was planning to wait for the all clear from the crew," Peggy answered. "I'm not sure how else we're meant to get out of here."
