Meeting the Mother-In-Law (Han and Padme)
WHO: Han and Padme
WHEN: 226405.7
WHERE: The lounge where they agreed to meet
SUMMARY: Han meets Padme for the first time in person
WARNINGS: There shouldn't be any

Han couldn't help being nervous as he waited for Padme to arrive at the place where they'd agreed a few days ago to meet. He'd been happy to give her the time to talk to Leia and whoever else she needed to and to get settled in before doing this meeting. He tried telling himself that he didn't need to be afraid, but knowing she'd been a queen and being unable to escape the fact that he was just a nobody smuggler didn't exactly make him feel the best about it.

He was doing his best not to let out that he wasn't always doing legal things for a living, that was why he'd said he was a cargo pilot. It wasn't entirely untrue, it just wasn't always legal things he'd been running. Nowdays, he was more respectable, but still worked at times with the smugglers' guild when he wasn't busy with Leia and the kids.

Vader was also on his mind. He didn't know anything at all about what had happened back then. Would Vader try to harm her? What kind of guy had Vader been before he'd needed the suit, when he'd presumably gotten Padme to fall in love with him? There had to be more to him than just the homicidal monster he, Luke and Leia had met, although Han was mostly just worried about the Sith's current state of mind these days. It might be wise to warn her while they were talking.

He just hoped that, by the time it was over, she'd see that there was more to him than the brash, cocky attitude he usually projected and that she'd recognize whatever it was that had made Leia fall for him, even though she had pretty much hated him in the beginning. That she'd see that he was ok, even if he wasn't some high and mighty aristocrat.

Padmè recognized that Han Solo was a man who didn't necessarily come from an intergalactic noble family, or any of the other variations of occupations that would have placed him in 'high society'. That didn't really bother her, though she was curious as to how he and Leia ended up together. Though the two of them had talked for hours, the subject of Han was somewhat sketchy. Leia was still getting over the loss of her husband, and Padmè hadn't wanted to dig into fresh wounds.

Hearing his side of the story would be entertaining, too, she thought. And though her conversation with 'Darth Vader' earlier had been sobering, she was in high spirits when she went to meet her Son-in-Law. She dressed in something that wasn't too fancy and let her hair down, so as not to seem intimidating.

"Captain Solo... It's so good to finally meet you in person."

Han's connection to any power at all was up for debate, aside from Leia of course. His cousin *was* the ruler of Corellia, but that wasn't anything he'd be eager to boast about if she were to ask. Thrackan was a power-hungry bully who only cared about himself and who hated him.

He had made an effort to at least look presentable before coming up here, even though he was never one to enjoy getting dressed up. Leia always had to coax and cajole him into it. He was glad to see Padme was trying not to look too intimating in the way she dressed, and it did relax him slightly more.

He offered a smile. "It's good to meet you in person, too." he replied. "And I'm glad you've got the chance to meet so many of the family." He was saddened that 'his' Leia and Luke weren't there, but there was the hope they'd show up later, and still get the chance to meet her. He knew they'd both wondered a long time about who their birth mother was.

"I hope you've managed to settle in all right." he added, knowing she'd taken a few days to talk to some of the others and do just that.

She shared his smile, her whole face lighting up. "You must be so proud of the people your children have become. It has been wonderful getting to speak to them, and I hope I get the chance to help little Ani plan his wedding. But you must feel so out of place without... I suppose the Leia that's yours."

Padmé ducked her head a little, her smile saddening just slightly, "I may understand that, just slightly. Darth Vader will never be the Anakin I fell in love with. And while he is here, I feel as if it's hard to hold onto the hope that my own Anakin will ever make an appearance.

"But... that isn't a topic for happy conversation, I suppose. Though... that development aside, I think I've settled in well enough. Are you reconnecting with your children? How is your piloting going?"

"Yeah...I definitely am." he replied. "It's been rough at times...they've too often become targets...I imagine you can understand that, considering your job. But, somehow, we've all made it through."

He nodded. "I do, yes." he said. "I'm glad I can be there for this Leia, but I do miss the one I know. I keep hoping she'll show up, too. And maybe 'our' Luke and his wife, too.

He listened, his expression taking on a bit of sadness as she talked about her Anakin and her situation. "I'm sorry...It was said he's redeemed, but when we talked...yeah, he did still sound kind of dark." Han sighed. "I can't stop thinking of what he did to us...he says he isn't intending on hurting anyone, but my guard's still up."

He didn't keep pushing, knowing she probably wanted to move on to happier times, as she said. "We're getting there. It's still a lot to take in, with them suddenly being older. They were still little when I saw them last. Now, I keep wondering what all's gone on in their lives....how much they can't tell me because it would hit me too hard. I hope things have been good, but it's not always easy to tell."

"It may be that the Light is pushing back the Darkness, only slowly. But we would all be foolish not to treat him with caution, I agree." Padmé said, nodding her head and deciding to put that topic behind her.

"I can tell when I look at Leia that she's been through so much. She did try to catch me up on everything that she could, but her life wasn't easy at all, and sometimes I have no idea what to say. She was just a baby when I last saw her. Time went on, but it isn't as if I lived through any of it. Sometimes I catch myself daydreaming of a better time. One where Ani doesn't fall, and the Republic is stable, and our children get to grow up with us." She admitted, giving Han a bit of a sheepish smile. "I know there's no use in wondering about could have been. But it is a shock, I know. To see your children so much older than you left them."

"I think I am glad that Leia chose to tell me the hard truths straight away. If you think they're holding something back, you might ask them not to spare you. I have no idea if that will work, though."

Han nodded. "I don't know much about it, but I guess it might not be something instant." he said. He really wished Luke were here, he might have more insight. Maybe he'd try talking to the alternate Luke...that might be helpful.

"Then you know some of it. I figure at least up until we got rid of the Death Star its probably the same." In one way, he was glad it diverged then. Telling his mother-in-law that he kidnapped her daughter to get her to marry him probably wouldn't go over in the best way. "The memories are still too clear, even now, but I don't let it get to me too much. Him showing up just didn't help."

"That kind of thing is so hard to think about. I mean...I'd love to have spared her going through so much...but then I wonder where I'd have wound up without her." he said. Dead, possibly, with Jabba constantly after him.

"I don't know...I'll tell them to tell me whatever they think I can handle." he said.

"It's still been rough sometimes, even now. Too many beings wanting to kidnap the kids for their own means. Being high profile can be a total pain sometimes. I wish we hadn't missed so many early moments of their lives. I can kind of understand a little of what you're saying, I think."

"I think I can understand, too. The idea that you met during a difficult situation, anyway. I don't have to wonder where I would be without Anakin. Our planet would have been destroyed by war if he hadn't been with us on Naboo, and there was..." She trailed off and ducked her head a bit, "The time he saved my life, and the other time he saved it, and that other time... and then of course, I was never going to love anyone else quite the same."

"So I could wish he'd had a better life, or that I'd lived something a little less high profile myself, or that we all could have been happy together. But then I'd be alone, and he would a proper Jedi, and it's like wishing for the bad things to happen so that you can have the good things that happened, too. Then you feel guilty for wishing ill of the Galaxy." Padmé mused, clasping her hands together on her lap.

"And those events caused the ones that give the rest of you so much pain. There is that, too." She added, frowning. Then she shook her head, "There is no point dwelling on it, I guess. Can you tell me about what happened when the timelines diverged?"

Han nodded. "I guess history is what it is...all we can do is try to make the next part of it as good as we can." he said.

"There were imperial remnants fighting for power." he said. "The biggest problem was Grand Admiral Thrawn. He really had the New Republic in a bad spot. Somehow, we won though. Jacen and Jaina were born pretty much as it was all happening." he said.

"Palpatine wasn't gone for good either...he had clone bodies hidden away. SOme kind of Sith thing. Luke thought he could figure out how to beat the dark side from inside...but he almost got sucked in for real. And Palpatine's clone bodies weren't working...he wanted our Anakin. Leia pulled Luke back from the darkness, and we all had to fight back. Luke had him distracted, but I can honestly say I took him out. No way was I letting him anywhere near my wife and son."

Now, Luke's rebuilding the Order...he did have to fight an old Sith spirit, but that kid never gives up. He's been close to dying more times than I care to remember, but somehow, he comes through. We all do."

Now that sounded like something that the Emperor would do, though Padmé wasn't as well versed as the Jedi Order was when it came to the origin of the clones. But they did have access to cloning facilities, and Palpatine had been keenly interested in diverting more and more funds to Kamino.

She remembered, too, that he'd had them specially made to betray the Jedi. Her own memory of some of those events was foggy but Ahsoka had brought her up to date. "It seems that in either timeline, Palpatine was a mastermind. Preparing so long in advance, manipulating events to his favor. Even I fell for it. He's from Naboo, did you know that? Senator Palpatine was a mentor to me in my early days. It was only towards the end of the Clone Wars, just before my death, that I realised how poisonous his politics were."

And then there was all of the things that Luke had been through, which made her brow pucker with worry. Though that Luke was far away from there, and there was nothing she could have done. "You all really did go through it, didn't you? Is there ever a time when our family gets any peace? Do you and Leia and Luke get a moment to catch your breath? And... I am sorry I'm firing so many questions at you, it's just that there's so much to talk about."

Padmé wanted to know everything, even though it all still seemed overwhelming. At the moment there were so many questions still sitting on the tip of her tongue that she almost had to bite it to stop herself from continuing to ask them.

"Yeah, that sounds like him." Han nodded. "I guess no one caught onto him until it was too late."

"Sometimes I wonder" he said with a sigh. "Sometimes we do get a break, though. Just not very often. Even Luke's wedding got interrupted by unhappy imperials. But, we manage to get peace once in a while. We just have to enjoy it while we can."

"Leia would argue with me over not being a Skywalker - I know that she has very legitimate issues with the idea. But when you talk to me about how chaotic your lives end up, it makes me think about how related to Ani they both are. It made her wince, but I find I can't help it. I knew him when he was only a man, a Jedi. Not... what he's become." Padme said, letting out another sigh. And then they'd named a son after him, which was like asking for trouble. But in all the good ways.

"I think that's true. Did you and Leia at least get a few good moments with the twins before everything fell apart again?"

Han nodded. "It took my Leia a while to come to terms with it as well. I think it's mostly making peace...she can't forget, and I don't expect her to, and forgiving isn't always the easiest either. But, she's accepted it and moved on. And...I guess sometimes that's the best way to handle something like that...remember the man you loved and the way he was before things went bad."

He nodded. "Yeah, there were a few, in amongst kidnap attempts and having to let Leia's friend Winter take care of them while we were busy saving the galaxy."

"I want to, but I think it's fair to say that I also have to keep those memories in the past, where they belong. Even if there's something still human inside of him, the Ani I loved is long gone." But she wasn't sure that she knew how to do that, even though Padmé was certain that that line of thinking was the best for everyone.

"And they're all Force Sensitive, aren't they? That must have been quite the challenge. Twins, wreaking havoc with the Force. This 'Winter' must have been at her wit's end."

"Yeah...yeah, sometimes it only makes it worse to dwell. I'm sorry for you, though."

Han laughed. "Yes....all three. Believe me, it was a lot to handle. And yeah, they did drive her nuts sometimes. Luke is pretty good with them, naturally, although I'm a little surprised Mara warmed up to them. She's a woman who's only had to deal with herself for quite a while. But then, they're a little older now, so that helps.

I think it was hardest for Leia, though...there's some kind of parent bond, and if one of them gets hurt, she feels it. It's tough on her sometimes."

Padmé smiled, though it was a sad smile. "It is alright. As many planets as there are in this galaxy and more - that's how many hearts were broken, or lives destroyed by that war. Anakin and I were never meant to have a happy ending. But I think that when you look forward, to you and Leia, and your children? That is the happiest ending we could have had."

And she meant that. Even if the years had sounded incredibly trying at times. "When I was... dying, I actually felt Anakin's pain momentarily. I'm sorry that she has to feel something like that at all, but I have a feeling that with the trouble yours get up to, it's something she feels more often than not."

"Yeah...yeah, that's a good way to do it. I'm glad you're able to be here and see us all." he replied, his gaze sympathetic. I'm still kind of hoping the others will show up...then you'll have seen everyone. But even this is good."

"I'm sorry." he said. "And yeah, I get that feeling, too. I end up feeling bad that there's not much I can do to help beyond just being there for all of them. I mean, I do what I can, but most of the time, I feel over my head with the Force stuff. I'm just glad Luke's there for them."

"I'll take whatever I can get, it is all of it a precious gift. I think it's possible that I am the one getting the most benefit out of this odd situation we're all finding ourselves in. And yes - I am glad that Luke is there for them. But I have no doubt you're doing your best, Han. You seem like a caring man, and I think you must have made a good father." Padme said, giving him an adoring smile.

She reached out and patted his hand, "Each of us can only do what we are equipped to do. You're trying your best. Even in this place."

"All I gotta say is, I've come a long way..." he replied. She'd probably have got a very different opinion of him if they'd met before that trip to Tattooine.

He smiled back, glad the meeting had gone better than some beings could say about meeting the mother-in-law. "Glad you think so. I guess maybe it's just getting past the first impression. Ya kinda have to crack through the outside to figure out who I really am. And I'm glad to have met you. I was a little nervous at first, but I'm definitely gettin' to like you."

"That's all we can do, I agree." he nodded. It did make him wonder if perhaps Bail would ever show up. Leia would like that, no matter which timeline she was from.

"Perhaps we are all lucky that our first impressions happened over text on the logs instead of in person. It helped me to form a good opinion of you from the start." Padmé said, smiling at Han adoringly.

"And I was always well trained at looking through those cracks to see the person on the inside. Whatever else there is about you, I believe that you truly love my daughter and would do anything to look out for her. That's the best thing anyone can ask for, I think."

She rose to her feet, then, and grinned at him. "It was wonderful meeting you, Han. I hope we'll talk again."

"Yeah, maybe it did work out better that way." he nodded, smiling back. It could be tough figuring out tone of voice and interpretation via the text system, but at the same time, there was less looking at the person behind the text and judging based on appearances.

"I think so, too. It's odd, though...somehow, things seem to have gone very differently in Leia's world...at least from what she told me. I just keep wondering how things turned out so different. And I feel bad that she's been through so much pain over the years...I mean, we've had our share, but at least we had a few times to be happy now and then. It doesn't seem much like that for her."

"It was nice meeting you." he replied, a lot less nervous now. "I'd like to talk again soon, it'd be nice."
