Mary glanced at the half eaten pop in her hand and then back up at Tony. "It is... hard to describe," she replied. "Sweet, and maybe a slight melon taste... but a cinnamon aftertaste." It wasn't necessarily bad, just weird.

"How do you do, Mr...." Mary squinted at his name tag. "You Know Who I Am." She smirked slightly at him and cocked an eyebrow.

Tony looked down at his name tag and then back at the Lady, grinning sheepishly. "I just don't like name tags. But we've chatted a bit already on the computer, you were talking about what an adjustment this all is. I'm Tony. And Sweet Melon with Cinnamon does sound... interesting."

Definitely not what he would have expected either. "If that's what we have to look forward to, I'm seriously rethinking grabbing this green one."

"Yes, I do recognize you," Mary said. "Exactly how are people supposed to know who you are?" And he hadn't told her his last name. It was weird, people not introducing themselves with their full names. Apparently people in the future were very informal.

Mary eyed the green pop in his hand. "Perhaps you will be pleasantly surprised and it will be lime."

"This is going to sound like tooting my own horn, which I tend to do a lot but probably polite company like you won't be that impressed," Tony said, still eyeing the green cake pop. Maybe it WOULD be lime. He somehow doubted it.

"But where I come from, I'm kind of world renowned, though whether that's a good thing or a bad thing depends on your perspective. So usually when I go to parties there, people already know who I am." He turned his attention back to Mary, "I guess I have to adapt, too. It's kind of strange, no one knowing who you are. Well, a few people here do. But... yeah."

Mary listened to him, knowing that feeling at least a little bit. She was known in the small town she was from; the Earl's eldest and most beautiful daughter, the one who was perfectly poised, but who didn't seem to smile much. That was what she was known for. Her sphere of influence was small, but within it she was a queen.

"What is it that you are known for?"

She was definitely beautiful and poised. Tony bet there was a lot more going on underneath that veneer, though. "Well... I was a kid genius, and then I took over my dear old dad's weapon company at 21, which was pretty young to be a CEO. Stark Industries was already a pretty well known name thanks to him, but I took it further. Then I became a super hero."

His face wrinkled up a bit, like he was deep in thought, and then he said, "But that's enough about me. 'Lady' Crawley, that has to be a big deal where you're from, right? Titles and nobility or something?"

And he was confident. Cocky, maybe. At least men like that did not intimidate her. "Millionaire genius super hero... you sound like Howard Hughes."

She smiled and shook her head slightly. "I am the daughter of an Earl, though that does not pull as much weight as a Duchess." She liked the flattery though.

"That kind of sounds like you had to contend with a Duchess at one point." Tony squinted at her for a moment, as if he could read the answer somewhere in Mary's expression. He couldn't. That intrigued him.

"Daughter of an Earl is still something, though, isn't it? You British take your titles and land and responsibilities very seriously. Noble Society can be pretty deadly to navigate." As to whether or not Tony was anything like Howard Hughes... well, he decided to take the comparison as a compliment.

Mary shook her head. "Not directly, no. A baroness once, but they cannot stack up to an Earl's daughter. We disagreed about a gentleman. Oddly enough, his name was Tony as well." The man she had slept with, who wanted to marry her, but whom Mary had ultimately turned down. He'd gone back to Mabel, who Mary knew was in love with him. She liked to think she had done that out of some goodness in her heart, but if she had wanted Tony she would have had him without giving a thought to Mabel - who was a nasty twit anyway.

"But, yes, there are responsibilities," Mary continued. "At home I help organize the farms on my family's estate."

That admission impressed Tony, and it showed as his brows raised. "I don't think anyone at all would stack up against you, to be honest. Anyone who tries to match wits with you is probably going to regret it. And I... admit I thought that noble ladies back then mainly had to deal with staff management, social propriety, and perfectly manicured haircuts."

He tilted his head to the side, "That couldn't have been easy. Not the job - you seem like someone who tackles any challenge they pursue. But you know, other people letting you do it. If everything I know about the early 20's is correct, anyway."

Mary defied expectation, and Tony liked that. He could respect it. And he always liked people who spoke their mind.

"You flatter me," she said, though the smile on her face indicated that she enjoyed it. "Many people in my time share your thought about noble ladies. I always found that stuff a bit boring though. Well, not the haircuts." Her hair was bobbed just under the chin. "I could say that I inherited the position of estate agent after my husband passed and someone needed to do the job."

And nobody really doubted that she could do it either. While not having much formal education, Mary was clever and she had a head for numbers. She had always been opinionated and bold. As far as she was concerned, she had been perfect for the job. Nobody cared more than her about preserving Downton and keeping it in the family.

Tony made a gesture with his hand, like he was tossing away her remarks about flattering her. "Just telling the truth. I'm a big fan of transparency, I don't actually like playing a lot of those... I guess we'd call them social word games. But uhm. My condolences about your husband."

There was no way of knowing how long ago all of that had been or if the wound was still fresh, and Tony was notoriously bad and awkward at the range of emotions involved. But offering condolences seemed appropriate. "I don't necessarily agree with how people thought about noble ladies or ladies at all back then, though. I'm glad you were there to prove them wrong."

"I'm tired of games myself." When she was younger, before she had met Matthew, such games were fun. Now she had no use for them. She would much rather be straightforward with them, particularly men. "Thank you," she said of his condolences. It had been a few years since Matthew had died, and while she would never be entirely over it, she had accepted and moved on from his death.

Mary liked Tony, and not only because he was complimenting her. They seemed to be on the same page. "I think in my time people are just learning what women are capable of."

Tony nodded his head. "To be honest even where I come from we're still learning this. And it's probably saying something that it's been that many years and women are still fighting in the trenches. But I work with a pair of girls - worked with a pair of girls - that were perfectly capable of putting me in my place at any given moment."

And he'd learned a thing or two about being sexist, himself, in the process. "I once watched my girlfriend save my own life and then kick a bad guy's butt. I never really occurred to me before then that I'd taken her or her skills for granted. I mean, I made her my CEO. Learned a few things that day. Like how you can't put anyone into one neat box in your head."

"I've had experiences like that as well," she said. "Ones where someone does something unsuspecting and it changes your view of them."

Mary took another bite of her cake pop, chewing thoughtfully. "The flavor grows on you, I suppose."

"I"m not really sure I want to try it." Tony gave the remains of the orange cake pop a dubious look, then looked back at his green one.

If she was taking a bite, he figured he could, too. His face wrinkled a bit as the flavor hit is tongue, and it wasn't clear if he enjoyed the flavor or not until he said, "Definitely not lime. Sour, and kind of... apple? Apple like. With a side of coconut."
