WHO: Mary and Lucifer
WHEN: 226404.28
WHERE: D-Corridor
SUMMARY: They finally talk face to face.
WARNINGS: None yet.

Lucifer decided he'd avoided Mary long enough. After working things out with Hawke, and then talking to Beckett, he knew he couldn't let things sit unsettled indefinitely. He was even annoying himself at this point.

He stopped by Mary's room, knocked, and got no answer. So he did what any stubborn bastard would do, and took a seat on the floor against the opposite floor. And waited.

Mary was of the opinion that things were just going to be unsettled, whether she liked it or not. The truth was that she didn't. But if Lucifer couldn't at least acknowledge why she was upset, then she didn't see any hope for reconciliation. It was unfortunate. She would miss him and their friendship. But she would go on.

She returned for her liaison shift to find Lucifer sitting across from her door. Taking a deep breath, Mary went up to the entrance and put in the code so that it would open.

"Are you looking for Jadzia?"

"No, I've been waiting for you," Lucifer said, standing up. "May I come in?"

"Me?" Mary asked over her shoulder. "Alright then."

She let him in and gestured to one of the couches in the common area. "Have a seat if you'd like." Mary herself sat across from him, putting a good distance between them. Every defense shield was up, though her face remained impassive.

Lucifer followed Mary into her room, and took a seat. He studied her for a moment, still frustrated that they'd gotten to this point in the first place.

"Look, I know that this was new to you. I obviously thought you could handle it, as you were the one who showed up at my room, otherwise I wouldn't have actually slept with you. And it was a brilliant night, Mary. But I've regretted it ever since because I don't want to sit here and discuss a night of fun, meaningless sex. That makes it decidedly less fun and meaningless."

Mary exhaled slowly. She was glad that he was here in her presence. Maybe in person this talk would finally go better.

"It was a mistake. I shouldn't have given in to my impulses. I was only thinking about physical satisfaction and not the consequences of it." And it had been very physically satisfying. She was sure that he'd been able to tell. "But, you see, what I didn't realize, is that it never could have been completely meaningless because I care about you, Lucifer. You are - were - my friend. But you seemed... so cold, after. I suppose I didn't realize what I was getting into."

She took another deep breath, preparing to do something that she hardly ever did. "I'm sorry if I've made you feel uncomfortable. I didn't want that at all."

"We were good when you left my room," Lucifer pointed out. "So I'm not sure where you got it into your head that I was cold." He was starting to think most of her concerns really were in her head. It wasn't as if he'd kicked her out after, or done anything differently afterward, other than he'd gotten annoyed when she kept seeking reassurance when he didn't see why she would need it. And he'd relent on that if they could just finally be over it.

That certainly could be her sometimes. While Mary was generally confident, she had her moments of insecurity. Casual sex with a friend was uncharted territory for her, and she didn't know what to make of it.

"I'm sorry if I interpreted it that way. I suppose I was feeling guilty too." Things seemed different in the light of day. Not only had she slept with a man she considered her friend, she had slept with the devil. The reality of that had struck her hard.

"I should like to be friends with you again, if you think that is possible."

"I think it's entirely possible that we can be friends again," Lucifer replied. "I think we should leave our night together here though, never to be mentioned again. And go back to normal? I've missed that too, you know."

"Yes," she said, finally smiling. "I agree. I'm afraid to admit that I've been rather miserable without you."

Mary had gotten by, and she would have regardless, but she would much rather go through her journey here on the ship with Lucifer as her friend than having things be awkward and having to avoid him.

"Good," Lucifer replied, relaxing. It was a huge relief, seeing her smile at him. Almost like a weight had been lifted off his shoulders that he wasn't fully aware of until it was gone.

He stood. "I'll see you soon then?"

He didn't want to overstay his welcome now, and he figured things would be more normal the next time they saw each other.

Mary stood with him in order to see him to the door. "Yes. I'm having a tea party on Monday afternoon in the Downton simulation on the holo deck. Everyone is invited, so I hope that you'll come." A social gathering like that might be a nice, low pressure way for them to start again.

A tea party sounded quite boring, but Lucifer knew better than to say that. The fact that it was taking place within a simulation of Downton did make it slightly more interesting. "I might," he said noncommittally, before adding with a smirk. "I'm working on getting myself an actual job, here."

"You?" Mary raised an eyebrow. "An actual job? I am intrigued. Do tell me about it the next time we meet."

She was both very curious and slightly wary of whatever he had come up with.

"I have to wait until I see if I can have it," Lucifer replied. But he looked like a kid in a candy store, excited at the prospect.

"Alright, Lady Mary. I'll see you soon."

He left the room feeling like things were more or less resolved, and could return to normal. Which was a relief.
