WHO: Remus Lupin and Sirius Black
WHEN: 226402.22 around 20:00
WHERE: Remus' room, D-27
SUMMARY: An odd reunion
WARNINGS: None as of yet.

Sirius hadn't woken up in the morning expecting to find himself flying through space by that afternoon. All he really knew about stars was that he was named after one and that the astronomy tower had been a fantastic place to take dates. Now there he was, in space. Somehow.

And it appeared Remus was on board as well. He'd looked odd in the photos on his PADD device,
which Sirius had renamed a Paddfoot device because he could. Older maybe, or maybe there were more moons up here that were messing with him, making him look like rubbish. That's what Sirius chalked it up to, and he wondered how his mate was doing as he watched the numbers increase on the doors. They were meant to be attending an Order meeting the next day. Now it seemed they wouldn't be. Everything was so bizarre, Sirius really just wanted to see a familiar face.

D-27. Sirius knocked on the door and waited, wondering if things could get any stranger.

That was a lot of information to take in all at once. "They had a son? I'm his godfather?" Despite everything, he managed a smile at that.

But he wasn't following the conversation. "Yeah... and that makes sense. No one would suspect Peter. Everyone would suspect me or you." But there were four Marauders, Wormtail being the fourth. He just wasn't as loud as the rest of them.

"Harry James Potter, yes. Spitting image of James, but with Lily's eyes."

"The problem was that Peter...none of us ever suspected he'd--he turned on us, Sirius! Turned spy for Voldemort--he knew where James and Lily and Harry were and he sold them out. Voldemort killed James, and he killed Lily..." Remus didn't try to fight the tears as they came. "...and he tried to kill Harry. But he couldn't...because a mother's love was stronger than his hate. Harry came a away with just a small scar, and Voldemort was...seemingly destroyed."

He took a deep breath and looked at Sirius. "But everyone thought you were the only one who knew where they were...but you were the only person alive who knew it was Peter. You tried to avenge James and Lily...but that little shit made sure there was a crowd when you found him. Yelled to the heavens you'd betrayed your friends...and then he faked his own death--made it look like you'd killed him as well as a dozen Muggles..."

He laughed ruefully and rubbed at his eyes. "And we all believed him...and they put you in Azkaban...and I was alone with the pain of thinking my only living friend had killed all the rest..."

Everything about the day was already unbelievable but when Remus said that everyone, himself included, had thought he'd betrayed his best friend?

"I would never ever betray any of you," he said, pacing the room. "I can't believe Peter would either, I mean, I just saw him yesterday! But I would die for any one of you, or Lily, or Harry James Potter and yet everyone somehow thinks I'd turn on them? Bloody hell! I end up in Azkaban? And you thought I deserved to be there?"

He was angry. Furious, really, and there were tears of frustration and some unfathomable sadness for deaths and betrayals that had not yet occurred in his lifetime that he couldn't fully comprehend. "How could you think I would betray them?"

Sirius was tempted to leave. He didn't want to believe a damn word Remus was saying, but the proof was in his friend sitting there, old enough to have lived through it all.

"I have to get back. I have to change this."

"I suppose I believed it because I couldn't have even helped prevent it--there were fears I was or would turn traitor because of how Voldemort was recruiting werewolves. I'd been shunted off to the north country to be out of the way."

He buried his face in his hands for a long moment. "You escaped in the summer of '93," he said softly. "You'd figured out Peter was still alive." Remus raised his head.

"He'd been spending the last several years living as the Weasley children's hand-me-down pet rat. Which is disturbing on several levels but also sort of hilarious. I figured it out, too, much later, after I took our old map off Harry and his friend Ron. Apparently the Weasley twins had had the thing for a few years and somehow never noticed that a 'Peter Pettigrew' was constantly around their brother."

"That's ridiculous," Sirius replied, indignant. "You'd never join him, you have too many people you care about to ever even consider it!"

But then the slightest trace of a smirk appeared on his face. "I escaped Azkaban?" he asked.

All that new information about Peter was still too much to handle. Living as a rat for years? That was disturbing, and it was hard to imagine how all of this took place.

Remus smiled slightly. "You did. First one ever."

He took a deep breath. "Dumbledore gave me the DADA position that year--it was a bit of a rotating door, that post, but I'm glad I was there. With you breaking out, the Ministry decided to continue being incompetent arses and sent Dementors to guard the school."

He shook his head. "Those things were hell on Harry, Sirius, so I started private lessons on the Patronus charm with him. He managed a full one, eventually--sent it after some little shits from Slytherin who thought dressing up as Dementors to throw Harry off his game in Quidditch--he's a Seeker, Harry is--was a grand idea."

Remus decided it was best to wrap up the next bit quickly, just to move things forward. "Eventually, Peter--who'd been named Scabbers for years--got away into the Womping Willow and we all ended up in the Shack, you, me, Harry, his friends Ron and Hermione--such a clever girl, probably helped keep Harry out of as much trouble as she could, and she'd figured out I was a werewolf--but it was good to have you back and know you were innocent. Oh!" Remus clapped his hands together. "And who do you suppose tried to crash our little reunion and chat with Peter? Snape. You'd think he'd have learned his lesson about the Shack--but Harry and his friends stunned him. We made Peter change back into a man, but things got complicated and he got away. You did, too, at least. And I got sacked because Snivellus told all of Slytherin I was a werewolf."

That was a lot to take in, and Sirius merely nodded, trying to take mental notes and follow with a timeline. As best as he could figure, they were almost up to present day give or take a couple years.

"So what are we doing these days?" he asked. "Now that I'm finally free again?"

Remus rubbed his hands down his face. "The Order got back in business--thanks to Peter, Voldemort was able to get a body again. He tried to kill Harry again, and he killed another student. Cedric Diggory, finest Hufflepuff of his age, if you ask me. So much promise..."

He leaned back in the chair. "Of course Fudge--the Minister--didn't want to believe that Voldemort could be back. It was a shit year for all of Hogwarts the next year. For the world, really. There was a mass break out of Death Eaters in January of '96. Travers, Rookwood, Mulciber, Dolohov, a few others..."

Remus paused and took a deep breath. "...and all three Lestranges. Voldemort wanted that prophecy about his defeat stolen from the Department of Mysteries. But only Voldemort or Harry could touch it...so thew lured Harry and some of his friends out there by showing Harry a false vision of Voldemort torturing you."

The story of his life was an interesting one, that much was clear. It unfolded in ways Sirius never would have predicted, and it was clear that none of them knew what they were getting into in the present that Sirius had been living in.

Slightly overwhelmed at the thought that his best mate's son was lured into a trap using a false vision of himself, Sirius asked, "He got it though, right? He got it and they got out of there?"

"There was a battle. Started off with Harry and five of his friends--including Neville Longbottom." Remus paused. "The Lestranges tortured Alice and Frank so badly they'll never leave the Janus Thickey Ward, Sirius. Neville's a good lad, but that's been hard on him."

He took a deep breath and continued. "They did their best, but they were only children. Harry was about to hand it over to save his friends when we showed up. It was you, me, Kingsley, Moody, and Tonks--Nymphadora grew up to be an Auror, you see, and joined the Order. Things were a bit more even, then. And most of the the Death Eater ran or got themselves caught when Dumbledore arrived...:

Remus trailed off, eyes flickering to the floor. "You were dueling Bellatrix..."

There was a long pause after Remus finished. His best friend might have been older but Sirius could still figure out where he was going with that thought.

"Bellatrix, huh? Always hated her. I went down fighting though? Bravely?"

Remus' eyes flickered back to Sirius with a pained look. "In the Department of Mysteries, in the...Death Chamber, there's a Veil. Some sort of...portal between life and death that only goes one way."

He blinked and bit the insides of his cheek for a moment. "I don't know what she hit you with--Stupefy, most likely--but it...it knocked you through the Veil..." The tears started then and he clenched his fists in his lap.

"And Harry--oh Merlin, Harry--he wanted to go after you, he didn't understand that you were d--I had to grab him, hold him so tight to keep him from running through...oh Merlin..."

"So I just fall through a veil?" That seemed less heroic than he'd hoped.

But then Remus started crying and Sirius frowned. This was truly the most bizarre experience of his life, but that worked in this situation. "Come on, Moony," he said. "How many other people can say they traveled through time and into outer space to comfort their best friend after their own death?"

"We couldn't give you a proper funeral."

Somehow, despite the pain, Remus couldn't help but laugh at what Sirius said. He half-launched himself at Sirius and wrapped his arms around him tight. Because this was Sirius, even if he was younger, and he was alive. And that was more than Remus had ever expected.

Awkward as the situation was, Remus was always going to be one of his best friends, even if this particular version of him was older and full of terrible news. So Sirius hugged him back, figuring he'd have time to process everything later on.

They were trapped on a spaceship now, after all.
