WHO: Harley Quinn and OTA
WHEN: Sunday night
WHERE: the Lounge
WHAT: Harley's workin' hard
WARNINGS: tbd
STATUS: incomplete

______________

Harley was working hard, or hardly working. The bar was empty for the most part, as everyone had got their drinking out the night before. She wiped down a counter four times before she realized she was doing it.

Like a cat, she gently nudged at a glass set too close to the edge of the counter. She nudged it again until it fell off the side, and broke into several pieces. She cheered and jumped up and down with it shattered, and went to get a broom.

She spotted another glass and started to nudge it with the broom. She didn't notice someone had heard the crash and came to investigate.

"Do you always break glasses on purpose?" Aloy asked, leaning against the bar with both of her eyebrows disappearing into fiery hair. She was still trying to get used to this ship, and the crew. This woman was certainly eccentric. She kind of reminded her of a few people she'd met in Meridian.

"I like the sound it makes," she said with a shrug. It was true, the sound of the breaking glass really pleased her.

"You wanna do one? This one's ready to go," she said, pointing at it with the broom.

"It's a nice sound," Aloy agreed. Maybe not as nice as the sound of metal bits and pieces knocking together, but still nice.

"..Really?" Aloy touched a hand to the device over her right ear, then tilted her head as she seemed to read or hear something. She decided to show off, stamping her foot at just the right distance and angle to make the vibration knock the glass off the bar and shatter it on the floor.

She couldn't help it, she giggled.

"What was that??" Harley hopped up on the counter and leaned towards Aloy, studying her. "What'd you just do?"

She was incredibly interested, not at all freaked out.

"I uh...scanned it." Aloy pointed at the floor. "There's a metal plate under the carpet. If you hit it right, it sends vibrations to the bar. Vibrations knock the glass off. Easy."

"How'd you scan it?" Harley was tilting her head back and forth like a confused dog. "What'd you do?"

She grabbed her broom and swung her legs over the bar, hopping down to begin sweeping up the remains of those poor glasses.

Aloy pulled something off of her ear and held it up. It was a small, triangular device that had previously looked like some kind of odd jewellry. "It's called a Focus. It can.. I guess analyze stuff. It helps me with languages too, and reading. Not many people where I'm from can read the old glyphs. It was really useful for tracking and hunting."

Harley's eyes got big. "It's pretty."

She went back to sweeping, until all the glass was in a pile. Part of her wanted to step on it and smash it some more, but she decided that might be dangerous. "So you did a lot of hunting?"

"Thanks. I guess it is." She put it back, and it kind of snapped to her head like it was drawn by a field as she took a seat.

"Yeah. I hunted machines. They were kind of alive. It's hard to explain."

Harley didn't notice. She was still pondering the glass. "It is! And machines are kind of alive. Unless you mean robots? Did you hunt robots?"

"Yeah, I kind of hunt robots." They weren't quite like the Faro robots that destroyed the world, but they were close enough. "I can ride them too. No one else can, I figured out how. They're kind of like..."

Aloy searched for the words. "They look like animals I guess. I think one was like a bull. And there were big cat-like ones. Sabertooth I think the ship's computer said, when I described it."

She spread her hands out. "The biggest one was the Thunderjaw. It walked on two legs and was as big as a building."

Harley stopped pondering to listen, putting her elbow on the table. "Really? As big as a building? Thunderjaw? Sounds like a Transformer or something. You probably don't know that show, it's from the '80s"

"Hmm...which 80s? The world ended in 2065, and I was born about a thousand years later." She didn't know what a transformer was, so she looked around. Grabbing a bowl of peanuts, Aloy started to use them to make the shape of a Thunderjaw.

Basically, a mechanical T-Rex.

"1980's?" Harley offered. She leaned over and watched as the thunderjaw came to life.. "2065? Bummer."

"Robots killed everything." For some reason, it was easy for Aloy to talk about. As awful as it had been to learn the truth, she was alive. People were alive. Her mother had found a way for people to come back.

"Then a machine called Gaia was used to hatch humans again when the robots were shut down. This Thunderjaw had a purpose, to clean the air and the land. Gaia liked extinct animals."

She paused, then added. "Really hard to fight, though."

"I imagine. Didja have guns or anything?" Hatching humans? Harley tried not to flip out at the story. Weirdness was abound this place. Though, this might just be the weirdest thing she'd heard so far.

"Sometimes? Some of the machines I fought, the really, really old ones, had guns. I could blow them off and use them against them. But my best weapon was my bow. I could make arrows that exploded in fire, and a kind of sonic arrow that shatters armor." Aloy had been particularly fond of the latter, especially since it was the best way to blow a disc launcher off of a Thunderjaw. "I really like those ones. I also got really good with a trap launcher."

Hatching was probably a bad word for it, since it involved incubators and not actual eggs.

"I used a baseball bat, I called it Good Night-- and my gun." The gun J specially had made for her. She almost shuddered, thinking about him.

"I fought monsters a sorceress brought to life. Except, I think they were alive the whole time-- but I could imagine using a bow and arrow. Maybe you can show me sometime?"

"Good night, I like that." Aloy didn't know what baseball was, but she got the idea of a bat. She also got the idea that the gun bothered Harley, but could't quite figure out why.

She perked up at the idea of showing Harley what she could do. "I think I'd like that. It might be fun."

"You'll have to show me next time we land." Harley decided she needed a dustpan. "Thanks for showing me your fancy stuff, I hope we don't go to a planet where there's any Thunderjaws. But if we do, I'm hiding behind you."

She turned and went behind the bar. "I'm going to clean up the mess... it was nice talkin' to ya."

"Maybe we could try that holodeck thing..." Aloy wasn't sure how it would work, she wouldn't want to actually break the ship. "It was nice talking to you too. Sure you don't want some help?"

"Nah, I get paid for this. Don't do things for free, Aloy." She waggled her finger at the other woman.

That was a lesson Aloy actually understood. Even if she disobeyed it sometimes. She couldn't resist a pretty smile or unfortunate soul, after all. She nodded, then left the lounge, fingers itching to pick up her bow.
