He was deep into whatever he was reading when Mary came over, but he beamed a smile up at her as she approached. The cheek smooch was a welcome gesture, one he wasn't sure he was supposed to return. Instead, he put his PADD down on the table so that she'd know she had his full attention.

"I'm good, all good. Are you okay? You looked kind of pensive over there."

Mary sighed as she sat down next to him. "It has been a rather long week," she said by way of explanation.

It crossed her mind to tell Tony about Lucifer, but part of her felt that too many people already knew. Another part thought that he probably wouldn't want to know anyway.

The chemistry between Lucifer and Mary was undeniable and Tony probably wouldn't have been surprised at all to learn that they'd finally slept with each other. At the moment, though, since neither of them had said anything, he was completely oblivious.

Still, he could tell that something was up. "A long week? We were on vacation. I mean, you guys were. I stretched my legs a bit and then went back to the ship because... pub crawl aside I just couldn't deal with the MC Escher Crystal Globe Puzzle of Doom."

"It was almost like being on a real planet though," Mary said. She had liked that, especially the botanical gardens. "I suppose I'm rather tired from being about so much and doing so many things." That wasn't a lie at least. Being at Yorktown was the most active she'd been since awakening on the ship.

Mary debated how much to share with Tony. A man's perspective on it might actually be interesting though. "I don't know if you wish to hear about my personal life, do you?"

"There IS that old saying about needing a vacation from your vacation," Tony mused, nodding his head a bit. There had definitely been a lot to do. He remembered seeing an itinerary at one point but his brain had stopped full on at the idea of dining directly in space.

Then he leaned forward a bit in his seat, and shrugged one of his shoulders, "We're friends, aren't we? Friends share stuff. Even if it's an overshare. I might overshare at you one day, it'll probably happen."

Mary demurred for a moment, looking out into the lounge. Lucifer was noticeably absent. She really hoped that had nothing to do with her.

There was a deep breath before she spoke again. "I slept with Lucifer." Let that sink in before she went on about it.

Come to think of it, Sauron WAS noticeably absent. Tony scanned the room along with Mary, wondering what it was she was looking for. Or not looking for. Of course that was plainly clear after she told him that she'd slept with Lucifer.

His eyebrows rose up a bit, "So that happened. I'm kind of surprised, actually. I mean - I'm not oblivious enough to notice the connection there, we've talked about that before. But I thought he had some circumstances."

That type of surprise seemed to be the general reaction that she got. Mary had cultivated an image for herself here and sleeping with Lucifer had shattered that.

"So did I. He's decided those circumstances do not matter anymore. Or perhaps they still do. I tried to talk with him about our encounter but he wasn't having any of it."

It wasn't really about shattered images from where Tony was sitting. He was only surprised that Lucifer had done it at all, considering his issues with the detective.

And it wasn't a surprise that Lucifer was being tight lipped about it now, either. Tony frowned a bit, "He'd seemed pretty adamant about his detective. I never actually expected him to break down. But... let me guess, he isn't much for pillow talk and everything's been awkward since, right?"

Mary nodded slowly. "Perhaps I should have known better, considering that he is the devil. It was foolish of me to expect that." She sighed and looked at her hands. "The sex was... quite satisfying, though afterwards he only wanted to gloat and resisted any efforts of mine to make sense of what we had just done."

That... sounded like typical male chest pounding, but Tony gathered that an answer like that was not what Mary needed right now. And since she was actually one of the closer friends he had on board this ship, he nodded his head slowly while he tried to think his way around the problem.

"I used to be that guy, I'm sure you know that. Lots of women in my bed, all of them kind of viewed like conquests. One year I managed to bed almost every swimsuit model on the sports illustrated calendar, and I bragged about it." Is what he finally said, while sipping his alcohol. "But you're from a different age where people don't just do this stuff casually. It's why I don't approach you casually. You're a Lady. I get that you'd need to talk about it more."

It was very typical male and she knew that. Mary knew what men were like, especially after managing to bed a woman they had been talking to for ages. She furrowed her brow slightly at the term "swimsuit models", something she hadn't heard before but could surmise what it was.

"You used to be? What changed?"

"Uhh... Lots of things, actually." Tony said, his eyebrows raising up again. He sipped down most of his drink and then set the glass on the table. "I've had more than a few brushes with death, that always puts your life into perspective. Realised I had a woman in my life who was willing to stick around despite how crazy I always made her. We weren't good for eachother, but I still wanted to try."

He leaned back in his chair, continuing the story which he was trying to summarize as well as he could. Without having another panic attack. "And then I came upon a time in my life where a casual lay came back to haunt me. And like - it comes back around. All of these women, maybe some of them just wanted their claim to fame of having slept with me, but I bet some of them were like you. They needed better than what I was willing to give at the time. And I was an asshole back then, and people I loved nearly died for it."

Mary watched him, noting the change on his face and wondering what was going through his mind as he told this story.

"I'm sorry." She sighed. "I truthfully have no idea what I want." Well. She did want the sex. That was for sure. But was it a deflection from wanting a relationship with someone she deemed unattainable or was it simply sex? And did she even want said relationship? Mary had decided that she was ready to move on from her husband's death back home, but she had ended up finding neither of her suitors to be good enough. Maybe nobody was.

"It's alright, hey... This is a you moment, so lets spin the focus back around." He said, lifting his hands up and physically motioning, like he was actually turning a lazy susan or something similar back in her direction.

"So you've got a lot going on in your brain pan. I remember you were just still kind of getting over your husband, and that's a huge thing to deal with all by itself. Then you've got the fact that Sauron is the literal devil. He's pretty enticing, I'm not gonna lie. He's got chemistry with everyone on this ship almost. I think that's... like part of his job description. He'd been trying to lure you into sexual discussions for a while. Maybe you're thinking - here I am, stuck in space. The life I left behind me is behind me. Maybe I seize the moment. See where it goes. Sometimes we do that stuff 'cause we're lonely. Or because we've decided to have a 'you only live once' moment. People make decisions all the time that are rooted in some other thing that we barely talk about. So we need to figure out your roots."

Tony was incredibly good at this. Everything he said made a lot of sense to her, and he was absolutely right.

"I wanted the sex," she said quietly. "I did. It was very satisfying. But I think I would rather have had it with someone who loved me." Even if it had been satisfying in the moment, she had found it rather empty afterwards. Deep down what she really wanted was to be understood and loved.

That made a lot of sense. Tony nodded his head, "Believe it or not I think we all get to the point where we realise that we want more than just that empty feeling you get the next day. And sometimes for us guys we have more feelings than we let on about it, but we don't want to talk about them."

Tony leaned forward again and steepled his fingers together, then glanced at her like he was letting her in on some big secret. Though he knew she was well versed in the way people worked and probably already knew this. "It's like... society expected you to be a certain way, right? All your life you've had to deal with that. Guys are similar. We're supposed to be strong, and stoic, and when you're labeled as the kind of guy who has a reputation for sleeping around, it gets a little hairy. Trying to manage reputation with expectation with whatever's going on in your own head."

Mary nodded as she listened. "It seems like everyone has a role to play, doesn't it? It isn't fair sometimes." She glanced up at him. "We are different people here though, aren't we? Or at least we can be, if we want to."

Someone like her especially, who had nobody from home here with her. She could be anyone that she wanted to and nobody would ever know.

"I'm trying to be a different person, it's not always easy. I've got people here on the ship with me that know things about me that I haven't even lived yet. There's expectations. It's annoying." Tony said, frowning.

Then he looked over at her, and actually reached over to put a hand on hers. That was a huge deal. Tony wasn't much for skin contact outside of the occasional tryst, he didn't even like it when people handed him things.

"But Princess, you can be whoever you want to be. You've literally got nothing holding you back. Here in a modern world where women like Tails have probably six degrees and are in charge of all kinds of stuff. You could learn anything, be anyone. The only thing you can't change is like... the root of you. That you inside there that you don't show to people. So don't force yourself to be okay with this if your deep inside you just isn't."

Mary wasn't touchy either, but she appreciated Tony putting his hand on hers. She pressed her fingers back up against his.

She wasn't sure if all of that was true, being anyone. Mary would still always be herself, the proper lady that her parents had raised. She didn't know if she could ever catch up to women like Jadzia, no matter how clever she was.

Mary reached up with her free hand and subtly wiped at her eye. That was the most crying that she was going to allow herself to do in public. "I think it was a mistake. I think he is trying to forget the detective and now he feels guilty because he loves her. When I talk about it, it just reminds him."

"It might have been a mistake, but you're human. You're gonna make those," Tony said, trying to sound encouraging. He wasn't sure he was cut out for this kind of thing, but he could try.

"It could be. There's usually a few reasons why a guy gets like this afterwards. Sometimes it's because they want to avoid 'clingy virgin syndrome'. That's... a really sexist phrase but yeah. Times like that they just don't want people to get attached or think it meant anything special. Usually though that goes along with deep seated emotional issues having to do with, you know. Vulnerability. And that leads to the second thing, which is usually when they feel too much about it and don't know what the hell to do next."

Tony'd been in both situations at least once in his life. He didn't know which side of that fence Sauron fell on, but it was always possible that it was both.

He was doing a great job. Mary really appreciated his time and effort to make her feel better.

"I'm certainly not a virgin," she said quietly. "Honestly, I think it is more about him than it is about me and I need to accept that. I can understand why a man like him would resent feeling vulnerable."

He was the actual devil. Of course he didn't want to seem weak.

"There's a saying in the more modern world that goes like 'it's not you, it's me'. It kind of gets abused and isn't always used the right way, but this time it could pretty much be that way, yeah." Tony agreed, with a nod.

"Sauron's a friend of mine but the dude's been through figurative and literal hell. You could go at those walls with a siege engine if you wanted to but if he doesn't want to open the door? I don't know. I mean, I can't tell you what's really going on in his head. I wish I could, Princess. It'd be nice to see you smiling again."

She had to pick the most complicated man on the whole ship to have a fling with, didn't she? Only her. Tony had given her a lot of perspective though and helped her think about things that she hadn't previously. Mary was incredibly grateful.

The corner of her mouth curled up in a slight smile. "Thank you. You've been such big help." Mary squeezed his hand.

Tony returned the hand squeeze lightly, and then decided to gently pull away. There were times when hugs and handshakes alike should be abandoned before they got awkward, and he had his own vulnerability to keep watch over.

Not that Mary hadn't already seen through him on that front on more than one occasion. "Sincerely glad I could help."
