WHO: Peggy Carter & Kate Beckett
WHEN: Earlier this week.
WHERE: A bar on Yorktown.
SUMMARY: Drinks & conversation.
WARNINGS: None as of yet.

Peggy was very glad for the opportunity to slip away from her duties and worrying about how all of the travelers were doing and who might come in next. She even left her PADD back on board the Enterprise, trusting in her new recruits to take care of any issues that came up. And then she met Kate Beckett near a bar on the station so that the two of them could find a quiet corner, order a glass of wine, and chat.

Once she had a glass of wine in hand - a sparkling pink wine that the waitress who had taken their drinks orders had recommended when Peggy asked for something both fruity and dry. It was apparently from a planet called Risa, which Peggy had read about in her research but hadn't given much thought to. A pleasure planet or something. She took a sip and smiled across at Kate. "How's Mr. Castle settling in? He seems very - excitable - every time I talk to him."

It wasn't the most dignified reaction, but Kate's snort of amusement was genuine. Excitable was definitely the word to use for her husband and his reaction to life on the Enterprise. Peggy had no way of knowing it, but that was just how Castle lived his life. It was just that being on the ship among so many of his childhood (and adulthood) heroes was a bit overwhelming. "He loves it," she replied, swirling her own glass of wine - Kate had kept to her standard and gone for a bold red - "I don't think a day has passed since he got here where he hasn't had a moment of glee at something or another."

"How are things going with you?" she asked, genuinely interested to hear what Peggy had to say. Not so long ago, it had been just a handful of them on the Enterprise and the two of them had bonded in mutual confusion and, at least on Kate's end, a need not to panic. But as more people had arrived, it became harder to find time to spend together. "I know you've been busy with all the arrivals, but some of them are your friends so that's got to be nice."

Well, by friends she really meant Steve Rogers, but Kate didn't bring him up directly. If Peggy wanted to talk about it, she would.

"It's much better to be filled with glee than filled with dread," Peggy said, thinking of some of the new arrivals and how confused and worried they were. Not that Mr. Castle wasn't rightfully confused as well, but he was handling it differently than some of the others. She thought back to her recent conversation with Peter Parker, where they had talked about how everyone dealt with this all in different ways.

Peggy dabbed at the corner of her mouth with her napkin. "Things are busy, which I'm thankful for. I'd rather be busy than bored every day. It has been nice to see people and names that I know or know of come through, but there are always still complications."

"Jyn Erso." The woman was from the Star Wars universe, not that Kate had said as much to anyone but Castle, but she was obviously struggling with the changes. How many times had she read of the woman's struggles on the PADD? And it was disheartening that she didn't really have any comfort to offer her. "Though I do hope those that are struggling will find it easier in time."

They had both struggled, too. But no one but the crew of the Enterprise had really been around to notice.

Complications. Well, that was one way to put it, Kate thought as she sipped her wine. She considered herself pretty talented at deflecting conversation and only giving the pieces of herself out that she wanted others to know, but Peggy Carter? She was a master at it.

"That's very true," she said with a nod after she had swallowed her wine. "Complicated is exhausting."

Peggy nodded. Yes, she had noticed the same thing about the young woman, though she wondered how much of that had to do with the circumstances that she came from. "I think for some people, it might have to do with where they were before being pulled here as well," she said. "Everyone's come from different situations and periods in their lives." She ran her finger up and down the stem of her wine glass and then took another small sip.

"It's better to focus on the uncomplicated," she said with a shrug.

"Oh, I'd agree with that," Kate said. "Some of them come from places with war and other horrible things, and it's a life that's far more difficult and dangerous than what we have here." Even she had a safer life, given that her day job now didn't involve people shooting at her on a somewhat regular basis. "I suppose in that situation it just seems like a trick or a dream because such a thing can't be possible."

At the mention of things being uncomplicated, she gave Peggy a long, quiet stare and finally shrugged. "Fair enough. What's happening that's uncomplicated for you then?"

"I wouldn't have imagined anything like this was possible no matter what part of my life I came in from," Peggy admitted. "And yet here we are." She sipped her wine and leaned back a bit, relaxing now that she had some wine in her and was away from the ship and all of her worries that went hand in hand there. "Uncomplicated is having more hands in the liaison program. I'm no longer doing everything on my own, and that's a relief."

It was always tricky to know how much she should say to people about her familiarity with portions of this universe. Peggy was from a period that was too early to recognize it, and Kate also knew her universe and world to be fictional which added an extra dimension to the entire thing. The last thing she ever wanted to do was leave someone feeling uncomfortable with her knowledge and, beyond that, the fictional life that she knew them to have led.

"We had some television shows like this," she said, deciding that was a vague enough answer as to not overstep the boundaries Kate had set for herself. "Television and movies and books. Space travel and the future has been a popular story theme for my whole life, so because of that I've been able to imagine some of these things."

But imagining it and living it were two completely different concepts.

"Oh, right," Kate nodded. "Mary Crawley is helping you now, isn't she?"

Peggy sometimes wondered if someone with a better knowledge of all of these fictional universes would be better off heading up the liaison program and integrating people to their new futures here. But at the same time, she thought maybe that would be too overwhelming. "Yes, I read a few science fiction novels," she said. "And yet it was still a little out of my realm of possibilities."

She nodded. "Yes. As are a few others. At least now I can take a break now and again."

"Did you really?" Kate asked, clearly amused and interested to hear about this. "Anything particular?"

Knowing what she did of history, Kate figured it would be about 15 years beyond Peggy's time when the idea of some of the stuff presented in novels could seem possible. The space race, Neil Armstrong walking on the moon, none of that had happened yet - and while Kate had missed that, she did remember the Challenger explosion and how all the adults in her world had been horrified. Of course, being a child, she hadn't understood what it all meant until later.

"They really shouldn't have expected you to take it all on by yourself in the first place," she said, "That's a tough task for anyone."

"Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, the, well, classics, I suppose you could call them." Peggy ran her fingertip along the edge of the table and shook her head slightly. "Books that seemed so foreign and otherworldly. And then I end up here, and this is more otherwordly than anything I've ever read." She smiled.

"Well, no one was doing anything about the new arrivals, were they? And there was no crew assigned the task either. Someone had to step up. I don't mind. It'd rather be busy than not."
