Mary Crawley & B'Elanna Torres

"Oh," Mary said, "you laughed, so I thought that it might be different or something." It was a white rose, which reminded her of home. "Are you... from Earth? If you do not mind me asking that question."

Perhaps it was rude. She did not know. The woman did not seem entirely human.

"I just haven't had much cause to stop and smell a rose lately," B'Elanna explained. "The ship I was on, Voyager, has been traveling in the Delta Quadrant for years now, and something like a Terran rose isn't readily available outside of the holodeck." She let her fingers slip along its petals.

At the question, B'Elanna tipped her head to the side. "I was born on Kessik IV," she said, "but my father's from Earth."

Mary nodded. "I can understand that." She had only been on the ship for about a month and she was already going stir crazy. To be amongst real trees and flowers again was wonderful.

"Oh, I see." She had no idea where that was, of course, but it answered her question at least. "My name is Lady Mary Crawley. I am from 1924, on Earth." That usually gave people an idea of what she was familiar with and what she wasn't.

B'Elanna hadn't studied Earth history in years, so she really had no idea what was going on around 1924 there, but she didn't want to admit to it. "Lieutenant B'Elanna Torres," she said of herself. "2274."

"Nice to meet you, Lieutenant Torres. Is living in the past as odd as it is living in the future?" Her timing wasn't as far off as Mary's, so perhaps she was better suited. Had there been a lot of changes in the years that separated B'Elanna and this time?

"The strangest thing about it is the fact that I'm serving on board the Enterprise," B'Elanna said, "under Captain Kirk. It's legendary, really, the stories we've all learned in the history books. That's where the odd stuff is."

Mary smiled at that. "He's really that important, isn't he?" The way everyone talked about him was doing nothing but making her more curious about him and subsequently a bit more smitten each time.

B'Elanna nodded. "He did a lot," she said. "There was an entire course at the Academy about him and the Enterprise's five-year mission." She hadn't taken it though because by the time it was offered, she was on her way out the door.

"There's a course about him?" Good Lord. Mary wondered if Jim knew about that. "I suppose he is an impressive man then. Surely such a man had an equally important wife."

She was pressing for information, of course. Perhaps he was already taken or knew the woman that he would eventually marry.

"I didn't take it," she said. "But I know a lot of people who did." At the question about having a wife, B'Elanna raised an eyebrow before reminding herself that this woman was from the past, pretty far in the past even, and she didn't know enough about it to be able to make a judgement from one question. "I don't think he ever married," she said, "but like I said, I didn't take the course."

Perhaps that was an odd question for this age, or perhaps Mary wasn't as slick as she thought she was being. Either way, the answer was interesting. She filed that information away.

"Has he found out that there will be a course about him?"

B'Elanna grinned. "I haven't told him so unless someone else has ..."

Mary cocked an eyebrow. "Do you think I ought to?" Or would that just intensify his ego? Admittedly, with all Mary had heard about Kirk, his ego seemed rather well-earned.

B'Elanna shrugged. "If you want to. I'm sure the same thing happens in this timeline as it did in mine."
