WHO: Beckett, Castle and Lucifer
WHEN: 226404.04
WHERE: Out in Yorktown
SUMMARY: Shopping
WARNINGS: Doubtful?

Lucifer was having a fantastic day. He was off the spaceship for one, then they had given him spending money and after all that, he'd found an unregistered card with 1000 credits on it, which he quickly figured out how to register.

It was time to buy some new clothes. The replicator had supplemented his wardrobe but it wasn't the same as being properly fitted. So armed with his newfound wealth, he found himself inside a shop that actually appeared to sell suitable attire. Even better, he recognized two of the shoppers.

"Beckett!" Lucifer greeted Kate cheerfully, before turning to Castle and extending his hand. "And we've not been properly introduced, even if you had no qualms about shooting me repeatedly. I'm Lucifer Morningstar. I've heard a lot about you."

And just like that, Lucifer had inserted himself into Beckett and Castle's day out. He couldn't be considered a third-wheel if he felt absolutely no awkwardness about it.

For a guy who didn't particularly love shopping, Kate had to hand it to her husband, he had been a trooper in the afternoon they had spent going from store to store. It wasn't a secret that she was a bit of a clotheshorse at home and that her collection of shoes and outerwear was a bit extreme considering the size of her closet in the loft, but she was doing her best to approach their afternoon with a bit of practicality and only buying things that she really needed for day to day life on the Enterprise outside of her hours working and wearing one of the Starfleet uniforms.

But Kate Beckett was as susceptible to distraction as the next girl, which was the precise reason she was currently standing near the changing rooms wearing a dress and a pair of heels that made her already long legs look infinite. "Hey, Castle what do you think about ---" The plan had been to tease her husband with the outfit, especially since Kate already knew she would be taking the whole thing back to the starship and didn't exactly need to see Rick's slack-jawed expression when he got a load of the short skirt and the low cut back. But she hadn't gambled on anyone they knew also being in the store and yet here she was, wearing a dress that was far shorter and tighter than anything else she had worn in months with the Devil himself calling her name.

Rolling her eyes at herself, Kate turned towards the other man, giving him a brief wave and a cheeky grin. "You really are stalking me."

Castle didn't love shopping, but he had to admit that the best part of it was to watch Kate try sexy things on. He smiled his approval at the dress, nodding before she even asked the question, when Lucifer was getting their attention.

"Lucifer," Castle said, standing to shake his hand. "I've heard a lot about you as well." Mostly about how he was the actual devil. That was both intriguing and mildly disturbing. "Hey, laser tag is serious business, and I will shoot whomever I have to, but it's nice to finally get to meet you."

"Hey," Lucifer said to Kate, not hiding the fact that he was taking in what she was wearing. "It's hardly my fault that you have excellent taste. I'm here to shop."

Turning his attention back to Castle, he shook the other man's hand firmly. "Yes, well, don't worry that the image of your wife in that particular ensemble won't be leaving my mind anytime soon. She's been a really good friend to me and I have zero interest in messing that up." He flashed Castle a grin. "So you're the famous mystery writer, eh? From day one she wouldn't shut up about you to the point where I feel as though I know you already."

One look at Lucifer was all Kate needed to know she was being ogled. Narrowing her eyes at him, she snapped her fingers in the direction of his face. "Eyes up here, bud."

While she didn't usually mind the attention that looks drew from men, Kate quickly decided that it wasn't really something she wanted happening in front of her husband with a guy that she had spent a lot of time with before his arrival.'"And on that disturbing note, I'm going to go change," she said, shooting another glare at Lucifer on her way to the changing room.

She had just closed the door at his next words, the scoff easily heard through the screen she was changing behind. "That's an exaggeration. Not to mention he kept asking about you, so it was difficult to talk about much else."

Uh, yeah, Castle could do without the ogling. Of course, Kate could more than stand up for herself. He wasn't worried that Kate had been cheating on him in his absence. She wouldn't do that anyway, and she was so thrilled when he arrived that he was sure she would have confessed. Besides, he liked to think that his wife wouldn't sleep with the devil.

He gave an exaggerated sigh at Lucifer's words. "Oh, I'm sure. She's my biggest fan. Kind of obsessed, really."

"I did ask about you," Lucifer admitted. There was a display of men's shirts not too far away so he wandered over to it, nodding approvingly and then checking the price, calculating what he could buy with his newfound wealth. It was nothing compared to what he had been accustomed to, but at the very least it was building on a ridiculously limited wardrobe.

"Which of these?" he asked, holding two rather similar shirts up as he walked back to Castle. Kate was still changing. "So was I right?" he asked loudly enough for her to hear him through the door. "I unofficially had a bet going with her over how you'd react to something."

Of course, that was counting on the fact that she'd told him, but Lucifer couldn't imagine that she hadn't, after months of guilt.

"Obsessed?!?!?" Kate's indignation was clear through the door and she just knew Castle was out there with that pleased little grin that she alternated between wanting to smack him and kiss him for. "I'm not the one that called in a favor to his buddy to stalk a cop for supposed book research. If you're going to call me obsessed then you are just as bad, Castle."

Buttoning up her skinny jeans, Kate pulled her t-shirt over her head and picked up the items she planned to buy, strolling out of the room before she answered Lucifer. "We didn't have a bet. You had a bet with yourself. But he's not mad at me, if that's what you're asking."

Castle smirked in Kate's general direction. "Look, you even liked 'Death of a Prom Queen'. That makes you a hardcore Castle fan." He knew how much she hated when he mentioned that, so of course he was going to mention it.

After turning back to Lucifer, Castle squinted at the two shirts he was holding up. "Uhhh... are they different colors?" He wasn't a huge fashionista, instead preferring pretty standard button downs and blazers.

Castle shrugged at Lucifer's question after Kate qualified. "It's hard to be mad at her for something that hasn't even happened to me." Of course he didn't love the idea that she apparently left him, but it was a silly thing to hold on to, especially since she apologized.

"And I won that bet with myself," Lucifer said smugly.

Glancing at Castle he said, "Good on you. I kept telling her you wouldn't want her feeling guilty for all eternity. And no, they're the same color."

When Kate came out, he asked her, "Which one? Both?" Then he turned his attention back to her husband. "So you followed her around for research? Good thinking!"

"Death of a Prom Queen? That's not the worst one, Castle." Kate knew by saying that she was admitting that she was a fan of his books, but that really wasn't the point. "It's Hell Hath No Fury, by far." But even if it wasn't her husband best work, she had still read it more than once and she was pretty sure he knew that.

Glancing at the two shirts, Kate hesitated for just a moment, narrowing her eyes slightly while she decided. "Go with the sky blue, it'll play better off your skin. The other isn't as eye catching." And God knew Lucifer was one for attention.

"Of course I did," Castle told Lucifer. "Great excuse, right? She really was my muse though." His Nikki Heat series based on her had been a smashing success. Of course there was an initial sexual attraction to her that probably wouldn't have blossomed into love if she had taken him up on it early in their relationship.

"Wow, really?" He asked Kate. "That's harsh." She wasn't wrong, but still. And it wasn't like he didn't know that she had read all of his books multiple times.

Castle watched as Kate picked between the two shirts. He still wasn't really sure there was that much of a huge difference.

"Thank you," Lucifer said to Kate, putting the other shirt back and looking for more.

"I want to read one of your books," he mentioned to Castle. "Because I'm curious, since the first thing that I learned about you was that you were a writer, and you had a thing for brooding. Apparently I do as well." He glanced over at Kate, then back at the selection of black shirts in front of him, selecting two.

Given limited funds he figured he should stock up on the basics. "Why aren't you shopping for more clothes?" he asked. "The replicators aren't that great."

"A cult of Wiccans in a small town that have been responsible for the disappearances of people for decades?" While Kate sounded skeptical, there was that glint in her eyes, the one that was usually the sign that even though she believed what she was saying she was mostly hanging on to her insistence for the purpose of riling him up. "You told me yourself it wasn't your best work."

He had also called her a hardcore groupie in that same conversation, but at this point in their relationship, Kate would readily admit that she appreciated and respected Castle's talent and his work. She just wouldn't admit to being obsessed, because she wasn't any longer. And when she had been -- well, she had reasons for that. His books had helped her cope with her mother's death.

"Don't worry, Castle," she added at the last moment, suddenly worried that Rick would bring up the reason Kate had latched onto his books. She definitely wasn't ready or prepared for that conversation. "I still like you more than James Patterson." Hopefully, that would be enough of a distraction to steer her husband out of deeper waters.

Glancing over shoulder at Lucifer, she gave a shrug of her shoulders, "No problem. Happy to help."

It was a mark of Kate's overall progress with her status as Castle's muse and the inspiration for Nikki Heat that she didn't cringe at the mention of Lucifer reading Rick's books. There were plenty to choose from, not just Nikki, but she had a feeling that her friend wouldn't pick out any of the others. He would go for the books that involved her and, in doing so he would get a very different picture of....well, a lot of things.

Now she cringed a bit, already trying to prepare herself for the inevitable conversation about Heat Wave and the infamous page 105; not to mention the others....."You do," she said with a sigh, "Though Castle does less of it. Well, now at least."

"I was trying something different," he said in his defense. It hadn't quite worked out, so he'd gone back to the Derrick Storm series. "And you better like me more than Patterson. At least I write my own books. Wait, I brood?" He gave Kate a look.

"If this place has my books then you absolutely should read them," Castle told Lucifer with a grin. "You should start with Heat Wave. That's my first novel with the character inspired by Kate."

He eyed the display of shirts. Maybe Lucifer was right and he should pick up a few. Who knew when they would be docked again.

Lucifer grinned at Castle and nodded. "I'll have to look for it then. I'm more than interested in reading a story inspired by Beckett. Does the character always seem to be irritatingly right about things?" he asked. That was one thing he'd learned about Kate in a short period of time.

As soon as Castle glanced at the shirts, Lucifer pounced. Studying the other man for a moment, he selected three and handed them over, then went to look at blazers. He found two for himself right away, then started looking for Castle. "Right. This will do," he mentioned, eyeing him again for the sizing. "Here you go. Thank goodness they didn't go completely mental when it came to clothes in the future, right?"

"You're cuter than Patterson," Kate replied, doing her best not to laugh at the look he directed her way. "You do brood," she added, reaching out to place a hand on his bicep and gently pat the muscle with her fingers. "Not nearly as much since we started dating, but in the early days? You did a good bit of it. A lot of it was about Alexis growing up, though."

How many times had Castle come to work upset that his daughter was dating, or looking at colleges far away, or planning an extracurricular trip that would take her away from him for an extended period of time?

Tucking a piece of stray hair behind her ear, Kate kept her face impassive as Lucifer mentioned reading the books. At home, Castle had been working on the eighth one in the series, and she was an old hand at dealing with the teasing and attention that always came back around with the publication of a new one. Surely she could slide back into that role once Lucifer read the book. "What he isn't telling you is that the books are as much about him as they are about me," she said. Most of the time, Kate considered the books more a re-telling of she and Castle's story than specifically about her.

But that was all she said, too caught up in watching Lucifer take over and start tossing clothes at her husband. She generally resisted shopping for Castle, not wanting to pressure him into wearing things he didn't like just because she had purchased them, but this was too funny. One man in his element, the other looking a bit like a fish out of water.

He was absolutely cuter than Patterson, and glad that Kate had acknowledged that. Castle too could acknowledge that he did brood about Alexis, but he mostly saw that as being concerned that his daughter was growing up and wouldn't need him anymore. Frankly, it was true, at least by now. It had been harder when she was younger though.

Castle nodded seriously at Lucifer's question. "Oh yes. Very irritatingly right, but also very hot, so it evens out." He smiled sheepishly when Kate mentioned that he was in the books too. "Well. I had to write someone in to balance off of her. He turned out... kind of like me." Ok, a lot like him.

Castle caught the shirts that were chucked at him, willing to accept the devil's recommendations on them. Lucifer was a lot slimmer than he was though. "I was actually kind of hoping for something really campy, you know? Like the original Battlestar Galactica."

"So you have books about your relationship from a fictionalized point of view?" Lucifer asked. That was odd, but if it worked for them, he wasn't about to argue. Plus he was happy to have Castle agree with him. "Also Patterson is not even in the slightest bit attractive, so I'm not sure why you're even having this conversation," Lucifer mentioned.

"I've no idea what that means, but I'm afraid I don't do camp," Lucifer replied. "So even if they had gone down that path, I'd have entrusted myself to the replicator at that point."

Lucifer's knowledge of pop culture was really limited to B grade horror and martial arts films.

"Yes and no," Kate said quickly, "The trajectory of the relationship is the same, but it started way earlier in the books because this guy was living vicariously through his characters." She jerked a thumb in Castle's direction with the words. "He wanted to sleep with me, knew he wouldn't get that far, and just had Nikki and Rook sleep together instead." Which had gone from embarrassing to annoying to frustrating in the interim years before they had actually gotten together. "They break up a lot more than we do because they start dating so early on and there's some.....other things...that happen in the books that didn't happen. Or at least didn't happen to the character they affect in the book."

Kate didn't say that it was her shooting, it was another part of her history that she hadn't explained to Lucifer, but it was still on her mind and the reason why she briefing pressed her hand to the knot of scar tissue between her breasts that was always hidden by her clothing in public. "Patterson's a sore subject for Rick," she explained, thankful to move on from the shadowy places of her life, "And an easy way for me to tease him."

At the mention of Battlestar Galactica Kate laughed outright, quickly covering her mouth with her hand as one of the store attendants looked over in her direction in surprise. "Okay, no," she interrupted once she'd gotten a handle on herself, turning towards Castle, "If you're going to dress up as a sci-fi character it's gonna be the Captain from Firefly. You look like that guy anyway. Or Batman!"

"Woah, hey!" He said, trying to defend himself against Kate's psychological assessment of his writing process. The only problem was that she was right and therefore he couldn't. "It was better for the progression of the series." That was some bullshit she had heard before and was completely stupid, but that was the story he was sticking to for now.

He watched Kate's hand move over her chest and he knew what she was doing. It wasn't the place or time to mention it though, so he didn't.

"Ok, look, I love Firefly, but if I'm going to live in the future I really want it to be like where I get to wear a cape and jack boots and shoot lasers at people... like the original Star Trek. Also why isn't Bateman here? Lots of MCU, not a lot of DC."

Castle felt safe talking about this in front of Kate and Lucifer, since neither of them were from a fictional world.

Something in Kate's expression had changed when she discussed Nikki and Rook, and things being different in the books, but he didn't press the issue because this was neither the time nor the place and it was probably none of his business even if that had never stopped him before.

"Right, well my goal is to make you look good, but if you'd like to wear a cape I think I saw some for sale a few stores down," Lucifer mentioned to Castle. "Entirely up to you. In the meantime I need shoes, pants, more shirts, and all of the other essentials that I've missed considering you arrive here with almost nothing."

He shrugged at Castle's question, not really understanding how people like Leia and Luke and Han Solo were real, and he'd not given it much thought. Even if he totally would sleep with Leia still, even now that she was much older than in the original movies.

Kate's chuckle was full and bright, the smile she gave to Castle enormous. "You're such a little boy sometimes," she told him fondly, though she had also wondered why there weren't any DC characters. Marvel was nice and all, but you couldn't top the classics like Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman.

"Hey, he looks good regardless," Kate said to Lucifer, draping the clothing she planned to buy over one arm before taking a seat on one of the small couches that had been stationed near the fitting room. She assumed they were going to be there for a while. "He needs all of that, too. But Castle is.....he dresses a bit more casual than you most of the time. Jeans, t-shirts and that sort of thing."

"I don't want to be the only dude in a cape," he said. That would be decidedly not cool. "Yeah, my off work wardrobe usually consists of T-shirts and jeans.. but not dad jeans, please." Lucifer did dress very well. Castle didn't think he could manage that all the time, especially not if he technically wasn't working anymore. A few nice pairs of jeans and some T-shirts would be good.

Lucifer shrugged his shoulders, looking at Castle as though he was almost a lost cause. "Very well," he mused, glancing over to the more casual section of the store. "If you're going to dress casually, you might as well do it right. And I'd never put someone in dad jeans. That's insulting."

Jeans were tricky, especially when shopping for someone who wasn't him, and he wouldn't shop for jeans for himself. But based purely on sight, Lucifer was fairly certain he'd found three pairs of jeans that would fit right and look good. "Alright, try those on," he mentioned. "And you're still getting the other shirts I picked out for you and the blazer."

At this point he was all but ignoring Kate, having made it his mission to see to it that Castle had proper clothes.

"I wouldn't let you buy dad jeans," Kate said with a sigh as she got to her feet, reaching out to grab Rick's hand and tug him along behind Lucifer as he headed towards the casual section. They had never been shopping with him before, but she knew the signs of someone who was going to throw themselves into the task and not stop until it was done.

It was honestly a lot like herself when faced with a murder or Castle when a deadline was looming for his book and he was behind on chapters. Each person had their own thing that made them tick and it looked like Lucifer's was shopping.

"Should I leave the two of you alone....?" she asked, eyes flicking between Lucifer as he sorted through racks and her husband.

Castle turned to Kate and shrugged. "He seems to be enjoying himself so much that I don't really want to stop him," he said to her quietly.

He looked at the pile that Lucifer was making and most of the clothing did not look bad. V-neck T-shirts were questionable though. As long as they didn't make him look like a douche.

"Definitely not asking," he confirmed. It was interesting. Castle knew how to flirt with women, but men didn't flirt with him very often so he was at a bit of a loss with that. After another awkward look between Kate and Lucifer, Castle turned and went off to the dressing room.

"Babe, you look like a confused puppy." Kate said with a short laugh, halfway tempted to follow Castle into the fitting room both to clear up his confusion and to mess with him a little bite more. Not to mention it'd actually by fun for her, too.

But Kate stayed in the store, extending her armful of clothes for Lucifer to hold while she went on a clothing hunt of her own for her husband. Casual dresser or not, she knew Rick could wear the hell out of a suit and while they were here Kate was going to find him a good one.
