WHO: Kate Beckett and Rick Castle
WHEN: 224603.26; shortly after this
WHERE: Observation Deck
SUMMARY: Caskett reunion, FTW.
WARNINGS: Nah.

It wasn't exactly a short trip from her quarters to the Enterprise's observation deck, but Kate took it at a dead run. She had nearly knocked over at least one member of Starfleet on her way, taking a corner much too fast and clipping the poor guy's shoulder, but other than a shouted apology over her shoulder she hadn't stopped.

Thighs burning and her lungs growing tight with the need for air, Kate sprinted through the doors of the observation deck and skidded to a stop. Sucking in as much air as her taxed lungs would allow she began searching for her husband, tugging at the ends of one of her uniforms given to distinguish her as a security crewman on the ship. Of course, today of all days, she'd put on the dress. It was the one she liked the least, and the most impractical for her job, and tended to be the one she wore when actual work wasn't required.

Not the most fashionable wardrobe, but she had never thought to complain and had no opportunity to get anything other than what she had worn onto the ship at her arrival. Not that any of that mattered now.

Turning to the left, Kate spotted him, standing close to the window and gazing out at the expanse of space and for just a moment, she couldn't speak, too overcome by a spike of emotion that left her fighting back tears. She hadn't seen him for nearly three months. The longest they had been apart since they had gotten together.

Pushing back the tears, Kate stepped forward, waiting until she was close enough to touch him to speak his name. "Hey, Rick."

Castle was just astounded by this whole thing. Kate had managed to put together something really spectacular for him and it only made him love her even more. How had she found the time to do this? And how much did something like this cost? Or maybe it was one of those "Star Trek Experiences" that studios put together sometimes. Either way, it was top notch impressive.

He turned when he heard footsteps behind him and saw Kate. Castle grinned as she came running towards him. Was she crying? That confused him, but at least she looked happy.

"Hey, Mrs. Castle," he said and put an arm around her waist, pulling her in for a kiss.

What Castle had probably intended to be a rather innocent kiss was anything but to his wife. Kate went into it with guns blazing, sliding her hands up to cup his cheeks and attacking his mouth like the person that she was - a wife that hadn't seen her husband for three months and been carrying a load of guilt the entire time.

Could he taste her tears? She didn't know, but they were falling freely down her cheeks as Kate pulled back from the kiss, simply holding his face in her hands and soaking him in. "You're really here," she said after a moment, hastily reaching up to brush at the tear tracks on her cheeks. "I'm so happy to see you."

He was definitely not expecting this sort of outpouring of emotion. She was acting like she hadn't seen him in ages, which made no sense to him. They'd just gotten married last night. At least he thought it was last night.

"Yeah, I'm really here..." he said a bit apprehensively. "Kate, what's going on? Where are we really?" He was starting to get concerned now.

"Space," she replied simply, gesturing towards the window where the view was nothing but the inky black sky dotted with stars. "The actual Starship Enterprise. Today is March 26, or stardate 224603.26."

Kate almost blurted out the rest of it. How she had been here for months already, that she hadn't seen him in ages, but she held her tongue. It was overwhelming enough to learn that you were in space and had time traveled. There was no sense in piling it on just yet.

Brushing at her cheeks again, she let out a shaky sigh, "I know it might seem like it's a joke, but it's not. This isn't some fan experience like the Nebula 9 ship at that con, it's real. You're really on the Enterprise, babe."

It took him a long moment to process that. Castle had known Kate long enough to know when she was bluffing, and this was not a bluff. She wouldn't keep something going like this, even to preserve the illusion.

"...How?" was the first question that he was able to voice.

How. Well, that was the question that everyone wanted to know the answer to and, so far, the one that no one had been able to figure out. As far as Kate knew, it was as much a mystery to the crew on the Enterprise today as it had been when she and Peggy Carter had arrived within a few days of the 2246 New Year.

"No one knows," she said with total honesty, reaching down to grab both of his hands and gently squeeze them. "We just started appearing one day on the ship. It was slow at first, there were just a few of us. But over the weeks it kept happening and now there's......well, not a crowd, but a good number of us. People that you and I have watched in movies and read about in comics, even some that I think are in video games that I swear you've played."

"It doesn't make any sense, but it's what is happening." Kate gave him a small smile at that, rubbing her thumbs across the back of his hand in small circles. "And you'll love it once the shock wears off. I promise."

Castle squeezed her hands back as he listened to her talk. Everything she said sounded insane, but he knew Beckett to be not only incredibly sane, but also very rational. She would not be making this up, not even to make him happy.

"So.. what you're saying is... we've somehow been transported to the real starship Enterprise along with various movie and comic book characters who are now real?" Just wanted to make sure that he got it.

"Nearly two hundred and fifty years into the future. That's exactly what I'm saying," Kate agreed with a nod, the relief that Castle didn't think she was insane or continuing to lie to him obvious in the way that the remaining tension seemed to drain from her shoulders and the sharp angle of her jaw.

"Captain Kirk is really nice?" She added that part at the last minute, hoping somehow to soften the blow by telling her husband something good about one of his favorite fictional people.

"So this isn't the best honeymoon ever. This is officially the best life ever." Castle's face broke into a huge grin. His 8 year old self had dreamed of nothing less. And let's face it, adult Castle isn't too far off from his 8 year old self. "Oh my God, he was real. And I talked to Princess Leia, and she's real."

And there it was, Kate thought to herself. The little kid that lived inside a grown man who had a level of enthusiasm that still managed to surprise her so many years later. She was pretty much convinced that no one else in the world could match Castle for the level of devoted fanboying that he had for practically everything.

But it was one of the things that she thought was most adorable about her husband. It was that exact sort of childlike joy that made it so easy for her to forget the pain of losing her mom, the fact that her job was so hard and so often emotionally draining.

"He was real," Kate confirmed with a laugh, hoping up on her toes to brush a quick kiss against his lips. "Leia left a comment on something I posted on the network once, and I nearly squealed because I was so excited."

And for anyone who knew Kate Beckett, squealing wasn't something that she did often. She was a sci-fi nerd just like her husband, unapologetically so, but she didn't tend to broadcast her love of it all for the entire world. Usually just Castle.

"Nerd," Castle said with a smile. He loved that Kate could geek out with him on at least some of the things he liked. It made him happy to share that with her. "Wait, how long have we been here? Because the last thing I remember, we had just gotten married and we were about to leave on our honeymoon. Have I been asleep or something?"

The way Kate was talking about everything here made it seem like that she had been here longer for some reason. But that didn't make any sense.

"You know it," Kate agreed with a smile, one that dimmed significantly at his next question.

Giving a long exhale, she reached up to push her hair back behind her ear, one of her tried and true methods to stall for a bit of time. "That's another hard thing," she said. "People come through from different points in time. You just got here, but I've been here for almost three months."

Kate could have stopped there, but she didn't. It was better to go ahead and rip off the bandaid completely. "But I'm not from the same point as you, Rick. I'm nearly a year ahead, closer to our first anniversary than our wedding."

There wasn't anything joyful about her voice when she told him that. Kate looked like what she was, a woman plagued by guilt and it was unmistakable from the way her eyes lost their sparkle and began to reflect pain, even in the way her posture changed, curving onward as if she were trying to protect herself from something unseen.

That was certainly weird, even if Castle could understand the concept of different timelines. What was even stranger was her reaction to what she told him. The look on her face made his smile falter.

"Kate. What happened?"

"I -- uh....." she couldn't just tell him. The words that Kate needed to explain it all wouldn't come, just remained stuck in her throat. A whole novel's worth of words buzzing in her head and stuffed in her mouth, waiting to be poured out.

It was ridiculous to let him go, to pull her hands away from his and take a step away, but she found she needed the distance. With Castle so close after the two of them had been apart for so long, it was a little hard to think straight. "I broke up our marriage," she said softly, her voice breaking on the last word as fresh tears clouded her eyes. "And it was stupid and I'm an idiot and I'm so, so, so sorry I did it, but I just -- some things happened and I was scared that you or Alexis or your mom would end up killed for something I did and I couldn't take that chance. I couldn't let someone hurt you because of me."

Castle listened to her, his brow furrowed. When the tears started falling down her cheeks, he reached out and took her hand. Sometimes it was hard when Kate went on like that. Not that she was overdramatic, but he wondered if it was really as bad as she said it was, and it wasn't just guilt eating her.

"What did you do that someone was trying to kill you?" This time, he resisted adding. Castle did know when the time for jokes was.

"When I was working for the Attorney General's office, I used my security clearance to run a search on Bracken," Kate started at the beginning, using her free hand to brush at the tears staining her face for the second time since she walked into the room. She didn't bother to explain anything other than that because Castle knew her history with U.S. Senator William Bracken just as well as she did. The man that had bribed his way into power, who had cheated and lied, had murdered at least eight people that she knew of, including her mother. "You know why I did it, but I came up empty. I never got a hit and when I left the AG's office I forgot about it."

"In September, I got a phone call; a protocol seven distress code from an analyst inside the Attorney General's office. His name was Vikram and he started after I left, but he got the notification that the search I ran on Bracken had pulled out a hit - a declassified memo detailing a meeting between Bracken and another federal official. It was mostly redacted, nothing useful in it, but in the margin there was a little bit of writing. The name Loksat and what turned out to be the tail number on an airplane."

"Vikram passed that memo to Rachel McCord, and he forgot about it just like I forgot about my search, but that day Rachel and the rest of my old team from the office were killed in a car accident. The man that replaced me on the team was killed that night in a bar and then someone tried to kill Vikram but didn't get the job done. He came to me for help, and to warn me, but it was too late. They had already tracked my location through my cell phone and I had to shoot some guys so we could escape." Kate left out the part where one of them grazed her with a bullet, already knowing that at some point Castle would see the faint scar on the right side of her body, a sharp line across her ribs that she just chalked up to another war wound. It fit right in with her surgery scar running down her left side and the raised scar tissue between her breasts from the bullet that had nearly killed her.

"He and I went on the run, unable to contact anyone because we thought the men after us would be expecting that and might be sitting on the loft or the precinct and waiting for just that. You, Ryan and Esposito ended up working the scene of the guys I killed, you figured out that I was involved and in danger, and of course you started nosing around," Kate said that part with a sigh, the smile she gave him strained but still incredibly fond of the man standing in front of her. "We all found out, through our seperate investigative work, that Bracken had a silent partner in his drug ring and money laundering scheme, someone high up in the CIA with the connections to smuggle the heroin into the country unnoticed. This guy had been at this for so long that he didn't want anyone finding out, and killing people that he suspected had information wasn't a big deal. He killed my friends from the AG's office, he sent someone to kill Bracken in his cell because he talked to me and later to you. They were going to kill you because they thought you knew where I was hiding or because you might have information about Loksat."

There was more, so much more that it still made her head spin and her heart ache, but Kate stopped there, content that she had hit the high points of the story. Now wasn't the time to tell Rick that he had a step-mother who, like his father, was a spy. "They set us up with a patsy, in the end, someone that was a convenient fall guy for being the mastermind behind all of this. Everyone bought it but Vikram and me, and I tried to let it go. I tried to just ignore that this guy was out there and could come back and kill you, or come after me. But I couldn't stop thinking about it. This man helped Bracken, he might have been involved in my mother's murder, he definitely killed people that I cared about because of that search I ran on Bracken."

While she wanted to shrink away, to fold in on herself and refuse to look at Castle, Kate wouldn't let herself. She lifted her chin and met his eyes directly, giving him no doubts that she was speaking the truth. "I made a choice. I chose to find Loksat and put him down, to avenge Rachel and the others and to protect you, Alexis, and everyone else we love. And at the time I thought the only way to do that, to make sure you didn't find out and try to get involved and possibly get yourself killed was to leave you."

The worst of it said she reached out for his other hand, holding them both in hers as she sniffed back another wave of tears. "I never wanted it to be permanent. I want time to find this guy, end the threat and come back home. But it was stupid, Castle. It was stupid because nothing is more important to me than you and our relationship, and I should never have left without telling you the truth. But I was so scared that something would happen to you and I knew I couldn't live with myself if I got you killed because I couldn't get past this."

That was a lot of information that Kate threw at him, and he did his best to listen without interrupting. He furrowed his brow. Hearing this story was an odd sensation, almost like Kate was telling him about a dream that she'd had.

He couldn't really be mad at her for something that he had never actually experienced, though he did have a few questions.

"Kate... I get that you were trying to protect my family and I, but why would you think I would just let you go without finding out the truth? And why didn't you let me help you fight this?"

"Your family?" Kate asked the question quietly, something in her eyes reflecting just a bit of surprise and hurt. "I think of them more as our family."

"You let me go because I asked you to do it," she said simply. "I told you I needed some space and at least for the first few days, you gave it to me. I doubt that lasted very long, but I ended up here and have no idea what happened after that."

"I didn't let you help me because I wasn't going to risk your life over my obsession. I was scared it would get you killed, and I think....." Kate paused for a moment, trying to come up with the right word to explain herself. "I think I was ashamed, too. Ashamed that I was putting the investigation ahead of you and our life together. At the time it was safer, and easier, to just leave you out of it all and try to do it myself."

"Yes, our family," he said with a nod. He hadn't meant to make her feel excluded from that. It would take him some time to remember that Kate was literally his family now.

Castle exhaled slowly, listening to her speak. "I know how you are, Kate, and I can't say any of that surprises me. Not that it matters much now since we're here... but you know I never want to be excluded from stuff like that, even if it's dangerous. I want to help you fight anything that comes our way. You're my wife, and that means that it's not just you anymore, it's us. Anything threatening you is threatening me as well."

He truly believed that they were stronger together and that the best way to solve anything was with both of them.

"You're right," she told him, lifting one hand to brush against his cheek. "At the time, I thought I was doing the right thing but even a couple of days afterward, I wasn't so sure of that anymore. It felt wrong to be lying to you, to be away from you and keeping this huge secret. But fear kept me from coming back and telling you the truth."

"I know that's a stupid reason, but it's what made me do it and what kept me away from you. And then I ended up here and it just -- it all seemed so stupid. Being here just confirmed what I already knew, that I was supposed to be at home with you and that it should be the two of us together and I swore to myself that if you ever managed to show here, or as soon as I got to go home again, that I'd tell you everything and that I would fix this."

Rising up onto her tiptoes to eliminate most of the remaining distance in their heights, Kate cupped his face in her hands again. "I'm not going to say something ridiculous like I can't live without you -- I could. But I don't want to; I'm a better person with you around and I love my life so much more when you're annoying me in the middle of the night because you have writer's block and want to talk to me, or telling me your latest crazy theory or some joke you read online. It's you and me, Rick. I'm a trainwreck when left to my own devices."

Castle smiled at her and leaned in to kiss her. "I can't be mad at you for something you haven't even done yet," he said. "When I'm from, we just got married, so we're happy. And I'd like to think we're safe here. It will be nice to not have anyone trying to kill us for a while." Hopefully, at least.

He would miss Alexis and his mother, but he knew they would be able to go on without them. His daughter was an adult, practically a college graduate, and could take care of herself for the most part.

The relief was palpable when Kate tipped her chin up to kiss him back, lighting brushing her thumb at the curve of his jaw when she pulled away to give him the first genuine smile she had managed since they started talking about her more recent history. "Right, the dude ranch," she said with a chuckle, sliding her arms around his waist. "You bought me a six-shooter as a wedding present."

It was a small thing, but one of several that she probably needed to tell him. He didn't know about the P.I. office or that she was now Captain at the Twelfth or that Jerry Tyson had finally been put down. Rick didn't even know that he had won one of the highest honors a mystery writer could receive. So much had happened, so many of them good things that Kate wanted to share with him, "There's a lot more I think I should tell you, but the most important thing is that you and I? We're really good at being married, Castle. It suits us."

Castle nodded seriously. "Sounds like something I would do."

A lot could happen in a year's time - apparently enough to rock their marriage. He was curious about what else had happened between them and if they had made any headway yet into the time when he had disappeared.

"I'm glad to hear that," he replied, wrapping his arms around her, "because my track record on that isn't so great." Castle had always felt that it was different with Kate though. It was the one marriage he didn't have any doubts about.

"Hey, no," Kate said quickly, shaking her head at him. "The only track record I care about is ours and, in my opinion, you were doing great. Even when it's been hard, it's been great."

Leaning in to dust a kiss at his cheek, she sighed. "Are you hungry or anything? I can tell you more about what happened while you get some food."

The smile that bloomed over her face at the feel of Castle's hand encasing hers was one of those megawatt grins that Kate just couldn't hold in when she was really happy. It lit up her entire face and left her eyes sparkling, "It's not that bad," she replied, lightly squeezing his hand while she took the first step to lead him off the observation deck and into the corridor. "I wouldn't say it's as good as the food at home, but you aren't eating goo or powdered ice cream like they sell at the Air and Space museum."
