WHO: Kate Beckett and Richard Castle
WHEN: 226502.12
WHERE: Their quarters
RATING: Should be pretty low
STATUS: Ongoing
SUMMARY: It's time to make a few solid plans for what comes next.
WARNINGS: Negative.

In the 18 hours or so since Peggy's announcement, the atmosphere in the traveler's quarters had changed. Maybe it was merely the lack of worry and anxiousness on Kate's part, but she thought that everyone seemed to be smiling a little more, laughing a little easier when she had seen them in the mess hall or along the corridors of the Enterprise.

Even the traveler's who were going home seemed happy for some sort of resolution.

For her, there had never really been a decision. She was pregnant, she and Castle had decided with their decision to start a family here and now that they were effectively giving up their life together at home though, she could admit, so much of their decision had happened because neither of them had expected the chance to ever go home would be given to them. But even so, she didn't regret it. At just 15 weeks pregnant, Kate already loved her child with a fierceness that would have led her to drastic measures if Starfleet had insisted on sending all of them back to their home worlds.

Pressing her key card to the door to her living quarters, Kate waited for the retractable door to withdraw before she stepped inside. The collection of possessions she and Castle had collected on their year living on the Enterprise was pretty small but she still wasn't thrilled with the idea of packing all of it up and hauling it to Earth with them.

But boy was she happy for the opportunity to get off a spaceship permanently.

"Hey Castle," she called, sliding her card back into her pocket even as she tightened her hold on the small envelope in her other hand. "You busy?" She figured he was probably writing, or procrastinating, but you could really never tell.

"Oh God, don't tell me," Kate replied, wrinkling up her nose in distaste at the thought. She'd managed to find a pretty great apartment after months of striking out when a serial killer had blown up her original one, and if it hadn't been for marrying Castle and moving into his loft, she probably would have died in that apartment. Rent and apartment applications were no joke in Manhattan and she had no desire to move across the bridges into Brooklyn or Queens.

"You sure that fortune of yours didn't come with you to the 23rd Century?" she asked as she stepped into the bedroom, taking a seat on the edge of the bed close to Castle's hip. "Cause it'd be very helpful right now."

Though, really, Kate had already resigned herself to living in the boroughs or even upstate just for the sake of affordability. It wasn't really what either of them wanted, but it'd do for a while.

Shoving those thoughts aside, she tapped the envelope in her hand idly on her thigh. And then there was that nervous habit of hers, chewing lightly on her bottom lip, though Kate caught herself at it and immediately stopped. "We haven't really talked about this but I figured I'd pick up the results and see what you wanted to do," she told him, aware that she wasn't really explaining herself properly.

"You know that the med bay does all sorts of tests everytime I go in for a visit," Kate said, "And on my last one, they did a blood test. It's routine, and everything turned out just fine, but the blood test can also give the gender of the baby. So, when they asked if I wanted to know, I told them to put it in here because we hadn't decided and, you know, even if we had I wasn't about to find out without you."

Castle sat up when he noticed that she was nervous, and when she continued speaking, he could understand why.

"Yeah.. I think I do want to know. That way we can pick a name soon and start calling the baby by it." He moved so that he was sitting on the edge of the bed next to her. "Knowing this isn't going to change our minds about staying, right?" He didn't think so, but he just wanted to make sure before they opened it.

"Not for me," Kate replied immediately, lightly nudging his arm with her own. "I don't know that I realized it at the time you and I decided to try for a baby, but we pretty much gave up on going home then, don't you think?"

There was a small part of her that wondered if this baby could at all be the same as the one Lucifer had told her that she had at home, but Kate had resigned herself to never ask him. If the answer turned out to be no, it'd destroy her just as thoroughly as the idea of going home and given up this child.

And hadn't Lucifer told her that she was home and happy? So, in some way, her other child was loved and taken care of. It still tore her to pieces if she really stopped to think about it but she could accept it nonetheless.

He nodded. "Yeah... I think we did. There was never any guarantee that we'd be able to bring the baby with us through the nebula."

It had been a difficult decision, but Castle still felt that it was the best one. They could be happy here. As for timelines back home, those to him were lives that weren't lived, doors that weren't opened. Perhaps what was behind those doors would be better than the life they had chosen, or perhaps they wouldn't be. There really was no way to know.

"Ok. The envelope please." Castle began a drumroll on his thigh. "And the winner for sex of the Caskett baby is...."

Kate had really intended for Castle to open the envelope and tell her what was inside, if only because he had a taste for the dramatic and he would certainly milk the situation. If Rick had ever wanted to go into acting like his mother, he could have been a huge success. They had the same theatrical flair.

"Okay, okay," she said with a laugh, edging her fingernail under the flap of the envelope and carefully ripping it open. Inside was a single sheet of paper, a paper that she immediately knew was the overall test results of the bloodwork that the Med Bay had performed to check for any complications or problems linked to genetics or Kate's age. But down at the bottom was the one thing she hadn't known, listed in all capital letters.

Kate hadn't been committed to the gender of the baby, just hoping for one that was healthy, but she knew what Castle had been hoping for - a boy. And maybe it was that reasoning that had her flashing him a big grin as she passed the paper to him, "It's a boy."

He couldn't help grinning and uttering a loud, hissed "Yes!" when Kate announced that they were having a boy. Grabbing her around the waist, he kissed her lips before taking the paper from her. He, too, would have been happy with either sex, but was very glad that he was going to have his first son.

"I'm so happy, Kate."

Oh, he was cute, Kate thought, unable to stop herself from laughing at Castle's reaction to the news. He loved Alexis, he loved having a daughter, but she wasn't surprised that he wanted a son. Rick's own history with his dad, mainly not having one, was one of the reasons Kate thought he was such a great dad in his own right, he wanted to give his kids all the things he never had with his own.

"You should frame that," she said after he kissed her, obviously teasing him, "Remember how excited you were when it's 3 a.m. and neither of us can sleep because the baby is crying."

Though, honestly, she couldn't imagine either of them regretting it.

But teasing aside, Kate leaned over, giving him another quick peck on the lips, "But I'm happy, too babe. I think this is perfect."

"Uh, you may recall that I have done the dad thing before," he replied with a smirk. Not that he loved waking up at 3 AM, or looked forward to it, but he knew that it was part of the deal. They'd get through it. There were so many wonderful things that came after the sleepless nights.

Castle hugged Kate to him, accepting her kiss. "I think it's perfect too. I'm so ready to start our lives together."
