"I am Illya," he replied simply enough. His vodka came and he took a sip before turning back to the other woman. "If you do not mind me asking, what is the name of your species?"

In that moment, Illya hoped to God that she actually was some type of alien species and not some form of evolved human.

"I do not know what the Terrans call us. And I never met anyone else of my species besides my family." She took a sip of her drink as she studied him.

"You are one of the travelers, yes? What do you do?"

That seemed kind of odd to Illya, that the only people like her that she would have ever met were her own family. In a way, that must make life kind of lonely. He could sort of relate.

"Here I work with security." That was where he had seen Jaylah, on his rounds. "Back home, I work for an organization in the Soviet Union called Komitet gosudarstvennoy bezopasnosti, or KGB in English. I am a spy."

That was weird for him to admit so freely here, as back home doing so to the wrong person could have easily cost him his life.

She knew well enough what a spy was. That had been covered at the Academy. But she didn't know anyone who would admit it. Weren't spies supposed to be secretive?

"If you are spy before how does Jim know he can trust you here?" she asked, taking another sip of her drink. "If you are admit to lying once, then you might be lying again."

This woman asked straightforward questions. Illya actually liked that. No bullshit to cut through. He downed a bit more of his vodka.

"I am not a spy here. The organization I worked for, I do not even think it exists in this time. I have no reason to lie." He swirled the clear liquid in his glass for a moment before posing this question. "If someone lies once, is that a reason to never trust him again?"

"And the only proof you have of that is your word. It is - what is the word - dilemma. If you tell no one that you were spy, you are lying but they trust you because they do not know the lie. If you tell them you are spy, you are honest, but they maybe do not trust you because you admit to lie."

Jaylah shrugged and took another sip of drink.

"Still is better to know facts. I tell you I am better at hitting things than talking well, you prepared in case I hit you."

She considered his question. "How do we know you will not lie again?"

"All of us will lie in our lives. That is a given fact." That was just human nature. Lies happened, often to preserve oneself or another. "You may ask if I have anything here to lie about. For a long time, I thought that this was a test being put on by the government. My partner and I decided to out ourselves when we realized that it was real, and that we would not be doing any work here."

Illya mirrored her shrug. "And then I suppose, you can take my word, or leave it, or wait until you see how I act and what you think of me."

"Is it? There are some species that are incapable of lying."

She drained her glass and signalled for a refill. "Why would it not be real? Would your government actually do something like that to you?"

"There are? All I know are humans, and all of them lie." Of course, he wouldn't know if there were any alien species who couldn't lie.

Illya laughed just a little at question. "Honestly, I would not put it past them. They wish to put us through rigorous training, make sure that we are ready for many different scenarios."

He knew that members of both the KGB and CIA had been dosed with drugs like LSD without their knowledge. Thank God that hadn't happened to him. Perhaps someone at the Kremlin was smart enough to know that you didn't give a volatile man like Illya a volatile drug.
