Carol and Jim

Carol sat at the bar, nursing a beer. The past week, since Troi had come on board, the general mood on board the Enterprise had been tense. While she was probably supposed to be cooperating with him, she couldn't help but feel sorry for the travelers, who seemed to be worried about him and his intentions. Frankly, her own worries were in line with theirs. The travelers hadn't done anything wrong, and for the most part they were good people. She didn't want to see them subjected to needless interrogation.

She glanced up when she noticed someone sit down at the bar next to her, only to notice that it was Jim. There was a tiny flutter in her stomach that she fought down. Ugh. No need for that. Especially not after the tense way their last conversation ended.

"Captain," she said plainly.

Jim turned and grinned at Carol. "Dr. Marcus," he greeted, his smile widening. "Fancy meeting you here," he joked. "You know, the place where we all end up at some point or another." Though, and he regarded her curiously for a moment - "I am actually surprised to find you here. Isn't working until you fall asleep more your MO?"

Carol turned to him, a sharp look in her eye. "Really, Jim?" she said. "That's how you want to start off tonight?"

Was insulting her his way of flirting? Possibly. Better to not get any sort of hopes up though. Not that she really wanted him to flirt with her anyway. He'd made it clear that he was her superior officer and that he wasn't interested in her in that way. For some reason that made her feel hollow.

"God forbid you have crew members who actually like their jobs."

How he was going to start off tonight? He raised an eyebrow. "Relax, Carol, I was teasing you. How much have you had to drink already tonight?" To be that defensive, to take offense to his teasing. He shrugged. "Honestly, I'm glad you like your job, I just think you would do it even better if you weren't overtaxing yourself." He motioned for a bartender and ordered himself a beer as well.

"Just this," she replied. She wasn't drunk, just irritated with him and how she felt about him, and was taking everything personally. "What else do I have to do except my job?" Carol asked before taking another drink. It's not like she had Leonard to worry about anymore. She didn't even have Napoleon to worry about, though she was glad that he was happy with his girl.

Carol brushed a piece of hair behind her ear and sighed. Being mad at him was childish. He hadn't done anything wrong, even if she hadn't perceived his comment as joking. "I'm sorry that I told you off when we first met."

He turned to the side and crossed an arm over her chest. "Everyone on this ship gets free time for a reason, Carol. You could spend some time in the holodeck, do some reading, meet up with friends, get to know the travelers, exercise in the rec room, should I go on?"

Carol rubbed her forehead between her eyes for a moment. "I do those things as well, Jim. I'm promise I'm not entirely a workaholic." She had friends, wasn't a total invalid. Honestly, the work made her happy though. It made her feel as though she was contributing to society, maybe helping to correct some of the horror that her father than inflicted upon it.

She glanced up, waiting to see if he would say anything about her apology. When he didn't, Carol furrowed her brow. "So.. apology not accepted or what?"

"Apology accepted," he told her, brushing it off. He might have been teasing her about it but he had otherwise put it mostly out of his mind. "I just want to make sure you aren't overdoing it, Carol, that's all."

Apparently he didn't want to talk about their earlier conversation over the PADD, which probably shouldn't surprise Carol that much. Jim didn't seem like the type who liked to have extensive open discussions about his feelings. That in turn made Carol realize that she probably had a type.

"I'm not overdoing it, but if you're worried, stay here and have a few drinks with me. Make sure I'm not running back to the lab." She took a swig of her beer.

"When's your next shift?" he asked, turning to lean his arms on the bar top as he worked through his own beer. "As in, how many beers can you have and still turn up sober next time you're on shift?" Jim grinned.

“Tomorrow,” she replied, “so I can have a few more and I’ll be fine.” Jim had a nice smile. Damn him. Coming this soon off of dating Bones, she probably wasn’t supposed to be flirting with his best friend. It wasn’t as if their relationship had gone very far though. The extent of it physically was some kissing, and it was clear that Bones was never emotionally invested.

"And you can probably take a pill to make sure you don't wake up with a hangover, too, hmn?" He leaned in toward her, almost conspiratorially. "That's what I do, at least."

"Careful, Jim," she replied with a raised eyebrow. "You're sharing all your secrets." She definitely could take a pill, and might, depending on how the night went. After finishing her beer, she placed the empty bottle on the bar and signaled for another one. "How do you keep yourself busy here on board when you're not working?"

"Would it surprise you to hear that I like to read?" he asked, a moment after her question, for some reason that he couldn't explain. It wasn't like he told very many people that he liked to read. It would ruin his reputation.

"Yes," she answered honestly. While Carol knew that Jim was not nearly as dumb as he looked or acted sometimes, she still hadn't pegged him as someone who read often. "What are you reading right now?" Despite her doubt, her question was curious, not accusatory, as if she didn't believe him.

He couldn't help but grin. Of course it surprised her. It surprised everyone who knew, and that wasn't very many people at all. "A treatise on the affect of democracy on sub-light civilizations," he said.

Carol liked his grin, even if she tried to hide that fact. "That sounds like reading for work, not pleasure, Captain," she responded, her tone teasing. It made sense that he would have to read information as Captain. She was more interested in whatever he was reading for fun though.

"Wasn't assigned to me," Jim pointed out. "So that means it's not for work." That was enough for him as a distinction at least.
