WHO: Jacen Solo & open
WHEN: 224603.26; evening
WHERE: Corridors
SUMMARY: Jacen makes his way to his new quarters, with a few exploratory detours along the way.
WARNINGS: None yet

Jacen was about to set off on his voyage to learn about the Force, things his Uncle Luke's Jedi Academy and Vergere hadn't taught him. Other groups of Force users existed in the galaxy, after all. Someone had to reach out to them.

So he wasn't too confused about being aboard a new spaceship. A little discomfited at the confiscation of his lightsaber, but ... well, he could cope without it. He couldn't sense much distress in the area, after all, beyond the usual tensions of sentient beings in close quarters with each other. And just because he didn't have his lightsaber didn't mean he was totally disarmed.

He wandered along a corridor, browsing the information on his PADD. So, his parents and Uncle Luke were here. That was ... nice, actually. They hadn't had much time to catch up in a peaceful setting like this, not with the war going on. He faintly wished Jaina could be here as well (and maybe Tenel Ka, not that he'd say as much out loud), but hey ... he could put up with hanging out with his parents and uncle alone for now.

And who knew? Perhaps there'd be opportunities to learn new things as well.

Han saw Leia first when she came in, and saw she wasn't alone. There was someone with her. There was no mistaking who it was, but he looked older...far from the young teen Han had left behind. Still, Han was glad to see him.

He got up and came over to them, offering a lopsided smile.

"Jacen...is that you? Boy am I glad to see you. But you look...you've grown up." He looked at Leia for a second, then back to his son. "It's complicated...I guess there's a few more years than usual between us."

Leia startled, only a bit, at the sight of Han. How young he actually looked, face to face like this. She offered him a smile back and stepped to the side to let them have their reunion. "Everything about this is complicated," she said wryly. Then she gestured for an open table. "Pretty coincidental running into you here too, Han," she said. She searched his face. He looked like her husband. Not much of a change except for the fact that he was younger than when she had last seen him. That and all the differences in their timelines.

"Dad!" Jacen brightened (again, that brief light in the Force) and nodded. "Blaster bolts, I've only been here a few hours and it's already the second-worst kidnapping ever. Oh-- I'm twenty-one," he finishes, deflating slightly.

Yes, this was his father -- but it looked like his father from several years ago. Before the war, before Anakin ... before Chewbacca.

Jacen would have to have a lot of secrets here, he was realising.

"Yeah...very true." He agreed. He sat down with them after retrieving his meal from where he'd been before. His attention turned to what Jacen said.

"Wow...that's a lot." Han had a lot going through his mind hearing that. 22...how much had happened in that time? What had Jacen been through? What had he been through himself? He wasn't sure he wanted to know.

"Last I remember, you were still a young teen. It was about four and a half years after your uncle Luke's wedding." He said. "It's hard to imagine what's gone on since then...but I really don't think I want to know. It looks like you're doing all right, though."

Han could see a difference in Jacen's eyes and face...he suspected things hadn't been good at times, but he felt better not knowing what it was. Unless somehow it could be changed...for now, though, he wasn't pushing it.

Leia looked back and forth between Jacen and Han for a moment, feeling like an outsider intruding on this family conversation. She marveled at how different the exchange was from anything recent between her husband and Ben. She frowned and tried not to mull too hard on situations that might have been. Her life was her life, even if this short exchange hete proved that it could have been different. "Jacen," she said. "Are you hungry? I can pick something up while the two of you catch up." She looked meaningfully but briefly at Han, hoping he might pick up on the fact that he could explain whatever this discrepency between all of them was while she was gone.

So, right before Dubrillion, if Jacen had his math right. Definitely before Chewbacca. He shook his head with a small, sad smile. "I was Uncle Luke's apprentice for a while -- well, you probably remember that much anyway. I'm a Jedi Knight, now."

He stopped to look at his mo-- at Leia, with a smile. "Yeah! Do they do nerfburgers here? Whatever the equivalent is, I need two, with all the trimmings."

Han could sense Leia's awkwardness too, and he knew it must be strange for her....probably a lot like how he'd felt talking to her and Luke before. Familiar, yet like he didn't quite belong, either.

"Yeah, I remember that much." Han agreed. "And that's good. Jaina and Anakin, too?" he asked.

Leia asked Jacen if he was hungry, and Jacen agreed. Han chuckled...the boy always had a good appetite. And her idea was good...they could talk alone for a few moments while she got the food.

"Something like that, I think." he replied. "If you're wondering, what's in here can be a little unpredictable at times, but at least it tastes all right."

As she walked away, she heard "trained with Uncle Luke" and "Jedi Knight," and her fist clenched against her side. It was different, she told herself. Jacen looked out together. He didn't look filled with the same anger that Ben had often displayed, anger that her brother told her would push him to embrace the dark side.

She picked up a tray and filled it was a soup and salad for her and a burger - not nerf but some other red meat - slathered in sauces and such for Jacen. She returned to the table and slipped into a seat. "So, Jedi Knight?" she said. "How's that going for you?"

Jacen pondered for a moment how best to answer his father's question without revealing too much, if anything, about the war. About the worst of the past five years. At least without lying out right.

"Anakin's ... something of a role model," he decided, and smiled at Han. "It's been, well, a tumultuous few years for the galaxy. He and I still had our arguments for a while, but he really stepped up and became a better Jedi Knight than I'll ever be, I'm sure. As for Jaina--" He laughed a little. "Well, you know she takes after you most. She left Aunt Mara to join Rogue Squadron for a while, you know. But she's a Knight as well now, probably on some important mission with Zekk while I'm here eating burgers."

He accepted the food gratefully and took a bite almost before putting down the plate. After a couple years of mostly military rations, not to mention the weird substances that passed for food on Yuuzhan'tar, he was still getting used to having access to real food again whenever he wanted. And this was good.

"It's going well -- it's only been a little over a year since I was officially Knighted, though. I still feel like there's so much more to learn."

Han suspected Jacen might be holding back, but he didn't push. If it came out along the way, he wouldn't fight it, but he wasn't going to press, either. "Sounds like business as usual, really. Trouble in the galaxy, you two arguing on and off." he said.

Han nodded. "That is definitely Jaina. She may take after your mom with the Force part, but the piloting skills are mostly from me. Okay, I'll give Luke's side a little credit." After all, there was the whole "Anakin-the first one-was a prodigy pilot who won a podrace" thing.

"Luke does say that. It makes sense...we never really stop learning. What we learn is a lot different depending what we're doing in life, but overall, it's the same kind of thing."

He noticed one thing. "What about Anakin? He's a knight, too, right?"

Leia still had no idea what to make of the idea that she willingly named a son of hers Anakin, but she didn't say so. "And there weren't any issues?" she ventured carefully. She poked at her salad before taking a bite. Then she sighed. She felt like an outsider, and she never liked that. She sat up a little straighter and cleared her throat a little bit, not knowing how to take part in the conversation. Decades of experience in politics and here she was, sitting with a man who was almost her husband and a man who wasn't her son (but was at the same time), and she didn't know what to say.

"Han, I'm curious," she said, looking between them. "Or Jacen, you could answer as well. When were you born?" Where was the difference? Why did this Han and his Leia have twins and she and her Han only had Ben?

And there it was. The direct question Jacen had hoped to avoid for now. Time to make a decision -- to choose and act, as it were. The Jacen that Han knew back home might have been mischievous, sneaking out with Jaina to explore Coruscant, convincing his little brother to build secret droids, getting into all kinds of trouble. But he was always honest about it in the end. Before the war, and the Yuuzhan Vong. Before Vergere.

Jacen smiled faintly, hiding regret and grief behind a facade both in expression and in the Force. (He wasn't sure how trained this version of his mother was, and didn't wish to burden her with his untruths. She'd clearly been through enough -- different from his mother back home, but at least as difficult.) "Of course," he told his father. "You know Anakin: he was born to be a Jedi Knight, even more than Jaina and me. I'm sure he'll take Uncle Luke's place leading the Order in twenty years or so. In fact, I'll bet twenty creds on it."

Who knew -- if there were other universes where his mother hadn't had twins, perhaps there was one where Anakin got to grow up. This idea cheered Jacen up a little as he took another bite of his burger, letting Dad field the birth question. (It was weird hearing your own mother ask that. She was supposed to be have been there, after all.)

Han was still a little suspicious, but he knew better than to make Jacen defensive or push him. He'd only get angry, and it wouldn't help. He did laugh at the comment, even so. "Yeah, it wouldn't surprise me." he replied.

"It was 9 years after Yavin." he replied to Leia. "During what we refer to as the Thrawn Crisis...the time when the Empire tried to reassert itself and Grand Admiral Thrawn tried to overtake everything. It was chaotic, I'll say that. My Leia was about to give birth, Luke was taken captive on Myrkyr...ironically the woman who was involved, who swore she'd kill him, is his wife now. I end up prisoner myself for a bit. But, somehow, we pulled through it. Luke had to kill a crazy Jedi clone who cloned Luke himself. That fight really made me nervous." he explained.

There had been more...Ackbar being accused of treason, Mara saving Leia's life...but he didn't want to go on too long and overload her.

"Anyway, the twins were born right as things finally came to a close. Anakin was born not even two years later. That's another tough story, if you want to hear it."

Leia took that all in and sat back, her food left ignored in front of her. She shook her head. Would anything have been different for Ben had she and Han waited longer? She didn't know the answer to that. She didn't even know if she wanted to know the answer to that. She took a deep breath. "My son - Ben - was born in 5ABY," she said simply, as though that was enough of a difference."

She pressed her fingertips to her temple for a moment. "I'm sure we could sit here all day and tell stories, so many another time," she said tiredly.

Jacen swallowed his last bite of burger and glanced at his not-mother. "So he'd be my big brother. Not just my older-by-five-minutes sibling like Jaina," he added, rolling his eyes with a fond smile. He wiped his hands on a napkin and leaned back in his seat.

He wondered for a moment if that sort of age gap might have helped his own relationship with Anakin. Having maturity backed up by actual experience, rather than misleading Force visions. Maybe they would have listened to each other, rather than arguing constantly.

His expression turned concerned. "We could. I'm sorry, M- Leia. Hey, tell me what this ship's like! It seems smaller than a Star Destroyer, but it's got a lot, right? I haven't had a chance to explore yet."

So her Ben was born earlier...Han was't sure how that would have gone. "My Leia...she was worried at first. She was afraid of what could happen to her kids because of what her father was. But, we had to make a trip to Tattooine to find something, and she came across the diary of Shmi Skywalker, Anakin's mother and the kids' grandmother. She saw some of what he was before...the part of him that wasn't a monster." Thinking back, the twins must have been conceived when they'd made love that night on Tattooine... " That was also, I think, why she chose Anakin for our third kid. I was pushing for Han Solo, Jr..."

Han nodded when she said they could talk all day. "It would be good to get together and talk a few other times, I agree." He could see that Jacen was doing a lot of thinking about what she was saying, probably, he surmised, about how things could have been different with him and his siblings or something like that.

Jacen shifted to another subject, and Han was happy with that as well. "I'd be all right with hearin' more...I'm still getting used to it myself."

Wasn't that everything that Leia herself had always worried about too? Why she and Han hadn't told Ben the truth about his bloodline? Why Vader was not a topic of conversation? A dark look passed across her face as she thought about what this Han in front of her was saying and she shook her head. She could never give her son the name Anakin. "Ben came along quickly after Endor," she said simply. She didn't go into details, that she and Han were surprised and not ready and weren't even fully committed to a future together by that point.

She was glad for the change in subject, and she nodded. "It's - clean," she said. "Almost sterile. From what I've read, Starfleet is military-like, though peacekeeping, not necessarily defensive. It's not really like any ship I've ever been on before myself."

Jacen nodded, glancing around. "At first it reminded me of Imperial ships -- yes," he added with a rueful grin at his father, "I've been on Imp ships recently, as a guest of Grand Admiral Pellaeon, not a prisoner.

"But a little ... friendlier. It certainly feels less militaristic than I've experienced lately, which is a nice change."

That got Han's attention. He knew they'd made peace, but it still made him wonder.

"Why was that? That you were on the Imperial ships? I mean, I know we made peace...I guess it's still taking some getting used to."

Jacen glanced at his not-mother with a rueful smile, then shook his head.

"Diplomacy, Dad. Don't worry, we're not best friends--"

Well, except maybe for Jagged Fel and Jaina, but he sure wasn't gonna tell Dad about that.

"--we just have common enemies."
