RP: Essay after essay
Date & Time: 19 November 1998 | Afternoon.
Post Type: RP.
Open To: Private.
Character(s): Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger.
Location: Braeburn Common Room.
Summary: School work has Ron a bit frazzled.

Ron felt right exhausted, even more run down than he usually did he‘d wager.

The redhead was currently searching through his trunk recklessly, knees digging into the stone floor of the Braeburn Gryffindor boy’s dorm. He was looking for a certain parchment that had a bunch of Charms notes scribbled (to the point of being indecipherable) onto it. There was a sizeable essay, one of two, due and though he hadn’t procrastinated as long as he typically did--- he had wasted enough time to warrant a mild panic. Feels like that’s all he’s been doing lately really, standing on the edge of a freak out over the large amount of coursework. Learning spell after spell, writing essay after essay and just trying to keep himself afloat and his head above water. Couldn’t for the life of him remember the last time he gotten a break. Played a game of wizard’s chess, went for a fly. Hell, he couldn’t even remember the last time he had seen Harry or Hermione. It’s probably been months if not longer.

Actually, he had seen both of them at breakfast just that morning but it only proved his point that all this school work was starting to turn him into a loon.

It took another minute before he finally found the parchment in question, grabbing it roughly and lifting it into the air, right in front of his face as a made satisfied noise along the lines of ‘aha!’ but more of a grunt than anything else. Ron got to his feet swiftly, moving to grab the rest of his study supplies (two books, few more pieces of parchment and his quill) off the bed before heading towards the door and pushing out into the staircase. The plan was pretty simple: he was going to give himself two hours before he wanted to have at least his introduction and a bit more done. Maybe half way through with the whole thing if his brain could pull it together long enough to focus but Ron wasn’t really betting on that to be happen. At least not today anyway, not with how he was currently feeling.

Things tucked under one of his arms, his pace was quick, making sure to hit each step on the way down. When he got to the bottom he paused in the doorway, blue eyes searching the area for a second or two. The Common Room was thankfully empty of people, noise, and distraction which was going to make this essay mess a bit easier. Ron decided against a table in favor of one of the brown couches near the fireplace because he always said and always would that he worked better the more comfortable he was. It was just a fact, really. Dropping down against the plush cushions, he began to get himself all situated. Setting his quill and the parchment down on the table in front of him along with one of the books, he took the other one and leaned into the corner of the couch, against the back and arm.

He had two hours to make some progress and that’s exactly what he was going to do. Ron opened the book, turned to the specified chapter and began to read.

Hermione had left her books in the common room several minutes ago and was scouring the library shelves for a book she was sure she had seen a couple of weeks ago. She hadn't needed it then, but it rang a bell when she'd seen the most recent set of Transfiguration essays. If she read the book now and put it back, by the time most people wanted it she could have it back on the shelves.

Finally finding the book she made a small triumphant noise and pulled it off the shelf, signing it out using the record book and headed back to the common room. She spotted an addition to the room since she'd left. She had set herself up in one of the corners near the other bookcases. Ron sitting with a book, she might have complained about him not studying in the past but he was trying this year. No matter what she might have suggested otherwise.

She wandered over to where he was sat, book still in hand and perched herself on the nearest arm of the sofa. "Hey, how is," she glanced at the book he was reading, "charms going?"

Ron could already feel himself starting to space out, blinking hard to keep the words from blurring together on the page as he sat up a little higher against the corner of the couch. Normally it was a challenge to study if only for the fact that school work never really seemed all that important in the scheme of things-- not with all the stuff they were contending with during their earlier years in Hogwarts. So there was still a bit of that sentiment swirling around but it was coupled with how overly tired he was feeling. Now that he was sitting there with the book open, he kind of wished there were other people in the room because he was feeling sort of drowsy and a bit of added noise would keep him from nodding off so he could stay on target.

No worries though. Of course Hermione would appear to save the day like always.

He looked over his shoulder, blue eyes instantly meeting brown ones the second her voice hit the air around him, breaking up the quiet. It really did feel like it had been months since he had seen the brunette girl regardless of reality. Things seemed to be wrapped in a hectic constant and their time together to simply be together was limited at best. No one’s fault really, just how things had happened to work out. A hint of his usual lop sided grin started to turn the corners of his mouth upwards.

“Hey.” He greeted back warmly before tossing a glance of his own down to the book in his lap. His brow furrowed somewhat to accompany the shrug he gave. “It’s going about as well as it usually does. Just tryin` to get through this bit of it so I can start an introduction.” Ron shifted over slightly so he could look at her without having to strain. “Shouldn’t you be in the library right around now, yeah?”

Pulling one leg up to balance herself she leant back slightly. She smiled back at him, pleased to see him outside of class or the Great Hall when they were eating. She rested her hand on her jean clad leg, waving the book she'd just retrieved at him with the other.

"Hey, I resent that!" she exclaimed, pretending to be scandalised. "I've just been to the library upstairs, and all my books are over there," she said, indicating the table behind her with her head. She couldn't help being amused at his teasing, it was nothing new, and familiarity was just so nice to have in a world that had changed so much recently. "I thought I'd get the Transfiguration book I want before everyone is trying to get it, save the school library."

Sometimes she still felt a little awkward around him, finding it hard to believe that they were actually a couple now, after liking him for so long. It wasn't as if they got a huge amount of time to just be a pair; between classes, homework and just generally trying to fit everything in it was hard.

“Upstairs library is still a library, innit?“ Ron shook his head, a rasp chuckle emitting deep in his throat as he took a look at the book in her hand. “Yeah, I’m sure that book is loads interesting and everything Hermione, but I don’t think you would have had much competition for it. No one really goes out of their way to get a book besides you.” His tone was light to take away any sting his words might have inflicted. She knew he was just messing around with her, or at least he hoped she did after all this time. The more he thought about it… suppose a bloke could never be too sure when dealing with a girl (a girl like Hermione no less), better to cover his bases. “Which is something I love about you, that uh you know-- you go out of your way for books.”

His save was probably less than subtle but to tell you the truth, he didn’t much care. There was already new thought floating around his head now. Another idea or notion to contemplate and it didn’t take long for him to just act on it because that’s what he was known for. Act now, possible regret later. Setting his Charms book to the side, the redhead abruptly reached for the girl next to him and pulled her down into his lap, waiting for the potential sheik, huff of indignation or reprimand. But like, they were a couple now. It was appropriate for him to do stuff like this. She probably didn’t think so but he did.

Ron didn’t attempt to kiss her or do anything else really but hold her in place. It was a bit sappy and Merlin knows he’d never admit it out loud with people around but well, just holding her was nice. When he spoke, it was a bit cheeky. “Thought this might be more of a comfortable seat than where you were.”

Hermione couldn't help but roll her eyes at Ron's suggestion that nobody but her went out of their way to get a book. She was about to protest, That's not true, I'll have you know that some of the Ravenclaws go out of their way to get books as well, when he continued. It was little things like that maybe she could have normal teenage experiences again. Ron tripping over his words like that made her cheeks flush slightly and her heart thud a tiny bit harder in her chest. He'd said the word love, even if he didn't mean it like that it made her pleased.

He did this to her from time to time, not always with words like that, sometimes it was just the little things he did. Somehow just having moments like this could allay some of her fears. She was starting to smile at him rather wider when he suddenly grabbed her and pulled her into his lap. The little squeak of surprise she gave was probably the most stereotypically feminine sound she had uttered in several weeks.

"Ron!" she complained in indignant surprise. Her sudden change of position had caught her rather off balance, and she grabbed hold of his arm to keep her in position, one leg still caught over the arm of the sofa at an odd angle. She shifted just enough to move her leg and stop the unpleasant stretch. "Maybe, but a little warning might have been nice," she said, chiding gently. She didn't actually mind all that much, surprise or not. She liked being close to him sometimes, just feeling his presence.

“There’s no fun in a warning though.” Ron said playfully, nodding in agreement with himself while he held her there-- one arm around her waist, hand on her hip with the other one resting on her knee. He loved being able to do stuff like that now. For so long they were just thoughts in his head, just impulses to repress and forget but not anymore. Now he could hold her when he wanted to hold her and he could kiss her when he wanted to kiss her (well whenever they got a moment together without any distractions which apparently were few and far in between).

But speaking of kissing Hermione.

When neither said anything for a moment and they were just staring at one and other, the urge to kiss the brunette girl was pretty strong. And he almost acted on it. It would have been real easy to just lean forward and touch his lips to her’s and the only thing that stopped him was remembering why exactly he was in the Common Room in the first place. He knew that if he started to kiss her, he wouldn’t want to stop any time soon and he really needed to get this essay at least started. It took, well basically all of his will power to break the moment, sparing a glance to the Charms book at his side.

“I should really finish this chapter.” His tone was laced with slight dejection, which was a usual response to whenever he had school work to do. It was easy to see why since it was always getting in the way of things he’d rather be doing. Returning his attention to Hermione, Ron narrowed his eyes as if concentrating hard on something. “You know, if a certain girlfriend sitting in my lap right now wanted to help me with the introduction to my essay-- I’d probably get it done faster and understand it better.”

Hermione gave a little laugh, Ron was right about there not being fun in a warning. "Well, it's fun for you. You forget I'm not used to suddenly changing gravity like you are from flying. Although I can't deny liking the result," she admitted, leaning against him a little more. She almost gave in to the temptation to kiss him on the cheek, but that was only going to make it harder to not to move on to kissing him properly.

Part of her just wanted to kiss him, curl up with him and give up on work for the evening, but if she didn't keep working she would start getting behind. Taking seven examined subjects meant she really couldn't afford to do that.

She sighed. "I've told you before, just because I'm your girlfriend now I'm not going to do your work for you any more than when we were friends. I'll read it over and suggest improvements when you're done if you like, though," she conceded. There was no way she could bring herself to help him out with his homework, but she didn't mind asking probing questions which would help him. She was willing to do the same for other friends too; Ron might be special, but he couldn't make her completely break her principles.

Ron could feel one corner of his mouth twitch upwards as he rolled his eyes, responding in a tone that suggested this was exactly the answer he expected from her. “Yeah, yeah-- I know. Had to try and all that, wouldn‘t be me if I didn‘t.” Despite the major change in their relationship, Ron wanted to keep to their traditions which included him trying to weasel out of school work and her refusing to assist him in such endeavors. He knew that the day she did an assignment for him would never come, it was just as simple as that but that wouldn’t ever stop him from trying.

“Suppose we better get back to work then. I’ll move over to where your stuff is so I can keep an eye on ya`. Make sure you’re not messing about and neglecting your studies.” He joked, giving her knee a faint squeeze before gently (way more so than when he tugged her into his lap) shifted her around so that she was able to stand up. Once she did, the tall redhead followed in fashion and got to his feet, leaning over to grab his book and parchments before cutting the distance between him and the table with Hermione’s things laid out.

“What were you getting at again?” Ron asked, running a finger a long the spine of one of Hermione’s books after setting down his own things and taking a seat. Blue eyes shifted to Hermione. “Transfiguration was it?”

"I resent the implication I'm incapable of staying on task, Ronald!" she teased straight back. Some people seemed to imagine that she lacked a sense of humour or couldn't take a joke, but it wasn't true and she particularly enjoyed the sorts of running jokes she had with her friends. When Ron moved her again she was relieved that it happened rather slower, although she had been about to question him about the sudden squeezing of her knee. She noticed the tiny little brushes of his hands, and as long as they didn't go too far she rather enjoyed them.

"Thank you," she acknowledged as he moved her to where she could stand up again. She brushed herself down slightly as she stood, pushing her hair back over her shoulders. She moved back to her table and sat in the chair she'd vacated earlier.

She nodded, unrolling her scroll ready for note-taking. "Yes, I want to plan out the latest assignment and make notes from this book before I work on my Arithmancy calculations. I'll work on the essay after that. Which Charms essay are you working on?" she asked, there were two outstanding at the moment, with different completion dates. One was rather nearer to being due than the other, it was also the one she thought was more complicated.

Sitting there, Ron watched intently as Hermione took her seat across from him and began to unroll a stroll. He could already see the concentration on her face as she got into her eminent learning frame of mind. It was a look he could probably identify from great distances at this point. “Oy, just thinking about all that work is giving me a headache. I can’t even remember what we’re doing in Transfig right now.” He commented as he sat back in his chair, hands lifting to rub at his temples for a few seconds. “Hopefully not anything too important.”

He grabbed his book off the table when she asked him which Charms essay he was working on, flipping it open and searching for the right page. “Uh, whichever is due first? I know it was like, something about something.” Ron added helpfully at the end while his brows furrowed slightly, looking his usual lost. He had only read a paragraph in by the time that Hermione had showed up and since then, well he’s basically forgotten most (all) the information.

Once he had gotten back to where he was suppose to be in the book, he held it in one hand, using the other hand to rub at the small knot in the back of his neck. “The effects and uses of the disillusionment charm? Is that one of them due or am I on the wrong chapter?”

Hermione deflated slightly with a sigh and looked up from her own book. "It's all important, Ron," she pointed out. "You know that we could be examined on any of the syllabus, obviously there are the things which regularly come up, but any of the syllabus could be a part of the exams," she said, falling into an almost lecturing tone.

She wasn't surprised when he said he was writing the one which was due first, she'd had to do more preparation than usual for that one herself. "No, that's the one due later. The one due next is the one comparing the effects of at least three mood altering charms and assessing how to safely use them." Whilst cheering charms had been part of the OWL syllabus there were a whole class of mood-altering charms, several of which were strictly in NEWT territory because of the serious side effects if they were performed incorrectly.

"It's eighteen inches too, so depending which ones you choose you might have to use more charms, obviously with some of them having less effects and problems." She gave Ron a rueful smile, it gave him a lot of work to do before the essay was due, but it was certainly still doable. Turning back to her book she quickly found the contents page and identified the chapter she needed for her own essay and turned to it.
