Ariana lay on the floor of her room, counting her heartbeats. She kept her eyes open, focusing on anything but the thought of the light of spells; she remembered what had happened, even as she wished she didn't, and every memory seemed to be of pain and darkness.
She heard a knock and stood, gracefully, dancing on tiptoes to put her eye to the peephole. An old man. She frowned, making a face. She thought knew how this would end: no outside, with real trees, made of living organic material, and grass made of fragile green threads. No. Now she would be stuck here, with grey, fabric grass, a forest of plain, white wall and a dead flat tree for a door, and no freedom at all. Why else would a strange man be there, if not to confine her again, as all older people did?
"I see you," she whispered to the man, glaring. She contemplated ignoring it, but she knew that he would only come back if she did. Instead she raised her voice, singing. "Ariana's not here right now!"
Which was true, she supposed, depending on which Ariana he was looking for.
