dragons were almost comforting

Dragons were almost comforting.

It wasn't that Hope wanted to have the air filled with the fire-breathing creatures or especially that she wanted others to be in danger or anything. She definitely didn't, but it was something familiar in a sea of what the hell. It had only been a few days since her own arrival in Cardiff when the dragons had shown up in the skies above them. She'd told herself she should stay out of it. That she'd been actively trying to not give herself up for who and what she really was. She'd been playing human, but she wasn't. Not by a long shot, and so far she'd managed to stay under the radar. But she also couldn't just let innocent people get hurt.

She'd had to step out to get some things - namely blood if she wanted to keep living. Or unliving, whatever you called it. That was another secret she'd shared with very few, but she'd managed to find out where she could find a decent supply without too much trouble. And without hurting others. No Salvatore School blood supply to dip into here. Hope was truly on her own for the first time in her life.

On her way back to her apartment, one of the dragons swooped down suddenly, breathing fire at her and some nearby pedestrians who were stupid enough to be milling around. Or maybe, like Hope, they'd had errands that couldn't wait. Whatever the case might be, Hope reacted out of instinct more than anything else. Fire couldn't kill her but the burns sure as hell would hurt and those around her weren't nearly as durable as she was.

"Aquamalia." Hope used a spell she knew very well to pull moisture in the air and summon up a stream of water, using the accompanying movement of her hands to direct it toward the fire that was coming their way. It was a big risk, doing magic in the open, but she couldn't just let these people get hurt. Or worse.

The alert came out through the magical networks, and Harry just happened to be the nearest auror to spot the incoming threat. "Out of the way! Get inside!" He was shouting to people, hurrying down the road toward the threat, wand out just in time to see the newcomer use her own form of magic- something he'd not seen before.

And for a moment, he slowed and stared in awe. Wandless magic. A spell he didn't recognize. There was a moment the dragon seemed baffled too as its flames died down. Then, it regrouped.

"Protego!" He shouted before it could strike again, casting a shield over the few people still outside, including Hope and himself. It blocked the beast long enough to push him back, keeping its claws from swooping in on them.

And it gave them just a moment. Harry glanced at her. "What else can you do?" He needed to act quickly. Just two of them against a dragon- all they had to do was scare it off.

Shit. Hope hadn't meant for anyone to find out she could do magic, least of all the young wizard to seem to more or less be in charge of everything here. There wasn't time to think about it, though, which helped, because this at least was the kind of thing she was used to - fighting monsters.

Hope followed Harry's lead, adding her own SHIELD spell to his. She hoped the two would be compatible and that hers would only lend strength to his obviously powerful spell.

Scutum. It had worked on that dragon girl, but not against Dark Josie, so she knew it had it's limits and dragon-girl wasn't really the same as a full-fledged dragon, but she hoped it would give them a minute to think.

"I could try a containment spell or a barrier spell," she said, thinking out loud. It wouldn't get the dragon to leave the area, but it could keep it from hurting anyone, at least as long as it held. There were death spells, but she knew that wasn't the goal here, not if there was another option. "I know a good sleep spell, but I've never tried it on a dragon before and, uh, I'm not sure putting it to sleep right here is a great idea." Hope looked over at Harry while she continued to do a mental inventory of everything in her grimoire.

"Shields are good," Harry called back, keeping his wand at the ready and trying to think. He could get on the thing's back- no, that was a terrible idea. They needed someone like Charlie Weasley right then and there, someone who knew how to do this. "We need to draw it away and maybe bind it if it won't leave the area altogether!"

He cast another blocking charm as the thing tried to breathe fire then nodded. "Okay, I have an idea- I'm going to summon my broom and try to get it to follow me. Have you ever flown before??"

Did they even have flying brooms where she came from?

Hope nodded. She wasn't sure exactly how to go about doing that, but it helped to know what their goal was. Killing it would have probably been easier, but she didn't want to do that if they didn't have to.

Her eyes widened at the brook flew toward his hand. Talk about stereotypical witch stuff. "Like on a broom?" she asked. "Not so much, but how hard can it be?" It wasn't like she could die, anyway.

That was a tricky question for someone like Harry who had a natural talent for flying. He wondered whether or not he should offer her one, but thought better of it as he quickly did as he said he would. It was only after another swipe that the broom finally showed up and Harry grabbed it.

"Okay, I'm going to do my best to distract it. You watch over the civilians and hopefully, we can lure it out of here."

Hopefully being the key word. He didn't I've her time to argue before he jumped onto his ride and lifted up toward the dragon, weaving just past it's teeth before casting a charm toward it's nose in the hopes it would not chomp down on his 'partner' below.
