"You're late."
Even though Severus spoke in a neutral tone, merely making an observation, Draco still flinched, and Severus barely refrained from grinding his teeth together in frustration. He had told Draco to return at ten o'clock, and it was now past noon. He didn't want to own up to the fact that he had been worried about the annoying little prat. Or that he resented the fact that the wasted time could have been far better spent coaxing Remus back into bed. Especially since the last night hadn't been nearly enough to slake Severus' hunger for his lover, and there were no guarantees about when, or if, they could ever be together again.
"Sorry," Draco mumbled, flushing and refusing to meet Severus' eyes. "I, um, overslept."
"Really," Severus responded drily, biting back an acid comment that Draco looked as though he had barely slept at all. Then his attitude softened a tiny, almost imperceptible amount as he reminded himself that the place he had sent Draco was hardly the comfortable place this was, being little more than a functional shack. But Draco had been safe enough there, although it seemed as though he didn't believe it. "Trust me, no one would have found you there. I promise you that, Draco. I would not put your life at risk."
Draco looked at Severus sharply, something like fear in his eyes, and Severus sighed, holding Draco's gaze. He wasn't used to having to comfort anyone, and it didn't come naturally to him, so Draco was going to have to make his own peace with the situation. Which, apparently, he did, for after a few long moments, Draco nodded, his expression becoming speculative.
