Sunday: 10/21/07
Who: Starbuck and Lu
When: Sunday afternoon
Where: starting in Starbuck's apartment, maybe going outside
What: old friends catching up!
2:30 rolled around, and Starbuck picked up the video baby monitor to see if Kamea was at least stirring, because she was being so quiet. Sure enough, she was sitting up in her bed, playing with her favorite stuffed animal. Starbuck had read a lot of parenting books since Kamea came into his life, and they all offered different advice. Some said it was bad to let kids have toys in their cribs, others said a small blanket or soft toy provided a child with a sense of security while sleeping. After asking his mom, and discovering that he'd had a blankie as a baby, it was ok to let Kamea cling to something while she slept. But other than that, there were no toys in the crib, not even blankets. Kai had bought a bunch of pajamas called 'sleep sacks' that were designed to keep a kid warm without getting all tangled up. Kamea liked them, so Starbuck was cool with it. Right now, she was attempting to shuffle around her crib with the sleep sack wrapped around her legs. It was funny to watch, but Starbuck didn't let her mosey around for long. He prepared her after nap bottle and went into the room to retrieve her. "Hey there, beautiful. Did you have a good nap?" Kamea let her toy drop to the floor and reached her arms out over the railing for him to pick her up. Starbuck scooped her into his arms and gave her a kiss on the forehead before carrying her into the living room to drink her bottle.
She was being really good today, not at all fussy, which wasn't exactly a rarity, but she'd gotten some new teeth a few weeks back and had been very upset as a result. At least she hadn't gotten sick yet, and Starbuck wasn't even sure if she could. She was part human, so he supposed there was a chance, but Starbuck was hopeful it was a very minimal risk.
While Kamea sucked at her bottle, she stared up at her daddy. It made Starbuck's heart tug. He wondered what she was thinking. She could only say a few things at this age, but he was pretty good at figuring out what she wanted just by all her little quirks. It was when she stared at him like this though, that he wondered if she was thinking 'where's mommy?'. Starbuck reached behind the couch to the table there and grabbed the framed photo of Lani that was sent to him by Lani's friends in Japan. "Here she is," he responded to the question that wasn't even asked. Kamea took one hand off her bottle and patted the photo of her mother, smiling as she finished off her meal. Starbuck set the bottle down and let Kamea hold the picture frame. He didn't believe in God, so he couldn't offer up the sorts of condolences that most people did.. like 'she's in heaven watching over you'. He usually didn't say anything at all. It was just too hard to explain right now. "She loved you sooo much," he said finally, kissing the top of her head. He knew that much had to be true, because it would be impossible to not love Kamea.
The somewhat somber moment was thankfully interrupted by the sound of a knock on the door. "Ooh, visitors. Should we go see who it is?" he asked, standing up and carrying her with him to the door. As he opened it, his smile grew wide. Immediately, Starbuck leaned forward with Kamea still in his arms and gave Lu a kiss on the cheek. "LuLu..." he started as he pulled back and held Kamea up a little higher, "This is Kamea. Come in," he offered, moving out of the way.
