Wednesday 25th March 09
Who: Charlie and Ava
What: Sharing of information
Where: Starting wherever his self defense lessons are held?
When: Wednesday afternoon/early evening.
Everything was a lot more put together and rational today than it was when Ava barged in on Charlie and started this whole fiasco about his need to be a knight in shining armor. Today she was dressed, ready for her class later infact, and a lot calmer and in control, instead of in a robe and shouting. Walking down to where he held his new class, Ava waited for the last of his students to leave and walked over to him. “Good class?” She asked politely, with a small smile.
---
Charlie had noticed Ava’s entrance, but he tried not to let it distract him the last few minutes of his class. Still, those heels and the way they made her legs look, coupled with the smell of her perfume, well, it was hard to focus. His eyes kept drifting over to her.
When all of his students were gone, Ava approached him. He started unwrapping his left hand. “It was until you showed up and distracted me,” he said with a grin. “Those are some great heels.”
---
Once upon a time Ava would have taken great pleasure in distracting him, well, she still did take some pleasure in it, but it was also slightly awkward now. Still, she couldn’t help but laugh softly as he told her she had managed it, looking down at the heels and back up. “These? Of all the shoes, in all the closets you like the basic black pump best. Simple taste.” She joked. “I didn’t just come here to distract you though. I... got you the number you wanted. We might need to talk about it though...”
---
“They’re classy.. and sexy.” He allowed himself to check out her legs. “And your legs look fantastic in them.” He scanned up her body. “If your goal is to make all your students hungry, then you’ve succeeded.”
He stopped craving her, well, briefly, when she mentioned the phone number. Charlie’s face turned serious and he finished unwrapping his left hand. “Sounds like there are some conditions involved in surrendering it.”
---
Classy and sexy. Two of her favourite words! She wasn’t surprised he liked her legs either, he always had, especially the way they looked when she wore heels. He had other legs to drool over now though, and she had to remind herself of that. Other legs attached to beautiful blondes. Damnit!
“Not conditions, just... warnings.” Ava sighed, pulling out the piece of paper and playing with it idly. “I had to ask Reese for it, and he had some concerns. Don’t worry, I didn’t tell him why you needed her, but still... I called her, and she does want to help, or at least talk to you but.... I don’t know how good a place she is in right now, so... be careful. Not least because if she dies, I die apparently.” She laughed again, although it was a little lacking in humor, and held out the paper with the number on it.
----
Yes. Charlie did have other legs to drool over. McKenna was stunning and blond. He had zero complaints. It wasn’t serious yet, but he felt like the potential was there. She was an amazing woman.
“Warnings. Right.” Charlie could guess what they were. Some sort of death threat was probably involved. Yep, there it was. If Peyton died, then Reese would kill Ava. “She’s not going to die. I’d never allow it.” He took the piece of paper, glanced at the number, and then stuffed it into the pocket of his shorts. “Thanks.. for helping me.”
---
The warnings weren’t exactly hard to guess. Ava had been waiting for them as soon as she discovered Reese wasn’t going to just hang up on her without listening. “I’m glad, not just because I quite like being able to scheme and manipulate people from this side of the veil for lack of a better word, but she’s my friend. I’m sort of hoping this helps her somehow.” She shrugged. “It’s not a problem. I couldn’t just let you walk off with no help and get yourself killed. People would talk.”
---
Charlie raised an eyebrow. “How would it help her?” He didn’t see how killing some woman’s sire would benefit Peyton. He needed her help. That was the only reason Charlie had sought her out.
“Talk about how you got rid of me once and for all? Yeah, I could see that.” He chuckled as he unwrapped his right hand and then walked over to hang up both wraps in the supply closet. Charlie set to work moving the bags out of the way as well.
---
“Give her something to do... or something.” Ava waved her hand dismissively. She wasn’t really sure how she thought it would help, she just lived in hope. Even the thought sounded wrong. Ava? In hope? Blergh!
Slipping off her heels and setting them to the side, she helped move things and clean up, laughing at his words. “This school talks about anything and everything. It’s worse than the tabloids and gossip magazines sometimes. Me getting you killed? It would pass when someone else has a baby or gets someone killed.” It wouldn’t pass in her mind. She’d feel awful, as much as it wasn’t something she’d voice. “Best you stay around and create more scandals. I know you have it in you.”
---
Charlie let the issue go. Every time he thought he had Ava figured out, and understood how her mind worked, she surprised him again. He needed to give up that battle. He needed to give up on a lot of things.
Pausing, he looked at her carefully. “So you only want me to live.. to preserve your reputation? Good to know.” He knew that wasn’t the case, but he also doubted that Ava’s feelings for him would last. She’d forget about him one day, well, maybe not completely, but he’d just be a distant memory.
---
Understanding Ava was a bit of a lost cause. Everyone knew a slightly different version of her. Even she wasn’t sure she knew herself completely or had herself figured out, so how was anyone else meant to. It was a mistake for anyone to think they could.
“Yes Charlie. I only want you alive to preserve my oh so perfect reputation.” She repeated, rolling her eyes, clearly sarcastic, but good natured. “And so my tattoo wasn’t for nothing of course. Nothing to do with the fact we were married, and I still love you, and you are my family even if we are divorced.”
---
Charlie had tried, and that was the best he could do. He thought he knew Ava better than anyone, just as he thought she knew him better than anyone. But if that were the case, she never would have fucked Godric... not unless she’d intended to hurt Charlie.
He avoided her eyes as she rattled off the truth. Charlie said nothing in reply. This was still hard for him. It was getting easier, clearly, or he wouldn’t be capable of having such conversations with her, but his heart still ached over Ava.
---
She really should have known it was just a matter of time until things went downhill. Their last meeting and the way it went from bad to good must have given her false expectations. This seemed more like reality, although at least it wasn’t as bad as some of their recent meetings had been. Yet. It would probably be best to get out now before that changed. “Well, you have your number and warnings. I’ll leave you to cleaning up from your lesson and waste some time before setting up for mine.” Ava breezed, going back to her shoes and putting them on.
---
“Ava..” Charlie started with a sigh. He looked defeated. He was. “This is hard. I think it probably always will be. I miss you so much.. but I can’t... we can’t. This is the best I can manage right now.” He wasn’t yelling at her, he wasn’t being a dick to her or anyone in her life. He was trying so hard to simply move on. “You don’t make it easy. You’re..” he sighed, “I thought you were the one. I could see my future, and you were it. I would have come back for you. If I thought for one second that I mattered as much to you.. as you did to me.. I would have left it all behind and come back for you.” He shrugged. “That’s the truth about relationships that people don’t discuss. One person always cares a little bit more. I’d kinda like to find someone who puts me first.” He’d been willing to leave his family back in California. Charlie wouldn’t have done that for anyone else.
---
This wasn’t what she wanted. She didn’t make her excuses to leave to get into another discussion about what was wrong with her, or why it was her fault they couldn’t be together anymore. She said it to escape all of the awkwardness and angst that came with those. Apparently she was failing. “Good luck in that. I wasn’t looking for another discussion on what is wrong. I was trying to preserve the pleasant atmosphere of the other day. We don’t need to talk about all of this, or any of it infact. It would just be repeating the same excuses we’ve thrown or screamed at each for a few months now.”
---
“I wasn’t trying to put the blame on you. I fucked up plenty, more times than I care to admit. Maybe if I hadn’t... failed so many times.. you would have waited.” He shrugged. He felt like he hadn’t been enough for her. “Hopefully, we’ve both learned our lesson. Maybe we won’t make the same mistakes again.. with other people.” There was just no fixing what had gone wrong between them. But Charlie would never forget it, and he’d try to avoid those destructive words and actions if he ever got lucky enough to find someone else to love. Maybe he could be a better man the next time. If there was a next time.
---
“Hopefully we learnt our lessons.” She agreed pleasantly with a nod. “I know I have.” Whether she was referring to learning how not to screw relationships up, or learning not to have serious relationships, well that was up for debate. “Let’s leave this on a pleasant note, yes? Don’t get anyone, including yourself, killed, apart from the obvious of course, and I hope things between you and McKenna continue to go well.”
---
Charlie bowed his head slightly in appreciation. “Thank you. I wish you nothing but the best as well.” And he did. His love for Ava was unending, and as a result, her happiness mattered a great deal. He couldn’t make her happy anymore, so he hoped someone else might one of these days. And he hoped he’d be able to keep his composure the way Ava was right now. “I’ll make sure Peyton returns safe and sound. You have my word. I can’t let Reese hurt you.”
---
Well wasn’t this just lovely? So polite and pleasant. Ava needed to get away. She couldn’t do this anymore. She had done her part for now. She needed something else to help her forget possibly, and then to go to her lesson, or go out..... she should probably go to the lesson. It would be unfair on Ana and Godric not to. “I appreciate that. Like I said, I prefer other types of scandal.” She laughed softly. “I’ll talk to you later I’m sure.”
---
“Enjoy your class. Tell Ana I said hello.” He didn’t talk much with her these days, because he wasn’t sure she’d approve of him dating. His relationship with Ana was strange. He loved her like an annoying sister.. who was totally hot.
---
“I will” She waved over her shoulder as she walked out. Here was to everything getting better, or enough drugs to make it feel like it was.
