Who: Riley, Starbuck, Mara
What: Fixing a little girl's sick tummy.
Where: Riley's house.
When: Early Friday evening.
Starbuck hopped in his car after confirming his visit with Riley. There was no reason for the guy's daughter to suffer with a cold. It was an easy fix. The drive was short, as he followed the directions, and the nymph soon arrived at a very nice home. He made his way to the door and knocked.
Riley had never had any type of healing done on him or his daughter until Starbuck healed his cut the other day. He hoped that he could fix up his girl so she wouldn't be suffering. He opened the door when he heard the knock and grinned at the other man. "Hey come on in."
Stabuck smiled in return. "Good to see ya," he offered cheerfully as he made his way inside. "Nice house. Kim and I could use this much space. Things are getting crowded at the apartment." It was even more so with his mom still around helping Kim and Reed.
"You too." Riley shut the door and looked at him as he talked. "There are a lot of houses around here, it's nice and quiet. Right you have a new baby don't you?"
"Yeah, Reed. He's just a few weeks old. Kamea aged fast because of the virus. She's about seven as a result. It's crazy." He followed Riley. "So what are Mara's symptoms? Mostly the nose and throat, or is it in her chest?
Riley nodded and was somewhat glad that his daughter hadn't been here for that virus. He started up the stairs for Mara's room. "she was vomiting last night and she has a fever right now but no longer throwing up."
"So might be the flu then. Should be an easy fix." Starbuck tagged along until they were in Mara's room. He went over to her side and smiled as he got down closer to her level. "Hey, Mara. I'm Starbuck. I heard you're feeling yucky."
Mara was snuggled into her bed, clutching her hyena from the lion king and was a bit surprised when the other man came into her room. But she sat up with a grin for him. She nodded at his question and then hid in Riley's side when he came over to sit next to her.
"I don't know if your daddy told you, but I have a really cool super power. I can make sick people better again just by touching them. Would you like it if I made you feel better?"
She peeked around Riley's arm and then tugged on it so he would lean down. She whispered in his ear and he grinned as she talked. "She would really like it if you made her better and apparently she wants me to tell you she thinks you're really cute for an adult." He said with a grin.
Starbuck chuckled and gave a little nod in Mara's direction. "Well thank you very much. I think your red hair is beautiful." Starbuck pulled off his coat and set it on the bed. "Let me tell you how my power works. My hands start to glow blue, and then that glow spreads into you. It will feel kinda cold and might tickle a little."
Mara grinned at him again when he said her hair was beautiful and then immediately touched his hands when he said they would glow blue. "Why?" She asked as she turned them over in hers.
"I'm not sure why. It's magic. Magic does weird stuff." He shrugged. "My little girl can heal people too." He let Mara inspect his hand, letting her get comfortable with him. "Maybe you could come over and play sometime. Kamea would like that."
Mara took the explanation as magic with a nod and then let go of his hand so he could get rid of her flu. Her eyes went wide at the idea of going to play and then she glanced at Riley who nodded. "I'm sure that would be a lot of fun." He said as he stroked her hair.
"Is it okay if I put my hands on your tummy?" he asked, wanting to make sure she felt safe.
Mara nodded and then scrunched her nose at him. "Promise it won't hurt?"
"I promise," he said sincerely. "Your daddy had a boo boo the other day. I fixed it. He can back me up on this.. it won't hurt."
Riley nodded and smiled at her. "He fixed the cut I had on my hand, it didn't hurt at all bunny...it's okay." He kissed the top of Mara's head and she looked at Starbuck for a minute and then nodded. "Okay."
"Awesome. Why don't you lie down flat on your back and let me have a look at your tummy." He waited until she did and the place his hands on her bare belly. "Like I said, blue glowing, kinda cold, and a tickle." He waited a second and the closed his eyes, focusing on her energy. It allowed him to seek out the illness and go after it with his own healing energy. Thata when his hands started to glow, the energy flowing from him and into Mara.
Mara layed down and pulled her tshirt up a bit so Starbuck could touch her stomach. She bit her lip and then started to giggle when his energy flowed into her. It did tickle and the fact that it glowed blue was kinda cool.
Starbuck kept his focus until he no longer felt the virus in her system. He pulled away his hands then as they stopped glowing. Mara's stomach continued to glow from his handprints. "The marks will stay for the next day or so."
She felt remarkably better and then poked at the handprints. "Cool!" She cried out and then ran to show Lauren before stopping suddenly and smiling at Starbuck. "Thank you for making it better." She said as she threw her arms around his neck and noisily kissed his cheek before running off to show Lauren and hopefully maybe her mom.
Starbuck chuckled at her reaction and the kiss, in which he offered a brief hug in return. He was still smiling when she was gone. "She's great."
Riley smiled at she ran off and then looked at Starbuck. "yeah she really is, I'm very lucky to have her...I've only had her since she was two and I wish I had been with her since her birth."
Starbuck nodded. "I know the feeling. I didn't know about Kamea until a social worker showed up at my place. I was totally unprepared to be a dad."
Riley nodded slightly. "A social worker contacted me when they went to take Mara away from Charlie, they wanted to know if I wanted her before they put her in the system." He sighed and ran a hand over his face. "I didn't even know charlie had had her, she told me she aborted her."
Starbuck's expression was empathetic. "Yeah, Lani never told me she was pregnant, let alone when she had Kamea. I feel cheated." And he'd always be angry with Lani for that.
Riley bit his lip and nodded. "yeah I will always feel cheated too, so much I missed out on." He said with a sigh, but he couldn't be mad at charlie not really.
"I just try to focus on the present and future. I have her now, and she has a wonderful mother in Kim." Lani's ghost didn't like it, but she didn't have a say."
Riley straightened up Mara's bed and h e smiled. "Yeah I'm lucky to have her now. I wish I had a partner to help take care of her so we had a family unit but maybe in time."
"Don't rush it. Don't even go looking for it. The right person will come along when it's time. Kim was just a friend for well over a year. And we took it slow. Almost painfully so.." he said with a chuckle.
"Right now, trust me I'm looking for nothing. My bad luck gets me no where so I'm just trying to have friends." He said as he started to collect the couple of cups on the nightstand.
Starbuck grabbed his coat and offered to help Riley. "I just put all dating on hold after I got Kamea."
"thanks, I just became way more selective so I had very few actual dates." He picked up a couple more things and then headed downstairs for the kitchen.
"I just didn't want Kamea getting hurt. I wanted to make sure whoever I was with.. I'd be with for a long time. Kamea had enough heartbreak with Lani." Starbuck followed Riley.
Riley walked into the kitchen and set the dishes down and smiled at Starbuck. "Yeah I put someone back into our lives and Mara got hurt because she misses them terribly...of course now she thinks Fox is my boyfriend, despite the fact I try to tell her he's not."
"Yeah, best you get that idea out of her head. He'a not known for sticking around. And last I heard he was bailing as soon as he spent a year here." Plus, Fox was straight.
"yeah he told me that, I've been trying she's just determined." He cleared his throat and started loading the dishes in the dishwasher
Starbuck helped as best he could. "Kids are like that. They latch on to people."
"they do, she just doesn't want me to be lonely I know that it's part of it. And she thinks Fox is cute." He chuckled.
Starbuck rolled his eyes. "I don't get what everyone sees in him. But, maybe that's just me." He shrugged.
Riley looked at him and shut the dishwasher. "He's a really good guy, most people only see what he let's them see or what the expect to see. He's more than that." He said with a shrug. "Did you want a drink or anything?"
"No, I'm good. Thanks." Starbuck didn't comment any further on Fox. He'd given the guy plenty of chances, and patched him up plenty of times. What had Fox done in return?
Riley nodded as he poured himself a glass of water. Not everyone liked Fox, he had learned that quickly but he was a good friend to Riley so he didn't give anyone else's opinion a lot of merit.
"Let me know if Mara isn't one-hundred percent tomorrow. Viruses can be tricky to cure. I'll come back if needed."
"I will let you know, thanks so much for coming by Starbuck."
"Sure thing. Call me anytime.. and let me know if Mara feels like coming over to play with Kamea. We'd be happy to have her whenever."
"that would be great, I'm sure all she is going to talk about now is Kamea." He grinned at Starbuck and then walked him to the door. "Again thanks so much."
"You're welcome. Take care, Riley." Starbuck shook the guy's hand and then took off.
