Who: Ingrid and Bastian
When: Late Morning
Where: The school kitchen
What: Ingrid needs supplies
Ingrid had been thinking for a while now what it was she could do for Reese as a sort of surprise and a thank you for putting up with her and all of her shit. Granted, he came with his own baggage too, and his was in the very tangible form of an infant, but still, he'd been beyond good to her and she felt like she needed to come up with some selfless way to show it. And then it finally hit her.
She never gave food or cooking much thought because she didn't actually eat. He was the one who took care of all the meals for that reason alone. But wouldn't it be nice if she made him dinner? If he got to come home from class one evening to a nice, home-cooked meal that he didn't have to make himself? Sure, she could order him some take out, but that wasn't the same. She needed to feed her man.
Of course there was one problem with this brilliant plan, or several, actually. The apartment in which they lived had the basics, the essentials, which was all fine and good for just making something quick but for something with a bit more finesse, it was seriously lacking. And it was also lacking in ingredients which was an issue because it was daytime so she couldn't exactly go out and pick things up. So she decided to do what anyone in her shoes would do, scavange what she needed from a nearby source. Surely the kitchen here would be willing to help her out in her time of need.
In an over-sized, off the shoulder dress that was incredibly short and a pair of leggings to compensate for that, she headed through the tunnels to the main building where the cafeteria was. After asking a few of the people she first encountered, she was told she would have to talk to Bastian, the man in charge of the kitchen, and she was directed to the back where he was doing some inventory. She knocked on the storeroom door, peering around the door jamb to see if she could spot him.
~~~
Bastian was in the pantry, running over the list of what they should have and comparing it with what was on the shelves. Of course, even that wasn't entirely accurate. He had to continually search for misplaced items, or determine that something was pilfered. Once again, he grumbled under his breath. He didn't mind making meals for students and staff to take home, or even sharing things he didn't have immediate plans for, but he wanted to be asked dammit! It was only polite. This sticky-fingered mess needed to stop.
Hearing the knock, he called out, "Just a minute." Bastian quickly finished the count of bags of flour and marked his place, setting the clipboard on a shelf. Turning, he saw a familiar face. One he'd seen under the tunnels. "Pleasure to see you. How can I help?"
~~~
That was unexpected. It was clear when Bastian turned around and Ingrid saw his face that she was shocked to find him there. Then again, now that she thought about it, finding him here made perfect sense. She hadn't seen him around since that night. She figured either he had gotten fired, quit, or possibly had died from the virus. But he was in charge of the kitchen, the one place on campus she never bothered to come, until now.
"Uhm," she found herself at a loss of words for a minute. "Well, I uhm.. wanted to cook something, for my boyfriend, and I don't... have everything I need so the guy.." She pointed toward the front. "Out there, he told me I should come and talk to... Bastian." And now she knew his name. It was far less impressive than she would have imagined it to be.
~~~
Bastian noticed the surprise, but he didn't share it. Vampires didn't frequent his kitchen and though he was trying to work with Charlie to change that, it was slow going. She didn't have a reason to stop by, so it made sense they didn't see each other. He nodded at her explanation and motioned her forward. "Sure. And thanks for asking. Most people just usually grab what they want, which makes it a pain to keep track. What do you need?"
~~~
Ingrid took a few steps into the place, a bit of a smirk forming upon her lips as he thanked her. "Well, I probably would have done that too but.. since there's people here right now, that kind of makes it impossible." He was strangely good at this. She had told him that night if they ever saw one another again that they didn't know each other and had never met and she would buy it. It seemed pretty believable. "Well, I haven't actually cooked in like... a good forty years so... Any recommendations for something delicious but easy? I kind of know where I wanna go for dessert but I have no idea about the main course, really."
~~~
Bastian nodded, understanding. "At least you're honest." He remembered her request to act like nothing had happened. It wasn't new to him to act like they were strangers when they essentially were. He'd been intimate with her body, but not her person. "Well, spaghetti is always easy and it's easy to dress up and look amazing."
~~~
Ingrid made a face at the suggestion and shook her head. "That's something he makes for himself all the time. I want to make something special. Something very... Sunday dinner." She smiled somewhat shyly. "It's just been a while since I've had one of those."
~~~
Nodding in understanding, Bastian looked up at the ceiling for a moment, flipping through his mental recipe book. "What about shephard's pie? It's pretty simple once everything's cooked. Layer it together and bake it. I think I've got most of it around here, so you can either take some of my premade items or make it all from scratch."
~~~
"I've had that before." And it was pretty good. And it was usually soft enough that it was something Wyatt could eat too which would be a nice change for him. He was on solid foods, baby food mostly. If she mashed a bit of it, he'd probably like it. "I want to make it from scratch. You can tell me how?" She glanced around the room as another idea came to her. "What about peaches? Do you have any of those?"
~~~
"Yes, I have everything. Do you know what sort of meat you want to use in it?" People made so many different variations with ground pork, turkey, beef or lamb. It all depended on what was wanted. Leading the way out of the pantry, he gestured for her to follow him, grabbing a box on the way. She would need something to carry it all in. He walked over to the fridge, flipping on the inside light and holding the door for her to step inside with him. "How many do you want to feed?"
~~~
"Whatever's mild." She had to be mindful of Wyatt's tummy. And she wasn't sure how adventurous Reese' tastes ran. They had never really discussed food before. She had never even given it much thought. "Just Reese and the baby." She paused and then added, "Wyatt, his brother. He's.... Well I have no idea how old he is but he eats baby food so he should be able to eat some if I mash it good, right?"
~~~
Okay, basic flavors. Going through the fridge, Bastian pulled out vegetables, onions, carrots, and the like. He grabbed a one-pound leftover portion of ground beef, and half a dozen peaches to set in the box. "Alright. Let's head back to the pantry and get what else you'll need. I can write down the recipe for you and you'll be good to go." He smiled at her, happy that she was seizing the initiative to please her boyfriend.
~~~
Ingrid watched him for a moment. He was different in this light than he had been in the other. It was... strange. It really did feel like they were just strangers. So as she followed him back to the pantry to gather up the rest of what she would need to make an amazing dinner (and dessert which was what the peaches were for), she decided to introduce herself. "I'm Ingrid, by the way."
~~~
Smirking, Bastian turned away from the shelves, holding out his hand for the shake. "I wondered when you'd get around to it. I'm Bastian, but then," he said with a nod towards the front. "You already knew that."
~~~
Ingrid smirked a little. "I did." She paused and then she added, "I was trying to decide if I wanted you to know my name or not." She gave a small shrug of her shoulders and then added, "Decided there was no reason for you not to." Clearly what had happened between the two of them had been a one time thing and it wasn't going to happen again. That didn't stop her from remembering how good he had been though. But even that couldn't compare with what she felt for Reese Billings.
~~~
Bastian chuckled. "Not like I'm going to hold it against you or something, but thank you." He could tell that her mind wandered for a moment, so he turned back to the shelves, continuing to stock her little box with a few fresh herbs that had just shipped in, seasonings and other items. "Alright, I think that leaves you good to go," he said, indicating the box.
~~~
"I know." Ingrid assured him. But then she smirked a bit as she added, "But then I lose the mystery so... I had to weigh the pros and cons. You understand." Ingrid looked at the box once he was done and it definitely had everything she would need for dinner tonight and then some. "Thank you," she said as she glanced back up at him. "I'll restock this all for you if you want. I just.. couldn't get to the store right now for.. obvious reasons."
~~~
Bastian shrugged. "It's for students and staff. If I know you're making it for students, then I don't mind. Don't worry about it." Reaching down, he picked up the box, nodding towards the door. "Let's get to a table and I'll write it up for you."
~~~
"Good," Ingrid smirked and then added, "Because I don't have any money." She'd had jobs before, in the past, but it had been a while since she had worked because she didn't really need to so much when she was here. Lyle took care of things before Reese had come back and now that Reese was back he took care of things, not that there was much to take care of. The school pretty much provided everything. "Thanks," she said, and followed him out of the back and to a nearby table so he could write up the recipe for her. It was a good thing too. If the spices were off, she wouldn't know it since her taste buds didn't exactly work right anymore and she didn't want to poison Reese when she was meant to be treating him.
