Clare wasn’t kidding when she said she would be hard on Hugo. She wasn’t unnecessarily cruel or anything, but he had said he wanted to get better so that he could make the team this year and Clare was sincerely trying to help him reach that goal in her own Clare sort of way. In addition, her recent argument with Ace wasn’t helping her to be particularly gentle to her companion. So, when they touched down on solid ground again around three o’clock, Clare was sweaty and disheveled, particularly her newly-brown hair, which had escaped its rubber band in clumps and been whipped around by the wind until it stuck out and fluffed up in odd places.
“Doing better,” she commented. That was Clare-ese for, You’re doing well! I’m proud of you! She retrieved her messenger bag from nearby, setting her broom down carefully – she might be callous, but she was careful with her baby – and retrieving a wide toothed comb from inside the frayed bag. “Good reflexes, bad instincts. Gotta get better at figuring out where your opponent’s going,” she commented as she picked the knots out of her hair. Finally, she retied her hair and replaced the comb in her bag, which she then shouldered, turning expectantly to Hugo. She was tired and starving – plan Lose Weight by Skipping Meals had left her stomach growling like a beast – but she wasn’t about to admit that.
