Who: Lucas Valentine & NPC Richard
What: Confrontation
When: Friday Morning
Where: The El, somewhere between Lexi & Sapph’s place and Luc’s office?
After what Richard had done to her, Lucas was reluctant to leave Roxanne, even for a moment. He definitely wasn’t leaving her alone. She’d said she was going to stay with her friends, so he went with her there before he went to work, made sure she got there safely.
There had to be something he could do. What he really wanted to do was track down Richard and beat him within an inch of his life, let him see how it felt, see how he liked being abused. Lucas wasn’t a fighter. He hadn’t so much as thrown a punch at someone since undergrad, but in this case he was sure he could do it. There was a barely contained rage in him that anyone would treat someone else like that, and the fact that anyone had hurt Roxanne, his Roxanne, had that rage threatening to bubble over.
That wasn’t how this world worked though. There were laws for a reason. This was a civil society. She could press charges. Get a restraining order. Make sure the law dealt with Richard and make sure his reputation was ruined. It wasn’t as satisfying, but it was fair and it was right.
Unfortunately, Richard had no concerns about doing what was fair or right. Lucas had just jogged down the stairs to catch a train to his office when a tall, dark-haired man appeared out of nowhere in the empty transit tunnel.
”You.” He blocked Luc’s path.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?”
The man didn’t think he was doing anything. He was doing it.
”You think you can fuck my woman and there won’t be consequences?”
Without any further warning he found himself slammed against the wall. His head spun from the impact with the greasy bricks and the man’s arm pressed into the back of his neck mercilessly.
It had to be Richard. Among the surprise that this was happening at all, Lucas was surprised at that. As horrible as the Duke had been, he’d also been, well, somehow weak. A tweaky looking little asshole who hired other people to do his dirty work. This man was nothing like that. He had a square jaw and a serious face. Underneath the long black coat, nice clothes, and immaculate leather gloves he had the build of a man who knew how to handle himself. He didn’t look silly or pathetic. He looked dangerous, pure and simple.
”She’s mine,” Richard hissed menacingly. ”This time I won. I won and a little faggot like you isn’t going to change that.”
“You’re insane.” Lucas struggled to push away. Fine, then he would get his fight. His fist clenched anticipating his chance to face this man he hated so much. “She isn’t yours. She has a choice.”
”No. She doesn’t!” The smile on the other man’s face was truly grotesque. ”If I can’t have her, no one can.”
His plans to show Richard just what he thought of him changed instantly with one ominous click. The psychopath had drawn a gun and pressed it to his head. Lucas froze and his eyes widened. He was no coward, but he wasn’t suicidal either.
”If Roxanne doesn’t come back to me, I’ll kill you both.” This couldn’t be real. No real person should be able to say anything like that so calmly and so certainly. Lucas couldn’t believe what was happening. ”First her, then you. So you can watch her die again.”
The images that brought to mind were so horrifying they turned his stomach. He shuddered.
“You won’t get away with this.”
His assailant brought the handle of the pistol down on his skull and his vision swam again. His knees gave way. Blows landed on his stomach, his chest, his face, even as he struggled to regain his balance. He had to fight back. Blood burst over his knuckles as a well-aimed swing connected with Richard’s face. It wasn’t much use though. He was outmatched, and unarmed.
From the stairwell her heard voices. Shouting. Two women and a man. Running. Then more. As suddenly as he’d appeared, Richard was gone, running the other way. Lucas collapsed against the wall. A train had arrived, providing a crowd of good Samaritans and curious onlookers. And Richard’s escape.
This was bad.
Lucas had no idea what he was going to do now. This wasn’t just about jealousy or revenge or what was right and what was supposed to happen. This was about an insane man who wanted him dead along with the woman he loved. Nothing in his life had ever prepared him for this.
