After Briar had successfully been rescued from his brother last week, on large part thanks to Nick and Miri, Tristan hadn't immediately gone back to Camelot. Part of the reason he'd gone back to the castle at Charlotte's request before he and Gareth had set out to find Briar in the first place, he was fully aware of what he was about to do and if things went badly for him he wanted to see Charlotte one last night. He didn't tell her any of this though, for all she knew he was coming straight back once they got Briar out of the Homelands. Not the case.
He'd separated himself from the group not long after, with a message to Gareth for Charlotte that he'd be back as soon as he could. Then he'd set out on a mission that he'd been planning for weeks, and had finally reached the point of fruition. The time was now, it was now or never. Kane really believed that Tristan was useless, helpless, when in fact he was anything but. He was deceptively observant and calculating, and while he still considered himself to be equal parts Tristan and Oberon, he couldn't deny that there was a darker undercurrent to him that was all king and had nothing to do with his human half. That's the side he was giving into today, in order to protect his family.
Charlotte was his family, not Kane. Kane hadn't actually been family in years. While it looked like he'd been protecting his brother for the better part of a few months, it was quite the opposite, he'd simply been waiting. He'd felt moderately guilty about it but he wasn't willing to pit Charlotte against him and being an Ageless Briar was just as indestructible as she was. He knew Briar well enough to know that she could handle what Kane had been throwing at her and once his brother was gone for good, she'd find a way to get back to herself. The Ageless had nothing but time after all, and he'd been counting on his brother not being able to kill her. It was a risky thing to gamble but lucky for Tristan, he'd been right. Even his brother was no match for Briar Hayes' unique brand of charm, she was every man's weakness. His brother was hooked. And after they'd managed to take her right out of his hands, Tristan realized things were finally going according to plan.
He finally tracked Amelia Graves down a week following the incident, the woman he knew to be something of Kane's closest ally, as it were. Of course, if he could get some information out of her too that would be all too convenient but he didn't really need it. He just wanted to send a message, and even the score a little bit. The fight had been more brutal then Tristan had expected, Amelia's reincarnate was a force to be reckoned with but so was Tristan's and Tristan had brute strength on his side. He'd finally over powered her and drove a knife straight through her heart, and then it was over. Breathing heavily and moping the sweat on his forehead, he stood up from his crouch over her crumpled body on the floor collecting blood. He'd do anything to protect what was his. Anything. In the face of that another person's life meant next to nothing to him, and before he left he made sure not to leave anything of his behind. In some ways he and Kane weren't so different. Just separate shades of gray.
